I remember my grandma doing stuff with the fridge food and she was a Greatest Generation baby. So many condiments and Tupperwares full of old food. Maybe it's an age thing and not a generation thing?
I agree with this. I think a lot of the things being complained about are due to the age of the person, not their generation. My dad is the only true boomer of his family (all his sibs were born in 1944 or earlier), but I see him behaving more like his older sibs as they get older. A lot of the behaviors in this thread just sound like older people, and that's what boomers are now.
Add me to the list of people who has a mom that blares the tv. It's always SO LOUD when I go over there. She claims its because her DVD player or the recorded tv or something need the sound to be up higher, but I went to pick up my son the other day and it was BLARING in the background while they were playing a game. I always immediately turn it down now without even asking because it's just stimulation overload. She'll try to carry on conversations over the thing and everything!
My mind is blown seriously that people don’t have their tv on all day. 😳
I used to literally watch TV for a living (testing TV-related software) and in the final years of my job doing that I had 3 TVs on my desk (all tuned to different channels), and at least 3-6 other people in the same open workspace with their own 1-2 TVs on (also tuned to different not-muted channels), and then I'd come home to my H having the TV on until 1 or 1:30 am with a sleep timer in bed. So, roughly 15-16 hours of TV exposure per day.
I relish the quiet most days now.
Although I do watch YouTube videos during the day, or sometimes listen to a podcast. And lately I've been re-watching Star Trek DS9 while I play Candy Crush or screw around with other things, but it's not everyday.
And I will add that having multiple TVs turned down low to a dozen different things eventually becomes a sort of white noise you don't notice, and is significantly less annoying than two TVs blasting the same channel from two different rooms where one has a slight delay and you get a weird sort of echo.
Has anyone answered "Alaska: The Last Frontier" yet? (Only read the few following and didn't see a response yet. And no, I don't watch it. I've seen ads and Googled it but my H, who is a GenXer, would watch Ice Road Truckers and The Deadliest Catch right alongside Shark Tank. He's truly more of a Boomer than I am. And I'm actually, technically the Boomer in the family.)
I need to have the TV or the radio or some white noise on. I have ADHD and cannot function without distractions to keep me from getting distracted. But I turn to Alexa for music and podcasts as much as the tv for HGTV or SVU white noise now.
is that the one with the crazy family or the depressing one? My H watches Deadliest Catch and Goldrush and we sometimes watch the Alaska shows. I am kind of fascinated by their lives TBH
Most of the "Alaskans" on those shows aren't Alaskan. lol

I say this all the time about Jersey Shore. Most of them are from NY.
Someone in a fb group just asked for recommendations for someone to come and mount their FIVE TVs in their new house. FWIW, she looks like she’s in her 20s. Five??!

My parents rarely watch TV. DH and I rarely watch TV. He watches sports mostly. I do watch Netflix on my computer a lot though, and the kids pretty much only watch You Tube crap on their phones. So our TV will often go a long time without being turned on.
We have never turned it on for 'background noise". I just went to visit a friend and she asked me to turn on her kitchen TV while I was visiting. Why? I have no idea, she wasn't watching it, it just made it hard to hear each other talk.
FIL has the TV on all the time, but constantly flips from channel to channel. I tried watching some outdoor show with him last time we visited and I ended up going to another room to finish the show because he switched to a rerun of Two and a half men partway through the show.

It is a waste of electricity to have it on all day if you aren't actively using it. If I need background noise, I can listen to music. I am usually the one in the house who is constantly going around turning off the tv because someone left it on and then wandered off.
Ah! We’ve turned the corner into husbands! My H is turning into an old man before my eyes: he’s started to repeat the end of everything I say as a question: Me: “We need to stop at the hardware store.” Him: “The hardware store?” Me: “Yes. The hardware store. I need some seedling pots.” Him: “Seedling pots?”
Grr. Also he’s starting to find things like saying “turlet” funny.
This is hilarious. And reminds me of this ad campaign, which I adore :youtu.be/ZyDYovg51UE

I wonder how much of the TV preference is an introvert vs extrovert thing. My H is another one who always has to have noise of some kind. I swear, silence is anathema to this guy. He's a super extrovert... the more external stimulation, the better. I am the complete polar opposite, and quickly feel overwhelmed, especially by noise. He respects my needs by wearing headphones when he needs noise.
We didn't have a TV for 3 months during an international move over the summer, and I honestly didn't miss it that much. During the summer there's so much else to do. Now that the weather's cold and it gets dark early we will watch a few hours in the evening after dinner. We haven't had cable since 2010 though, so we mostly watch Netflix.

