Oh and to ruin Ina. A few years ago didn't she say that she didn't have time to meet with a child who had cancer and that was his wish? I can't recall the details.
I read that her people turned it down for her (without her personally knowing about it) and when she found out about it she did invite the child to meet her.
ETA: and I really want that to be true because I love her.
I think she started blogging when DSLRs were first becoming popular. She was one of the first popular picture food blogs. I think she just hit the right timing, really.
I love Ina, but for some reason I haven't made many of her recipes. I have adopted her zucchini gratin as my own (although I use less milk because I thought it was too watery and less butter because holy weeknight artery clogging), and it's a delicious staple in our house. I tend to make Martha recipes for whatever reason. Martha and Ina are really fascinating people. Ina was on Katie Couric's podcast a few months ago. It was the most soothing interview ever.
Pioneer Woman is the WORST. Although I did confess to bex that last month, one of the meals brought to us by my church after babyharpy's birth was pot roast. It was DELICIOUS, so I asked for the recipe. I hated myself a little when she sent me the link and it was Pioneer Woman.
Ina and Jeffrey are basically my favorite celebrity couple. She could heat up a can of Chef Boyardee for him on her show for all I care and I'd still swoon.
The fact that Jeffrey has a fan club makes me so happy.
Ree has gotten to an irritating point with me. I have made some of her recipes and they're not bad, but there's a lot where I am a little "cottage cheese in lasagna? GTFO". I haven't even looked at her site since she went on the food network and partnered with walmart.
I really hope CEP doesn’t ruin Ina Garten for me. I love her foodie point of view. Mostly because she cooks ONE thing for parties, brings in lots of non-fussy cheese platter type stuff and specialty-bought (from local shops/friends ... lol) and just enjoys her guests. I have scaled down many a dinner party because of her POV and really enjoyed myself more.
Plus, the whole ocean-side, “oh look what’s fresh and local” theme is my dream lifestyle. And I love her dorky husband who looks surprised and delighted at anything she feels like making for dinner. Oh, Jeffery.
I don't watch, but this description might get me to check it out.
I’ve caught a part of an episode or two, but must say: I’m entertaining guests Saturday night & a larger group next Weds. This is EXACTLY what I needed to read, thank you livinitup! I’m definitely going to schedule in an episode or two!!
I don't know if Pioneer Woman started this blogging trend or not, but I want to throw my phone out a window whenever I'm just trying to find a recipe and I have to scroll through some stupid story about the blogger going to the beach or waxing poetic about how yummy the ingredients are. JUST TELL ME HOW TO MAKE THE GD SCONES.
And the pictures... THE PICTURES!!! Do people really need a picture of literally every step of the process?!? Here's a picture of a teaspoon of baking soda. Here's a picture of a teaspoon of baking powder. It looks exactly the same as the baking soda. Here's a picture of a teaspoon of salt. This one is totally different since the texture of salt is different than the texture of baking soda or powder.
I mean if you want a photo tutorial, cool. Just put the recipe first so I don't have to scroll a million times to get to it.
This!!!!!! Some bloggers don’t know what’s too much. I don’t need you to show me how to measure water and salt. And sorry but I so don’t care about your kid’s soccer game or your husband’s root canal. I guess they have to engage their audience to some degree, but it’s annoying to be cooking and have to scroll past all that to see the recipe.
I love Ina and Nigella. I don’t know if it’s true but I’ve read that Nigella’s husband is an ass. He’s no Jeffrey, that’s for sure.
I will say too that partly Food Network just goes in themes. And they all have a shtick. So 5-10 years ago, it was all Ina and Giada and Nigella and this luxurious but effortless lifestyle they give off, in their pristine white kitchens with fancy camera work etc.
Now in the past 3-5 years its become this down home cooking spiel - Ree, Trisha Yearwood was pushing it (laughably), and a few others - just wholesome outdoor living that requires lots of butter and cheese at the end of the day.
In a few years Food Network will be pushing another set of shows with a different shtick.
Ree's just been very good about marketing and packaging herself separate of food network (I think she's only had her show for three years?) And that's all it is. It's marketing and packaging.
Ina and Jeffrey are basically my favorite celebrity couple. She could heat up a can of Chef Boyardee for him on her show for all I care and I'd still swoon.

