DH is currently getting his disability, but was told by a friend that if the shut down continues too long that it will stop because of lack of admin or something. He hasn’t been able to get a clear answer on it.
Those soldiers trying to finish the paperwork and start receiving disability are stuck completely. There’s no one to process their claims.
This is us. DH has a claim that has been pending for 4 years and it currently in appeal.

Federal employees affected by the shut down should qualify for unemployment compensation. If folks are struggling financially, they should absolutely apply for benefits.

My H is a fed and I work PT. The concern I have is that even when the government reopens, it’ll take some time to get that back pay to employees, which means the effect it has on paying bills doesn’t immediately go away. I can only work so many hours and can’t make even half of what he makes in a month.
Our car loan lender is a federal credit union and offered a forbearance on our car payment, which was lucky, but I imagine there are a lot of people in worse shape than us.
This shutdown doesn’t affect the military. That’ll come later in the year.
But, yeah. Either Dems cave or Congressional Rs do. Trump won’t unless Fox changes its tune.
It doesn't currently affect active duty members as far as receiving paychecks, but there are a lot of civilians who work with the military, and a lot of government functions we depend on for our day-to-day operations. So just because we are still going to work and getting paid doesn't mean that we're "not affected" by this shutdown.
All true. I’ve had people say this to me thinking I am working without a paycheck though. There’s a misconception that this shutdown is affecting anyone working for the Federal government including active duty military. It’s awful enough.

But this doesn’t help people who are working for IOUs, of which there are hundreds of thousands.
I honestly don’t blame TSA agents for a sick out. They make like $14/hour and can’t exactly pick up a shift tending bar if they’re showing up to work at the airport.
CNN: Hundreds of TSA screeners, working without pay, calling out sick at airports.
So border security and airport security suffering due to trumps tantrum.
Yup. I flew back from Canada on Wednesday, and there was a noticeable emptiness to the customs processing at SFO. There were no stray agents just wandering around. I was on a small flight, so there weren't long lines or anything, but it wouldn't have mattered because the few people working were basically just waiving people through. The one I had didn't even talk. I am not even sure if she looked at my passport. And they didn't have me go through the baggage screening like they usually do. It was bizarre and a little scary how lax it felt.

What a clusterfuck.
If I'm understanding correctly, they qualify for unemployment compensation though it would have to be paid back should they receive their regular pay after the fact.

I feel very much for all of the furloughed workers. It makes me VERY angry that they are being used as pawns in a political pissing match, and that the person responsible refuses to be accountable for his actions.

I definitely do not blame TSA agents for calling out sick. This is terrifying to hear about though, it makes us even more vulnerable than we already were.
I am just sick for all Fed employees not getting paid and orange fuckhead boosting about keeping the gov't shutdown for however long and considering declaring a statement of emergency for wall funding is sending my BP through the roof and making my headache worse.

I had the opposite. Flew out of Punta Gorda, FL -- small airport with only a few gates. They had two TSA lines (that is all they have) and there were at least 12 agents out there. I think there were a few in the office too. It seemed to me like they were training because they searched a lot of bags and were slower/more thorough. We walked right up and did not wait in line at all.

I know nothing about unemployment but how does that work if they do end up authorizing back-pay for these employees later on? It seems like it could become complicated.
ETA: took too long posting, I see this has been covered. What a PITA that would be for them.

Unfortunately, the right doesn’t see this as a Trump tantrum, but as Democrats being obstructionists. I don’t know how Democrats can change this messaging, but they need to do it loud and immediately. And all over he place.

Yes, if back pay is authorized, unemployment benefits must be paid back. And yes, it is a huge PITA.

By the way guys, the courts are going to run out of money in a week. The TLDR is that they will have to come up with a plan for how to run on fumes as there is not currently one.
I wonder if Trump and McConnell are using this shutdown to slow down the Mueller investigation. (It will not go away, and I imagine Mueller can still work, but there may not be hearings and the like.)
Right? Mortgage companies and landlords aren't gonna be like, "Oh yeah, I heard about that shutdown. You can pay me whenever you get paid again, no biggie." Even if some folks have emergency funds to help them through this period right now, if this lasts long-term and the fund dries up, the amount they will be paying on interest and late fees will be astounding for most. Fuck Trump.
I think the OPM deleted their sample letter to landlords that asked to barter painting/carpentry services in lieu of rent. The link in the tweet no longer has a sample letter to landlords.
If you click on the link in the tweet, the letter is still there and downloads directly from that link as a Word doc.

I would imagine they HAVE to keep the courts open for certain things or run afouol with certain constitutional protections.

Yeah. The courts will have to go to reduced staff working on IOUs for that reason, but there's no way they will be operating anywhere near full capacity.

What a nightmare.
That also brings up an interesting potential issue. And by interesting I mean maddening and terrifying.
If you're represented by a federal public defender during the shut down, and that already overworked PD is potentially even more overworked and working on an IOU, does that bring the potential for some additional ineffective assistance claims?

VA/VBA is fully funded and not affected by this shutdown so your claims should continue to be processed and payments should continue to be dispersed.
He’s been fucking with people’s lives from day 1; causing anxiety and fear in homes across America, brown immigrant families especially. Why would he care about federal worker paychecks? Who will be his next target? He DGAF. People are negotiating with a madman.
Can I ask a question in this thread? Is the IRS funded? Will filing taxes work the same if the govt is closed, vs. if it is open? (I understand the part about the refunds--that they will not go out.) I'm just curious if the process is the same--will there be IRS workers to process all of the filings?

The VA is fully funded for 2019, so this shouldn't be an issue.
(As a side note, I process such claims if you ever want to PM me)
I heard a press clip of Trump saying he hopes there can be negotiations. Really? Does he even know what that word means?? To negotiate he'd have to be willing to concede some of his position.

The letter I’m seeing only contains samples for creditors and mortgage lenders. I no longer see the landlord sample letter. Is it coming up when you click it?

Negotiations are a two sided game of give-and-take. Not only does trump have no ‘give’, he has no ‘take’. The democrats are asking for NOTHING. No DACA protections, no extra money anywhere, no incentives whatsoever. There’s nothing for him to take. That’s what we call ‘bargaining against yourself’ and it’s a total loser strategy. Bigly.
The fastest way for it to end is for four republicans to just refuse to vote on anything McConnell puts up until McConnell reintroduces the same bill that the senate previously passed unanimously, and that the house has now approved.
Corey Fucking Gardner has a chance to be a hero here and find three more.
I’m confused about this now. Say the senate votes for the previous bill. Trump vetoes that. Don’t they then have to override the veto with 2/3? Why would we only need four for the shutdown to end?

In my experience, negotiating with a narcissist means that they pretend to lure you in, then try to wear you down through various techniques, and lose their shit if they don't get what they want. Negotiating for them doesn't mean compromise or any sort of give and take to reach a solution. The only solution is them winning. I doubt he's any different, and would guess* worse.
Mitch McConnell's winning streak on judicial nominees is hitting a speed bump.
The fate of 70 of Trump's judicial nominees is in limbo after McConnell and Chuck Schumer failed to agree on a way to move them forward at the close of the 115th Congress.

Agree. “Negotiation” to a narcissist means “a chance to manipulate you and force you to accept my terms.” There are only one-way streets.