The Kilchers are Alaskans, but they don't really live in the middle of nowhere like the show suggests. Like many reality TV stars they are great at monetizing their activities, though!
I am kind of fascinated by the people who are willing to fish as shown on Deadliest Catch, whether Alaskan or not. That is a seriously dangerous and miserable-looking profession.

Last I knew my parents had 6, including one that is the old kind that were the little tv that has the VCR built in under it so it's not connected to cable, he just watches VHS on it. They used to have another one in their kitchen, which is one big room with their living room which also has a tv and shares a wall with the family room tv, but it died.
When the movie stores in town phased out VHS my dad went in and bought most of them. And when the stores closed down totally he bought a lot of their DVDs. They just have a family video now and he goes in whenever they have a dvd sale. He keeps having to add more shelves to their house to store them all.
My mom came to visit this weekend. Instead of forwarding me her itinerary she printed it, scanned it and sent me an email with an attachment of the scan.
She brought with her pizza sauce she canned herself in 2012 and got mad at me when I said we weren’t going to use it. She played solitaire on her phone for 5 hours straight - literally all afternoon. She does recycle, drives a tiny car and hates Trump though, so I can’t compalin too much.

Oh yes...the Kilchers are totally Alaskan. Homer Alaska. And Deadliest Catch--of course they're not all Alaskans because it's a fishing boat and crew members can come from everywhere. But the rest of those Alaskan "reality" shows where they're living in the wilderness..yeah, no...they're not Alaskans.

I don't watch enough TV to be aware of other Alaska shows! Guess that's on me.
This thread is the best. I can so relate to pp's about the lights in the living room. My parents act like they've never even thought about switching a lamp on once it gets dark. And they have 3 refrigerators stuffed full of crap. One is the designated "drink fridge" tho I mentioned recently that they need to start putting some of their 14 different salad dressings in there instead.
My mom has 21 year old salad dressing in her fridge. I check to make sure it's there every year when I go visit. My SIL said she puts it out with her bagged lettuce salads she serves to guests. The best part is that she bought a new fridge maybe 10 years ago and had to move it from one fridge to the other.
She also HAS to have a SUV (on her 4th Highlander, had a Santa Fe in the middle) because "what if I have to haul something"? She's 74. I don't know the last time she's hauled something.
Anyone else have a Boomer who watches all the Alaska/gold Rush/ice road trucker stuff? Or the super depression vet shows on animal planet? Fil is always calling dh "did you see last night's gold Rush?" Or will tell me that the vet guy is rescuing a dog that fell down a well while trapped in a burning shoebox on tonight's episode. Dh always reminds him we don't even have those channels.
And they will turn the same show on in the living room and in the kitchen, you can literally sit on the couch and see both of them. But somehow the kitchen tv is about 15 seconds behind so it echoes.
This is my dad! He watches the gold rush, moonshiners, pawn stars.....whatever other random shows constantly! The weekends are constant re-runs of this stuff!

I think fil watches the pawn stars too but he was really into the picker guys for a while, like could tell us what places they claimed they were going now. I have no idea how he knew so much about them (he's not really on social media, so he wasn't following them or anything).
What in the actual hell is this?! They give you a portion size for ants!
My dad is diabetic and keeps these in his desk at work. He also tosses a few in his carry on when he travels. It is an easy way for him to eat when his blood sugar gets out of whack.

Picnics, plane food, snacks for the diaper bag, all good uses of this product.
Your primary home source of peanut butter = NOT a good use.

We have SIX tvs in my house. I admit, I'm one to turn on the tv just for background noise. On the days that I work from home I put on ABC in the morning and just leave it on all day. That's the tv in the LR, there's also a tv in the family room, H's garage, and 3 kid bedrooms. I've stood firm about no tv in the master, I just don't think it's necessary. We're actually looking in to cutting cable because we're paying a fortune just to rent cable boxes.