I started a freezer meals blog due to some requests by friends. I don't know that it will ever get much traffic. One because the food blog scene is already so saturated. And two because I don't know if it can be eye catching since I don't do tons of pictures and writing.
For each recipe I do a short into. Most of them are only a couple sentences because I can only think of so many ways to say,"this tastes good and you should make it". I also only post one picture per recipe. On occasion if there's a process that I think pictures would be helpful in explaining then I will post more pictures. They are always after the recipe though.
Basically I write the blog I want to read, but that may mean no one else wants to.
I've had good luck with the PW recipes I've made but they're just your basic church lady recipes, so not too surprising.
The one that has failed me has been Rachel Ray recipes back when she was huge.
My mom likes to buy me PW stuff for Christmas since she does most of her shopping at Walmart. I've been able to find one or two decent things in the past but everything this year is extra ugly. Even her loaf pan has flowers etched into the bottom of the pan. Who wants that?
I completely agree, and it makes me so sad because Ina is my personal domestic goddess. Her cookbooks are set up in my kitchen in such a way that my husband calls it my shrine. I have no shame about that. She should reign forever!
The same thing is happening all over the domestic art TV sphere. I remember when HGTV was real designers who designed expensive spaces for real people. Candace Olsen is my forever fav, and I enjoy Sarah Richardson as well. The Property Brothers can take their chinless faces and fall off a cliff, and this farce that everyone just loves MCM crap and that it is the only way to update your home is infuriating.
I don't want to watch amateurs slapping up a brass pendant and call themselves designers! I want to learn how to cohesively put a room together, or learn to throw a dinner party that my husband can invite his office to. I am a fucking adult that wants shit from Target to look like shit from Target and expensive shit to look timeless and like I know how to put a home together where people visit! I'm so sick of the consumerism, TRENDY BULLSHIT, AND ANTI-INTELLECTUALISM PERMEATING THE PUBLIC'S CONSUMPTION OF ALL ART FORMS! AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM IS DYING ONE CHEVRON TILE JOB AND CHEESE COVERED MONSTROSITY AT A TIME!
I think I just went full lasagna. Apparently I have very strong feelings about the Scripts network.
You feel better now? Hahaha
I loved Candice Olsen too! The seven head twins annoy me as well. I do like MCM furniture but yes, help me decorate on my budget, please. My first cookbook ever was a Martha Stewart one that I got when I was like 8. I still have that book and she's my go-to for recipes and design ideas most of the time. And now that's she's puffing weed with Snoop, I like her even more.
When mamaharpy was here in February to help me when H went into the hospital, I found an episode of Martha and Snoop on demand and played it for her. When it was over, she looks at me and says, "So, can we watch another one?" LOL! They are so great together.
I have every single Ina Garten cookbook except the most recent, "Cooking for Jeffrey", and I fully expect to get it for Christmas.
She has never failed me. Not once. Her recipes are amazing and, while DH and I laughingly mock her "Use GOOD olive oil. Use GOOD butter. Use GOOD vanilla." (LOL) I adore her. I'm glad to see that she hasn't been ruined here yet.
Her Linguini with Scampi and her Cheddar Corn Chowder are staples at my house.
I don't watch that much of either HGTV or Food Network to be honest (I used to) so I'm kind of immune to what is going on with HGTV now. I feel like its just the same show over and over with different hosts.
I will say that what is my big annoyance currently is blogs like Camille Styles and Cupcakes and Cashmere. Like....why is your house always so white and pristine. Why is your makeup always fully done. Why are you wearing white pants to take your child to eat ice cream.
Again, I know that's the "shtick" and that's the whole image they are going for, but it drives me BATTY.
Ina is one of my heroes and her recipes have never steered me wrong. I made her make ahead turkey gravy last thanksgiving and now I am in charge of bringing it every year because it was amazing.
Also I think part of the reason I am so sheltered from PW annoyance is because I don't read her blog (or any cooking blog really) and I don't really watch her show. So to me, she's just this face behind some cookbooks.
Except her thanksgiving show. I watch that one every year because its hilarious. "add two sticks of butter, not too much" or "let's pour the whole bottle of whiskey in there! taste, if it needs more, add more."
Ree is annoying. Period. I quit reading her blog when I realized her whole "I am just a little ol' farm wife" was all bullshit and her husband's family was totally loaded. Add in her stealing recipes from church cookbooks and I was done.
I find Ina a little out of my league. Giada bugs me, but maybe because I have only tried to watch her travel specials and I am only about the kitchen life.
I don’t hate Ree although some of her food is meh. I like Valerie Bertinelli’s show...I forget the name. Seems like she is always just trying to pull something together before her friends come over. I like that. And I have been favoring Ayesha’s home kitchen. Food network pulled that one from my app so maybe they are between seasons, but I have taken so many recipes from her. My kids demand all their popcorn now be maple bacon popcorn because I tried that recipe one time. Mmmm.

