Our county library is not, but the next city over has a very nice city library that is open 12 -5 on Sundays. You do not need to be a resident to join.
But I do think it's nice to give the employees the day off. You can always go on Saturdays.

Not everyone has that option.
I typed and deleted this before, but I guess it actually is relevant.
When I was a kid my mom's only day off was on Sundays. We were poor and didn't have access to a computer with a printer or internet, so she would take me downtown 45 minutes on the bus so I would be able to do my reports. It really hindered my academics in middle school because I often felt guilty that my mom had to take me on her only day off. Access to the library is some poor children's only resource for school projects. There should be 7 day a week libraries in each city.

Ours is open Saturday 9-4 Sunday 12-5 Friday 12-9 M-Th 9-9
Our library is really working hard to be a community center and available for all sorts people and families and tries to have hours that would work for as many people as possible within budget constraints. The kids programs are good and they have everything from baby story time to lego club and homework club (one of the librarians staffs the study room which has computers/printers/tables) and assists as able with things like sources.

Employees don't otherwise work 7 days a week though. Historically, Sundays have simply been the days that aren't part of the official workweek. I'm still in the field, but when I worked in a library, my schedule would vary each week so that I worked any assigned five days between Monday and Saturday. Sunday was always extra and 100% voluntary (and I did love working Sundays for the extra pay, although the demand was such that I worked only one Sunday a month or so).
During the school year, it is open on Saturday but not Sunday. During the summer, it's closed all weekend. Two days a week it is open until 8 pm.
The main library is open all weekend. Mine is a local branch.
I don't have kids but I work weird hours. I have popped in on a weekday in the middle of the day it has been packed with kids. But yeah, not the most convenient hours for working parents. The main branch is very close, though, so always an option.
Ours is closed on Sunday. M-Th it's 10 to 8, Friday is 10-6, and Saturday is 10-4.
The Sunday thing is part staffing/budget but I'm also in an area where many businesses are either closed or open later because of church.
My biggest complaint is trying to keep up with their holiday schedule changes. They often take multiple days off when you wouldn't expect it. Like for Thanksgiving they will close early on Wednesday (like 12 or 1 I think), closed on Thanksgiving of course, and then also closed on Friday and Saturday.
During the school year it is open for a few hours on Sunday. I also work directly across the street from the county library so I only go on the weekends to bring G.

I don't think many people realize that the library is used in this matter. I think many people just think it's this place to go to read books and that's it.
The library is such a valuable tool for any community, and until people value it as such, it will continue to be underfunded.
Our public libraries are closed on Sundays year round and Saturdays and Sundays for July and August. They have also had to cut hours during the week due to funding issues.
Our town's library is closed on Sundays during the summer, but open during the school year. The city has one library that is open on Sundays year-round, I believe. It all has to do with funding, unfortunately.
I agree with you, Jalapeñomel. Libraries are so much more than a place to check out free books (though they're fantastic for that, obviously). Ours is a great community resource. Libraries are so much more than they were 30 years ago and need to be funded accordingly. Unfortunately, they're not. Check out books, attend library events, go to the book sales, sign your kids up for the summer reading programs, etc. Anything you do at the library helps the library with numbers to show the voting public why their tax dollars are so desperately needed (& used responsibly).
NYC libraries are closed on Sunday because of lack of funding. Same reason why the hours are relatively short on other days. I suspect that is the case for most (if not all) public libraries that are closed on Sundays.

In a perfect world where funding would be better, hours would obviously be longer at the local branches. However, this is NYC and while the local library systems could close branches and therefore move those employees elsewhere and increase hours at remaining branches, the priority is to have a presence in as many neighborhoods as possible to create as much physical accessibility as possible, so staff have to be spread around.
Our library is open on Saturdays and Sundays. I'm not sure, but that might just be the case during the school year (at least, it was when I was still in school).

The main branch downtown has shortened hours on Sundays, but many of our smaller branches are closed.
I agree libraries are vital to communities for all the reasons posted above. Unfortunately, if they don't have the funding, I understand why they have to shorten hours or close on certain days. It sucks.
We have one in our county open from 1-5 on Sundays. The others are all smaller and closed. We are lucky our towns is open 6 days a week. A few of them are only open 3 days a week, and limited evening hours too. It is a funding issue in our county.
