One week ago today, the president used all the stagecraft the White House could muster to portray immigrants as non-human. Some may honestly believe this was not about labeling all immigrants as animals to distract his base and the traditional media from the ever-growing clouds of collusion and corruption overhanging this administration. Some might actually see this as a sincere attempt to micro-manage California’s county jails. Not so much us. For us, now seems a good time to use the voice of humanity at the heart of cooking to try, in our way, to both defuse the fear he is trying to create, and bring the focus back to what he is trying to hide.
Browse our stores or our website and you will be hard-pressed to find anything that was not brought to our shelves as a gift from immigrants. In the desire to pass on the dishes of kindness and caring of their youth to their new families and communities, immigrants blessed America with the greatest diversity of flavor any nation has ever known. We are grateful.
My Penzey’s stash is out of control. I’ve given to friends randomly and as gifts. I saw a great idea yesterday to put them in baskets for fundraisers or give to food pantries.
My only complaint about Penzey’s is the glass jars. I love them for the first batch, but wish you could buy refills. Lots of recycling places don’t take glass and there are still MANY places who offer minimal to no curbside recycling. All of those bottles & lids generate a lot of trash in landfills. I emailed them after their last promotion, but didn’t hear back from them.
lilac05, after the first batch I have been buying spices in the largest packets and putting the unused portions in my chest freezer. Not totally ideal, since you still have the packaging from the bulk pack.
I also reuse the jars for the dried herbs, DIY chili powder, and DIY tomato sauce thickener (I dry the skins from the tomatoes I use for tomato sauce and grind them up to powder) that I make every fall. And for any rubs that I make too much of for a recipe.
I also use them for non-spice purposes. I have one large jar full of buttons. I also keep touch up paint in them.

My spice cabinet is overflowing. I love this company! Do any of you have a good spice rack that holds Penzey’s sized bottles? I might have to resort to building something.
Penzey's lover here. I had a large stash in my old house and left it behind. I also need a spice rack of some sort. Right now, it's just a Container Store thing mounted on the inside of my pantry. I would like something closer to my stove. But I can't wait to see what the freebie is this time.
I think you can buy smaller bags of their spices in the stores to refill the glass jars. At least the last time I went to the store you could.

We got a couple of these wooden spice boxes from Target. They hold 2 rows of the bottles perfectly.

Almost all of the spices come in plastic bags that I use to refill my jars. The bulk price of the spices in the bags is cheaper than buying jars as well.
This reminds me, I'm still waiting for my free box from last time.
Me too. They just got in a shipment of the 1/4 cup sized jars to fulfill those back orders. They're not doing the promotion in-store this time due to the demand of the last one. They don't like back-ordering but they'd rather do that than say "sorry you're SOL." I'm willing to be patient for a good cause.

You can buy empty glass jars from them for spices you use often (I have a few for the granulated onion and garlic, and their taco seasoning) and buy the spices in bags and refill them that way. They come with a few blank labels too, so you can rename them/reuse them if you like.

That’s great news! I’m new to Penzey’s, so all of my stuff has come in jars so far. I’ll have to look into that! Thanks!

Not sure if you shop only online or have a store nearby (I'm guessing online because you would definitely have seen the bags in the store, derp!)...but if you go through the drop down menu when ordering online and putting the individual spices in your cart, there will be options for different sized jars and different sized bags.

Online only, unfortunately! After I posted, I went to the site and found it. I could swear that I’ve never seen the option for bags, but it’s definitely there! Thank you!

Spice Stacks work well. I love mine and the Penzey's bottles fit perfectly.
I just noticed I was running out of lemon pepper seasoning last night, and I definitely need more taco seasoning! I love them. I got my mom a pin from them after the Women's March, so now she uses them too.
What would you all recommend for a DH who's into fancy food?
Just go ahead and buy one of everything. We have loved everything we have tried.
Their boxes make fantastic gifts. The boxes are sturdy and look very nice. They also include little cards with suggestions of how to use most (all) of the spices in it. They also usually throw in sample package or two in every shipment.
They’ll have free shipping on orders $15+ tonight, but usually it’s $30. They run free shipping on $20+ fairly often. They have lots of good sales/promotions, so it’s worth getting on their mailing list or following them on FB.
My version of cooking is like boiling water and opening jarred sauce, but I have decided to order whatever the special is tonight and use it as inspiration to really cook.
Not that they are particularly fancy, but Mural of Flavor, Sunny Spain and Sunny Paris are our favorite blends.
I like that using a blend like one of those is an easy way to make something relatively simple and easy to cook, like fish or a boring vegetable, taste like I put more time and thought into it. I love to cook and spend a lot of time preparing a meal with a zillion ingredients, but sometimes it is fast and easy for the win.
I dont have a lot of the blends, but we have a pretty good sized drawer full of penzey's spices and seasonings that gets a lot of use. I particularly like their different types of cinnamon, their garlic powder, and the different types of pepper...the basics. I think the only things that I haven't really cared for have been their za'atar and the smoked Spanish paprika.
