My car was involved in a hit and run accident, so now I'm in the market :/ Originally, I was all for getting the Acura RDX, but I went to test drive the Grand Cherokee yesterday and absolutely loved it. Jeep's don't have the best reputation, so I'm looking for some personal stories on their reliability, etc.
We have both a grand Cherokee and an Acura MDX. We just traded our 2012 Jeep for a 2015 and the MDX we just got is a 2015 as well. I will say that the new Jeep feels much smoother than our 2012 Jeep did, and while we didn't have too many repairs on the 2012, the ones we did have were costly. Previous to the MDX we had a TSX that was a 2004 and ran like a champ, minimal repair costs and still worked great when we traded it! I have high hopes for the MDX.
I also love the third row in the MDX bc as the kids get older and want to go places w friends we can fit more car seats. The front seats are also insanely comfortable in the MDX, almost like a nice reclining leather chair. But they drive and run similarly (for now).

I'm glad to hear that you've been happy with your Acuras. I like the MDX, but really don't need the 3rd row. I was crazy about the RDX until I test drove the Jeep. The Jeep just has more of the bells and whistles, but I don't want to be dealing with nonstop maintenance issues. I'm just disappointed that I'm pretty much being forced into getting a new car (my current car is a Mini Cooper which now needs a new engine). I have until early next week to decide what I'm going to do!

DH bought me a JGC shortly after we got married and I really did love it. It did have a few recalls which were fixed without problem.(It was a 2012) Other than that, I just did regular maintenance to it. I just traded it in in March for my dream car. Nothing was wrong with it but DH surprised me with it since it was a deal we couldn't pass up. The guys at the dealership couldn't believe how great of a condition it was in and how smooth the ride was. They actually gave us more than it was worth. So the trade in value was actually high. I would buy another GC!
I just bought a jeep in May because my acura was totaled in an accident. Granted I bought a Cherokee not the grand because of the size. So far I love it. I really wanted to get another Acura since they hold as their value (as proof by my insurance payout on my old 06) however it wasn't in the budget. There's a few things that are taking a long time to get used too. The biggest for me is the start/stop feature. The car literally shuts down when you are on the brake like at a light. It's supposed to be to for cleaner emmissions and they "claim" it helps on gas but I haven't noticed. I'm finding I don't get at good gas milage - I'm averaging 18 miles/gallon and it's all city driving. It could be that this is a small SUV versus a car that I had. Other things like keyless throw me off.
The 1 thing I don't like is that the Acrua standard package is not standard on the Jeep - things like xm radio and nav and leather are not standard but are an "upgrade". I ended up not getting leather but because I wanted everything else it just tacked onto the bill.
You begin to like keyless over time. I actually can't imagine still using a key.
I have been doing a ton of research lately on SUV's. Some Jeep models are fine but there is one out there that isn't getting good reviews. I think it's the military looking one.
I have heard good things about Subaru and Honda CRV and they are in a similar category.
Why do people continue to buy cars with bad reviews when there are so many options with good reviews?
I would not buy a Jeep.
Eta: I did not mean that reply to be as bitchy as it reads. I think there are better options for an SUV than Jeep (Honda, Toyota, Subaru)
I get it... that's why I'm torn. I was hoping people would have nothing but glowing reviews for the Jeep and it would convince me that it's a reliable buy. My gut tells me to stay away though.. I just really liked it :/
Definite first world problems when my 2nd choice is the RDX.
Ugh, all these replies have me confused. Thanks for the input...
I've also looked at the Lexus NX and Toyota 4Runner. The 4 Runner is still an option as I haven't gone to test drive it. The Lexus NX is out.
My H and I both have 4Runners (don't ask). I can give you a review on them! We LOVE them (I have an SR5 and H has a Trail). We upgraded with nav, leather, heated seats etc. but the cars themselves are def. more "truck" feeling than smooth car feeling. There are not a lot of bells and whistles inside. But, if you are looking for a classic SUV with good cargo and 4WD capabilities, you cannot beat it.
They also hold up as good as any car out there and have excellent resale. But, if you like the luxury feel of a GJC, it probably won't feel as nice.

4Runners hold their value like crazy! I love them too.
I had a 2007 sport edition I paid $30k for new and I sold it in 2013 with 178,000 miles for $7600

My exBF got a GC after his Rogue got totaled and loved it. It had all the fancy bells and whistles and the towing capacity to pull his antique project car. I really enjoyed driving it whenever I got the chance.
We just sold our 2009 for a larger car. I am surprised by all the negative reviews because it was a great car for us. Granted it was starting to have some issues but it was 8 with 160,000 miles so that is to be expected.
My mom, sisters and brother(he has 2) all drive them and have had no issues at all. They have everything from a 2012 to a 2016. My mom is on her fifth. My brother is on his third.
My sister is only getting rid of her's because she is getting a minivan.

We have the GC Trailhawk version and love it. We purchased it in February of this year.
Prior to getting this I test drove a lot of cars and did a lot of research. The Acura was nice but it didn't seem to have the comfort that the GC had. Also test drove the Murano but again, went back to the GC. The back hatch for storage is awesome. We put a giant wine barrel in there a couple weeks ago and didn't have to put the seats down at all.
Gas mileage has been pretty good. I can get 20+ mpg with a mix of city and hwy. A couple weeks ago we did a lot of hwy driving for a trip and got 26mpg, with the AC going. As for the auto stop, my GC has a button I can push to turn that off. It doesn't bug me at all. We also have remote start on ours that is AWESOME!
I think with reviews you're going to get a lot of bad stuff. Personally I am more inclined to write a review when I've had a negative experience.
Don't do it! My husband had a JGC, and it was, hands down, the worst car we ever owned. He babied that car, did every single bit of suggested maintenance on schedule, put relatively few miles on it, and yet around 50k miles it basically started to fall apart. We swore never again for Jeep or any of the associated brands. We now have 2 Hondas and have been very happy with them.
I have an '08 JGC, bought almost new (1 year old). The only major issue I've had is the starter wiring came loose, but was an easy fix. Other than regular maintenance, I've had no issues at all.

Does the air conditioner shut off when you are stopped as well? We were looking into getting a Cherokee next year (though kind of rethinking it after this thread) but it would be a deal breaker if the a/c turned off at stop lights. I need my a/c

No. The a.c. still works and you can easily disable this feature if you want.
My sister and BIL have had a few JGCs without any major issues. He is attached to the Jeep brand and sticks with them. It's a little too small for their family to do road-trips (which usually involve the two of them, his mom, and their two kids), but they love it for driving around in town (usually just the 4 of them).
If you don't need a 3rd row, I also recommend the CRV -- there are great options available and it is a comfortable vehicle.
