Who wants to bet the Elizabeth banks has never seen the color purple?
How can you be an actress with a 20 year career and never watch The Color Purple? I want someone to ask her this question. I just won't believe this. I am sure the movie didn't have the impact on her as it did on all the black people I know, but I think more likely is she never thought this was a Spielberg film. Because why would he make a movie about black women, amiright?

We are just a few months apart in age and I call bullshit that she's never seen it. I remember the Color Purple as a HUGE deal when it came out and I grew up and I didn't study acting and theater arts.
I'm calling bullshit on never seeing The Color Purple. She's about the same age as me - it practically played on an infinite loop on basic cable when I was a kid. I've probably seen it at least 20-25 times all the way through.

there are people here that have never seen roots or the wiz or other culturally significant black films. hell even culturally not that significant.
The list of movies I've never seen is about as long as the list of movies that have ever been made. I'm an equal opportunity not watcher.
BUT on the list of movies to watch to catch up to be a normal human being, the color purple is probably in the top 3. I've at least read parts of it. And know it was a pulitzer winning book before being a movie.

WTH on the racist, messed up karaoke woman - she was all kinds of wrong and I can't believe others at the party didn't ask her to leave (black person present or not)!
This is true - Banks didn't look up anything or make the right statement and left out WOC completely. Her apology makes it sound like she has totally seen The Color Purple, too.
This touches on one of the reasons I refuse to see Wonder Woman. I'm not here for White Feminism. I don't give a fuuuck about that movie. They can take someone else's dollars, but they can't have mine. That film will only open up more doors for white women's storylines, white actress, and white tears of joy. That does nothing for my daughters or me in the long run. So, nah, hard pass.
ETA: Ghost came out before Sister Act. Doesn't that count? She had top billing right alongside Swayze and Demi Moore so she was already recognized and appreciated. (And Whoopi and I have the same very uniquely spelled first name.)

And this is why I refuse to watch new tv shows or go see films without diverse casts. If you can't cast a POC as a lead, than you don't care for me and mine. Peace out.

Just to clarify...the idea that Banks may not have seen The Color Purple is speculation from CEP, and not something she actually said, correct?
I thought the essay in Harper's Bazaar was very well written and an important read. Intersectional feminism is a huge topic that needs much more press. I also appreciated Banks' apology--she owned her shit.

Thanks for sharing. I can't imagine being close to my age and not having seen The Color Purple. Or the Wiz. Or Roots. We white women are ridiculous and harmful to others.

I'm not all the way through the thread. But YES. I remember watching The Color Purple on tv, elementary school aged, with my Mom. I agree to this being bullshit. \continues reading\
Whether at a panel, a luncheon, or in the writer’s room, how often have white women spoken over and/or chastised women of color for bringing up intersectionality? Where’s the outrage for the even more dismal statistics surrounding the lack of women of color in front of and behind the camera?
First I think she needs better friends. I don't not know anyone who chooses a Jay X song to feel like that have permission to use a racial slur. I've had a few who came to their own conclusion separately that an appropriately sized pause is the best solution.
There is certainly a problem in acknowledging WOC in Hollywood and we should not ignore that. There has been a huge problem on certain film genres. Personally I only like a few genres and my attention drifts if it is not action, fast paced comedy (not slapstick) or Disney. These are certainly led by a few certain looks which are of course not diverse.
I have seen The Color Purple, Glory, and many others. I know they are well made but since they are not my media preference I have to struggle through them. As for someone not knowing Whoopi before Sister Act is beyond my understanding. When I was younger the stars on Hollywood I could name fit on one hand and she was there.
However I don't know that complaining about movies that are finally starring and directed by women is the right place to focus energy. There is a long way to go toward any female representation on Hollywood. Despite having a longer list of credits Gadot made less than Cavill in the first movie of the series, etc.It actually makes me think of the cookie analogy. There is a plate of 12 cookies, in this example white men take 11. Them the last one is shared between all other demographics. Instead of attempting to take part of the single cookie from anyone, the focus should be on diminishing the lion's share that white men have.

I don't think it is as much about complaining as it is making sure we (white women) aren't leaving anyone behind. We have to acknowledge that while we might not have as much privilege as white men, we have more than WOC. So we have to use our relative power and influence on behalf of them, too. We can't just put on pussy hats and fight for women, and we certainly can't expect that black women will fight for women if we can't allow for and push for intersectionality. It's not about fighting over the last cookie. It's a rising tide that lifts all boats. Better representation for all under-represented groups.

I don't know how to respond to any of this. But all the bolded is part of the problem.
White women, for the last time, we are not on the same team. Stop pretending like you don't already know this. Your actions and my experience have proven otherwise, time and time again.

*headtilt*
Like as long as somebody else is making progress POC should be content to stand in the background rather than chance being less than supportive of a white lady? Mmmmmmkay. No.
I think the cookie analogy is exactly what WOC have been rightly complaining about on this board for like pretty much ever. How are we still not getting it? That is beyond flawed thinking.

This rumor is based on some inaccurate information and assumptions so your #allwomenmatter rant is factually inaccurate in addition to being tone deaf and ridiculous.
