I want to say as a kid (I live in the same town we grew up in)--the library was ALWAYS closed on Sunday. It wasn't until recently that they started having short Sunday hours.
Local library is closed on Sundays. We have 14 branches spread over 5 counties and only one branch is open on Sundays. Several in smaller towns are also closed on Mondays. All branches have at least some evening hours until 7 or 8.
While lack of funding is often the cause, there's also the possibility that the community use just doesn't support having Sunday hours. Our main branch is open Sundays but the two smaller ones are not - based solely on the fact that so few patrons came in on that day over an 18 month period. Yearly surveys since the change have not had a single person indicate Sunday hours are needed or even desired at those locations.
The county library is not open Sunday, but has better hours and patron friendly policies over the city library that is open Sunday.
County library hours are M 1-8 T 10-6 W 12-8 Th 10-6 F 12-6 S 10-5
Other country libraries have similar hours and there 5 in a reasonable distance (10 miles or so). Most adult events are Monday night but story time is Tuesday morning. DSL classes are offered Wednesday night's and several times during the week.
The city library that is open Sunday closed at 5 or 6 every day and is about 30 miles away.
I do love in the city but very near the unincorporated part near the suburbs. Public transportation goes to only 2 of these libraries and takes almost 2 hours to get there because of the schedule and stops.
Four out of the six branches in my county are open on Sunday, including Easter, Mothers Day and Fathers Day. And nobody is paid extra for working Sundays...
Within our city, maybe 25% of branch libraries are open Sunday, but concentrated around low income areas. The branches in general have rotating days each week that they're closed (for example, the one near me is closed Tuesdays, but our neighbouring ones are open that day and closed others).

Yes, 1-5pm on Sundays. It also doesn't open until 10am on weekdays/Saturdays, which I think is a change in the last 10 years or so due to to funding. Really glad they opted to keep weekend/evening hours and cut their early morning hours instead.

That sounds really shitty for the staff.
Yep. I had to work my 1st Mother's Day and my daughters 1st Easter because I didn't realize we'd be open and didn't request it off.
Employees get time and a half pay for a Sundays because it's not part of the normal workweek. So when budgets are tight, Sunday hours are usually the first things to go, or only some locations get the Sunday hours. And often, the demand may not be there either.
There is definitely at least one library in your borough that is open Sundays.
ETA: While Saturdays are part of the workweek, skeletal staffing also means programs are harder to schedule on Saturdays (and Sundays).
I don't believe that's true here. If you were full-time you would get normal pay within your allotted 40 hours regardless of the day and part-time (time and half would also not apply) here (at least that's my understanding).
Both libraries are open here, in my main city and neighboring which have small populations.
I think the system we're tries to have Saturday or Sunday hours depending on the branch. In some branches they do 2 half days if they can swing staffing for 6 full days. It is helpful that they don't all close every day.
I feel like a lot of things aren't conducive to working parents.
Read: swim lessons for the kid. No, I cannot go during the week at noon.
It was so hard for me to find a parent participation class for my son (who isn't old enough to do any activities without a PP class) that weren't in the middle of the week. And yes, swim lessons were SO hard to get.

Sorry, I should have added that that's the situation for us locally. I'm sure things are different elsewhere. I'll add an ETA to that post.
