If the Dems bite on the 2.1, do you think it’s a win for trump? Even though he didn’t get the 5? I think it would be.
Also, who has more pressure to stop the shutdown at this point? Dems Or gop?
Anything that gives a penny towards that monument to racism and authoritarian rule is a win for Trump and a loss for humanity.
I totally agree. I feel bad saying I hope the Dems stand firm because people are out of work but it makes me sick to think of more money going to a bullshit wall.

I totally understand and am pissed that innocent people are caught in the crossfire. But we can’t cave on this. If we lose this battle I firmly believe our descent into an authoritarian regime will be complete.

I'm stuck here too. I acknowledge that I am coming about this from a place of immense privilege. I don't work for the federal government. None of this is impacting my ability to live my life. I am not sure I would not feel very differently if that were not the case but right now, I want the Dems to fight to the death on this. I don't want them to give in one bit to funding this idiocy.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Even my BIL who I'm pretty sure voted Trump, works for the government, and has to work without pay is sitting in my living room saying the wall is bullshit, and this shutdown is warranted.
Question- My Mom is a Fed and has worked for DOJ for many years. She very recently transferred to a different branch. She doesn’t care about the shutdown because “we’ve always gotten paid”. Is that just *she* has always gotten paid? Or is that all Federal emplyeees? My understanding was lots of people will be stuck at home, or working without pay, and not getting back pay. She was completely blasé about the whole thing.

Yes, people will be home without pay, but in the past people have gotten back pay via a Congressional vote when the shutdown ended; so it's not guaranteed.
ETA: for fed employees - I know nothing about contractors
As a contractor at a govt site, we don’t always get paid. My last company held the money for two years until our contract was ending. My friend on a different contract (same office) never got paid for it. This time we are hoping to work from home, but my company is a real pain about us working from home with kids, so I’m not sure if I’ll have to go sit at company HQ since it’s Christmas vacation.
My sister does not worry as much because they have gotten paid retroactively after a vote but she is in a comfortable enough position not to be living paycheck to paycheck (not to mention her department is still funded). If the shut down lasts past the next pay day (from what I have been reading, all hours on the next paycheck have been "worked" so it should be a full check, correct?) then there is an issue with paying bills, mortgages, daycare, etc. Especially over a holiday season where there is a tendency to charge things you normally wouldn't a delayed pay check can cause issues.

Mine does not, he’s like this is what this president was voted in to do, stick it to the man Trump!

Feds have gotten back pay in the past, however, there are a lot of contractors and people who do work for the government who are impacted and don't get paid.
It’s the Wild West for contractors. Depends on the company, depends on the contract. The company I work for has already put out guidance saying take PTO if already scheduled and if work is at an all-stop for you, the company will pay salaries out of overhead. It helps that it’s only a partial government shutdown.
During the Ted Cruz shutdown back in 2013 I remember it was just us contractors and essential government personnel. It was pretty awkward since nothing had changed for us.

Mulvaney (clips from other shows) said they are now asking from 1.6-5 now. Apparently Schumer had offered 1.6 at one point and now it’s changed to 1.3?
I don’t see the Dems gaining anything from giving in on the wall at this point. The only people that care about the wall is Trump’s base and they’re not going to vote Dem in 2020. Once Trump refused to trade the DREAM Act for wall money, he lost leverage with them, IMO.
I’ve seen Merkley, Murphy, and others tweeting about how the administration has spent only 6% of the appropriated 2017/2018 border security money and I think that is a great message to be getting out. They haven’t even spent 94% of the money they already have on securing the border, yet are shutting down the government because they didn’t get wall money.

I keep trying to find a source for the 6% tweet and can’t. Do you have one? lots of twitter comments are asking for a source, too, and no one seems to have it.

Maybe it's just me, but why aren't we seeing more about this? Trump is just having a trumpertantrum, and I just hope he doesn't get away with it. Even 1.3 billion.
This is awesome. One bright moment of cleverness in a sea of bleakness.
DH got paid today - woo hoo!! I am so relieved. We can skip one paycheck, maybe even two, but I'm expecting this thing to drag on so this check really eases the anxiety. Plus his step increase kicked in and he got a bunch of overtime, so we're okay for now.

Nancy was just on TV saying they are presenting the republican bill that passed in the senate. She said they have made no changes and stressed this was a republican bill.