When I was feeling down about my apartment being messy shortly after babyharpy was born, my mom told me that my godmother used to say, "Only boring women have immaculate houses." LOL!
I really hope CEP doesn’t ruin Ina Garten for me. I love her foodie point of view. Prior to watching her show I didn’t see the appeal. In photos she doesn’t seem that interesting. But her cooking show is an absolute delight. She has a great combination of aspirational lifestyle and relatability. Oh hey *I* love having brunch with my gay best friend too, Ina, although it’s usually not at my Hamptons house. 😂
Ree is annoying. Period. I quit reading her blog when I realized her whole "I am just a little ol' farm wife" was all bullshit and her husband's family was totally loaded. Add in her stealing recipes from church cookbooks and I was done.
That's why I stopped following her too. I used a few of her recipes back when DH and I were first married and I was trying to learn how to meal plan but they were too rich and I realized that I often had a better version of the recipe in my collection of vintage Junior League cookbooks. The only recipe of hers I cook anymore are her burgundy mushrooms with Christmas dinner; they're fucking delicious with prime rib and make my house smell so good for days.
I'm still all about Smitten Kitchen because her recipes always turn out for me. I have been known to make my own birthday cake because I love her bittersweet chocolate and pear cake that much. I've also started appreciating Martha Stewart more and turn to some of her older cookbooks when I'm in a bit of a dinner rut.
I just read the article and I will say I don’t long for the lifestyle of being an Oklahoma prairie lady cooking for the Marlboro man. I just watch the show sometimes.

I've never watched or made an Ina meal so I have no opinion on her, but I've watched one eps of P.W and hated it and her. She kept going on about her men-folk (husband and sons) were busy on the ranch doing manly things, and she loved to see them so happy when they come home to a fully cooked meal waiting on the tabel, FU and your "girls belong in the kitchen and boys in the field."
Years ago when I was living in Korea with nothing to do, I checked out PW (this was pre-show). Even back then I found the blog obnoxious. No, I do not need a picture of you filling a pot of water to boil potatoes. I tried a few recipes, successfully, but I don't think I ever bothered again. I can't stand her show. I even mute ads for it. Fuck her and her men-folk we're just good ol' farmers schtick.
Is Ina's blender hollandaise any different than Joy of Cooking? That's my go-to, and it's never failed JoC (the 2000 version) was my first cookbook, and though I have a cookbook buying compulsion and have quite the collection, I still reference it regularly. That and an ATK collection.
I know it's not a show, but these days I'm all about Food Lab. There aren't a ton of recipes, but it's a lot of methodology and science. So, for someone like me who likes to experiment and do my own thing rather than follow a strict recipe, it's perfect.
The fact that Jeffrey has a fan club makes me so happy.

LASAGNASSHOLE 4EVAH!!!!!!
Don't even get me started on using the wrong sausage for the recipe.

Having grown up on a real farm and seeing real ranches, Ree annoys the hell out of me. It's all so fake. The one bazillion pics also annoy me. I'll just use all the school and church cookbooks when I want to make comfort food like that.
