I do find it funny that the people who are defending his "right to free speech" on my fb newsfeed are the same ones who were boycotting the NFL a few weeks ago. 🙄
I get that he said a sexist comment but I’m also wondering if the sponsors are using this as cover to drop him. Not at al excusing what he said I just don’t know if another athlete would suffer the same consequences.

I could be wrong, but I assumed it was because Dannon might be trying to sell primarily to women, they did say it was due to their concerns on belittling someone based on gender - especially since his other, presumably larger endorsements haven't dropped him.
"It is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to fostering equality and inclusion in every workplace. It's simply not OK to belittle anyone based on gender. We have shared our concerns with Cam and will no longer work with him."
...
Gatorade also issued a statement Thursday, saying, "Cam's comments were objectionable and disrespectful to all women and they do not reflect the values of our brand. Gatorade fully supports women who compete in, report on, coach for, or play any role in sport -- on or off the field."
Newton's other primary sponsors, including Under Armour, Beats by Dre and Buick, have not issued comments since Wednesday's news conference, when he responded to Rodrigue's question about wide receiver Devin Funchess embracing the physicality of routes with, "It's funny to hear a female talk about routes."

If a white athlete had said the same thing, I bet people would have smoothed it away as him "joking" and "flirting".Â
Hell we just spent the past week glowingly eulegizing an old white fart who made his living off of exploiting women's bodies. There are definitely two standards here. That said I support all men facing the consequences of their sexist actions. It just seems like white men get away with it. Or it takes a lot more to punish a white man for sexism. Anyone think Harvey Weinstein will have any trouble after today? Doubtful.

You can disrespect women but NEVER the flag.
Soldier DIED for the flag, not for women's rights. Obviously.

agreed.
the original article was terrible & didn't even include the offending remark. it's sexist, but pretty mild by the standards of the bullshit that's allowed to go on...
it was almost more of a sexist joke & sort of compliment. I get that it's still wrong, but this seems like an over-reaction I have no idea about the reporter...is she white? Is there some racial undertones to this?

Um... who cares if it was "sort of a compliment." She was offended, she talked with him after, and it was already public.
The reporter did not call Dannon and say, "You HAVE to drop Cam because of that remark." They heard that remark, made a decision and pulled his ads, but didn't terminate his contract. It might be an over-reaction, but not on the reporter who called him out for being sexist, on the part of Dannon. No other sponsors dropped him for that comment.
ETA: I don't know her background at all, except that she covers the Panthers - there could be more or it could be simple in that Cam said something insensitive and sexist, got called out by the reporter, and Dannon reacted bigger than the reporter.

of course there are racial undertones. By the way, the cute blonde white woman has already had to apologize for racist tweets in her past, so as annoying as I find Cam Newton, I’m going to have to side with him here. This is toxic white feminism, by the books.

don’t forget the media overplaying the poor little white woman narrative.

I am not defending her, just saying it seems Dannon is. I only read the OP article, so I didn't know if she was white. Sports reporters usually are, so I should have assumed, but assumed she wasn't based on her last name and a friend with the same last name?
ETA - Just checked twitter and yup, she is very blond, white looking and looks like she commended her dad on making racist jokes in the past on her twitter. So um... sorry. Foot in mouth for me.

Oikos moved because it hurt their bottom line. I don't know how long he's been their spokesman, but he's got some history from his college days (cheating) so maybe this was their last straw or whatever.
She seems gross. What he said was also gross.
If people get dropped for racist, sexist, or for beating theit significant others from now on...too bad so sad. If he's an "example" then f Dannon. That's all I got.

Holy crap. I don't follow football, and I certainly don't follow football reporters, but this surprised me so I went and looked. She used the n word in joke(s) and then pointedly included this was 4 or 5 years ago in her apology. And she's just apologizing now, because she got called out? And hadn't realized until this very day that it was an issue? Oh, no. Shut up and sit down, Jourdan with a U.
SO my husband just presented the following theory: that it’s similar to a man asking a question about the specifics of delivering a child. Guy says, “Was that afterbirth execution really difficult, though, since you’d had that extra-long episiotomy*?” *miniroller translation
As women- would we have a similar “Psh (giggle)...” reaction?
We understand women aren’t paid for childbirth, nor are they interviewed by professionals who have interviewed mom’s directly after aforementioned process. Nonetheless, it’s a semi-similar stance in that a woman reporter has never “run a route” in professional FB... (according to my H)

No, your H is being stupid. This is a person whose job it is to know the game. She wasn't just a random woman off the streets- she's a sports reporter.
That said, this particular woman sucks. Newton's remark sucks too.
And since I’ve already gone on and on in here, I’ll just say that I’ll never give a racist white woman the benefit of the doubt for anything. Fuck her.

Not to diminish my own foolishness in this thread , but this is probabaly a false equivalency that your DH is making - childbirth instead of a sport. It’s more like Bob Costas asking Olympic gymnast Simone Biles how she was able to pull off the “Biles punch front.” He hasn’t ever competed and isn’t ever doing that, but knows the gymnastics move and terminology.
She's racist. He's sexist. His career will be just fine. And it seems like hers will be too.
Sure, but does anyone think these are equal offenses? Â I would hope not. Â
Not at all. I'm not sympathetic to her at all. At the same time, I hate the comments he made. Though I don't think he should get any sort of severe punishment or lose his job. Which he won't. She should have, but we all know how that works.

Fair enough. I guess I get annoyed when people are willing to point out her racism, but still breathlessly rush to condemn his comments as well, as if there are really two sides to this coin.
In my ideal world, which will never come about, racists get what’s coming to them and nobody gives a shit. I know I certainly don’t.

Newp, it would be like if a male obgyn or OB nurse asked that question. Not the same. But it sounds like she's a twat anyway so...
