I started this job at 10 days vacation + 3 personal days + 7 days/year sick time, which was a full week of vacation less than I'd ever had before. I tried to negotiate it up and they didn't budge, and I ended up taking the job anyway because I was in a bad spot.
Now I've been there 2.5 years, but they made me drain absolutely everything I had saved up to take FMLA after DD's birth so I am basically back to new employee status. This is one reason I'm job searching - even though my salary is fine, this and other policies make me feel under-valued as an employee.
My company moved to “unlimited” recently for higher up positions. If I get promoted one more level up I would lose my 6 weeks a year and go to “unlimited”. However I’ve heard that with unlimited policies people in general take less time because they feel guilty asking, and sort of conform to what everyone else is taking
Right now I don’t care how much others take- I log into the time tracking system and it says I have a lot of hours so I have no problem taking them. I think I’ll feel differently with the “unlimited” thing
Employees start with 2 weeks vacation, at 5 year mark they get 3 weeks, 10 years 4 weeks which is the max. 2 floating holidays. If they are exempt, PTO is given at managers discretion. For non-exempt I think they get 7 PTO days for sick days, doctors appt etc.

"Unlimited" is a farce. I had unlimited vacation at my first two jobs.
It's not even a matter of feeling guilty.
If you ever leave, there is nothing to cash out. You are literally getting paid less when you have "unlimited" vacation.
I get 180 hours of annual leave and 120 hours of sick leave. I can use annual for sick leave if necessary but can’t use sick for anything other than sick - kids, spouse, myself illness and/or doctor and dentist.
It accrues each month. Thank goodness I get this much bc I’ve taken a ton of sick leave for me kids in the last 6 months.
For those of you who have combined sick+vacation - do you just leave extra days in the event you get sick? I'm thinking of when my H got a concussion right after we got back from a 2 week vacation and couldn't work for 3 days. The trip was in September, so the only days we were taking off the rest of the year were for Thanksgiving - necessary since my family lives out of state. I feel like I'd be constantly worried about possibly having to cancel my holiday travel plans if the flu were to hit my house or something towards the end of the year.
Yes, that’s what I used to do. I always set aside a few “just in case” days. So out of my 20 days, I’d only plan vacation with, say, 17 of them and hold three aside.
Of course, there was that one year I used up every single vacation hour and therefore ended up “working from home” with a 103 degree fever and strep in late December. But my boss was cool about it.
The first 3 years with my company I had 21 days PTO, plus 10 holidays. Last year I got another week, so 26 days, and will get an additional day each year up to year 10 for a max of 32 days. We're allowed to roll over 5 days each year.
I have six weeks of PTO to be used for anything, 10 holidays, two floating holidays, and three days to get paid to volunteer.
On top of that, I can flex my schedule to four nines one week and then four nines and one eight the next, so that is an extra 26 days off (not in terms of hours, but in terms of days out of office). We also get fully paid 12-week maternity leaves or four-week paternity leaves.
I love my company.
My poor H, on the other hand....not only is his policy super crappy, but they have no automated system for what is a fairly large company. He should have two days of PTO left for this year, but his HR guy says his spreadsheet shows he has used it all, so he doesn't have any left. Seriously?!? (They tried to say he had used all five when he'd used NONE and we were about to leave on a vacation. H fought hard for that one, so he's letting the remaining two days go. But I'm ticked.)

Dh gets 12 days and that is complete shit. It's for vacation/sick/whatever time. Since his is so low and mine is flexible he doesn't use his much for sick kids which also sucks for me.
I get 4 weeks and am maxed out. I can use however I want. I do. It have to use them for Dr appts for me or kids, I just leave and go to those or show up to work late. I can also WFH with a sick kid. And my sick leave is just if you are sick, either WFH or stay home, no vacation days needed. We can not carry any over from year to year. Use them all or lose them and I could've used a few more this year.

H gets 20 vacation days, and unlimited sick time. Sick time can only be used for him, not if a kid is sick (we discovered that when he stayed home with our son after DS broke his arm). Up to 5 vacation days can roll over in a year.
I’ve never had a job that offered any paid time off, even when I worked in a full time position (in fact, this is a huge factor in my SAH with our kids since my unpaid sick days where daycare was still paid were absolutely killing our budget). Hs first job after college gave 5 vacation days and 2 sick days for years 0-5 then it went up slowly after that.
Umm, we don't have nearly the amount of vacation things as everyone else. H works for a small business and gets 2 weeks total for his 20 years. He gets paid sick time that he's used maybe 3 times since he was hired. I get 22 days of PTO for my 13 years. I have to take a week off between Christmas and New Year's since daycare is closed. Even with all the extra appointments that the kids have (autism), I still carry pto over. This year we are actually taking a vacation, typically we don't as we save it for tree kids.
I am a SAHM, so no paid benefits for me. H gets 26 days paid time off to use however he wants. He gets an additional paid day off on his birthday and three paid days to volunteer. He has been there 6 months; on his one year anniversary it will bump up to 29 days plus the other four.
That should seriously be illegal. A week? Hell naw. May I ask what you do?
PTO isn’t legally required at all. I’ve worked multiple 40 hour a week jobs with no paid time off whatsoever.
I know that there aren’t actually laws for this type of thing, but there should be. Things like sick/vacation time and maternity leave are pretty shitty as a whole in this country.

Oh, I totally agree. It’s absolute bullshit. But it’s still legal because we live i a country that puts the profits of shareholders above the needs of employees. Until that changes a lot of issues we have will continue to grow.
After 1 year, we get 40 hours (no distinction between vacation and sick days). At 3 years, that increases to 80 hours.
We also do not have paid holidays, so I use PTO for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I’m the Education Curator at a smallish zoo. Our PTO system is built more for the keeper staff, as we are limited on who is trained in which routines (and their work can’t be skipped if we’re a person short).

We get 4 weeks paid, can elect to buy another 2 weeks for 6 weeks vacation per year. We also get another 18 paid days off (fridays off in the summer, 5 days off at Christmas, etc.) in addition to 11 stat paid holidays.
Unlimited sick time. However, we are unable to use sick time unless we are actually sick (this whole using sick time for kids or appointments is so foreign to me!)
Teacher here. I get 15 sick days a year plus 3 personal days to use. Obviously I get winter break, spring break, summer vacation, plus most holidays off. Add in the occasional snow day and the fact that I can leave if need be at 3:20pm, I've got it pretty good. But, our personal days can't be adjacent to holidays (like if we have Presidents' Day off, we can't use a personal day on the Friday before or the Tuesday after), and there's very little flexibility when it comes to time off during the school day itself, so that makes it tricky.
After 9.5 years with my company I get 21 days of of vacation and 21 days of personal time plus I earn another 7-10 days of comp time for traveling. In 2019 I will receive another 5 days of vacation and another 5 days of personal time.
New employees at our company receive 10 days of vacation and 10 days of personal time.
I would have a really hard time having only 12.5 days to be used for vacation/sickness/dr appts for the entire year.
ETA: We also get 7 holidays, 2 floater holidays, and the week between Christmas and New Years that is not counted against our vacation/personal time.
