I just find it so outrageous that this is going to turn into a narrative about democrats being responsible for this shut down.
It wouldn't if Dems had a cohesive message going out right now. Every Dem with a microphone in front of them should be saying the same message. "The Republicans have a majority in the House and Senate and control the WH. We are voting against a spending bill that does not address DACA, CHIP, or whatever there focus is. If Republicans can not get a coalition of their OWN party to vote for their agenda the blame does not fall on us." Rinse and repeat.
A-fucking-men.
Why are democrats so afraid to speak out, stand their ground? (Edit: I see this is discussed above RE re-election, but frankly I’m tired of dems being a doormat for this nonsense)
That surprises me too. I thought Klobuchar would be somewhat safe due to popularity, the Pharma amendment Bernie supported, her Progressive reputation, etc. But it absolutely makes sense that she's quiet with her seat being up for grabs in 2018.
I checked my senators FB pages and noted that Patty Murray has been commenting but Maria Cantwell has been silent on the subject. She's been posting mainly environmental stuff since that's her primary focus. Her seat is up in 2018 and there are a bunch of asshats - er, Progressives - calling to primary her because she didn't vote for the Klobuchar amendment (though I go to her page and Patty's regularly to yell at them to check her vote on Wyden and which Rs voted for Klobuchar and why because they're total one-candidate Bernie-as-a-Savior morons with no focus beyond St. Birdie.)
Cantwell is way more vulnerable than Klobuchar. I think She and Donnelly and Manchin are the top 3 we are most worried about. The good news is that I think enough Democrats are saying what needs to be said. I dont personally feel like anyone should jeopardize their seat over it, especially to make what is largely a rhetorical point. A shutdown will be very unpopular among the democratic base even if it is with “good” reason and more the fault of the Republicans.
I have been and remain extremely pissed at the Bernie supporters out here (you know, "75% of Washington Democrats supported Sanders!" "Murray and Cantwell are bought by Pharma!" contingent) that want to primary and get a "progressive" in there rather than a Democrat because we're all DINOs that supported Hillary because she had a vagina. They show up very regularly at the Tuesday meetings set up by Murray and Cantwell reps at their downtown offices. My local Dems party has become decidedly left. I'm more active in a local "Democrats of the First District for Hillary" because of the hard Sanders Progressive support in my district that have been pushing away anyone that doesn't show 100% "progressive" values (e.g. Hillary supporters.) I shall be working hard for the Cantwell campaign this year.
I mean, posting on their own twitter or Facebook isn’t controlling the narrative. Everyone gets to control the content on their personal accounts. There’s no way for D’s to control those statements. Is that what people in this thread are meaning when they say controlling the narrative? Every D that I follow has made a statement today saying that R’s are responsible.
ETA: I’m not trying to be combative with you. I just am wondering what people would have dems do differently at this point.
I was surprised that one of my leans-liberal friends was posting that she was angry at the democrats for this. At least for her, the message is not getting through. She's in Sacramento, I'm not sure who her rep is.
My stupid blue dog rep (Kurt Schrader) sent out some bullshit yesterday that he was really angry at the lack of leadership, but he carefully didn't call out which team's leadership. It read like he was trying to have either side read into it that he was blaming the other party. I know I'm in a purple district, but I am so fed up with his fake bipartisanship. I mean, I know it's important to reach across the aisle but he does it on things that make no fucking sense, just so he can say he's mavericky or whatnot. Bleh.
Merkely has been excellent as per usual. Wyden is quieter, but that's also his style.
Is she in Sacramento proper or one of the bedroom communities? Because while Sacramento proper (6th district) is decidedly blue, many of the surrounding districts are not. I'm stuck in 4 with Doug "Toolbag" LaMalfa (whose election signs all have a cowboy hat on them, if that gives you an idea of his leanings.). I hate him with a passion, but because my district is solid red, I get a LOT of political advertising and messaging that leans right, so I can see this. It's hard to feel hopeful when everyone around you is still drinking the Kool Aid.

I'm not sure, we we grew up together in Redding though. So even if she's not currently in the 1st district, we still have friends and family there.
Growing up liberal north of Sacramento was an experience. Beautiful country, but the politics were nasty and depressing.
