Edited to say they ARE getting paid right now. I got the wrong information from mom. It’s still no different, same situation for so manu others Trump says the shutdown could last weeks or months. My BIL and My (other) sister will not be getting paid until thid id over. How can they do this to our military and federal workers! I’m just so disgusted.
I don't believe Congress will let it go on for months. Even if 45 petulantly refuses to sign anything, they'll find a veto-proof majority on something.

I would bet serious dollars Trump doesn't realize this is possible.
Here's a Twitter thread by Been Wickler suggesting likely ways for it to end:
Including
"Here’s the reality: this shutdown could end with Trump cracking—or with McConnell simply overriding a Trump veto and re-passing the spending bill that previously sailed unanimously through the Senate and, in the next Congress, just passed the House."

They've been toeing the Trump line so much that I'm not sure they're willing to override him on this as a party. Especially when the wall is a huge issue for the deplorables.
IRS announced today that there will be no tax returns until the government reopens. Of course Trump doesn't care, he doesn't pay taxes anyway. I would think/hope this would outrage his base enough to make him back down.
This shutdown doesn’t affect the military. That’ll come later in the year.
But, yeah. Either Dems cave or Congressional Rs do. Trump won’t unless Fox changes its tune.
It doesn't currently affect active duty members as far as receiving paychecks, but there are a lot of civilians who work with the military, and a lot of government functions we depend on for our day-to-day operations. So just because we are still going to work and getting paid doesn't mean that we're "not affected" by this shutdown.
I think it's ridiculous that people's lives are being greatly affected by this and they aren't even in a position to do anything about it. As a fed I'm tired of being a pawn!!! (though I do work for an agency that is funded, but I'm still quite outraged)
The fastest way for it to end is for four republicans to just refuse to vote on anything McConnell puts up until McConnell reintroduces the same bill that the senate previously passed unanimously, and that the house has now approved.
Corey Fucking Gardner has a chance to be a hero here and find three more.

I have been fighting a full-fledged anxiety attack all day over this. DH and I are furloughed. We have savings, but not unlimited ones. And if we use up our savings for this, then we won’t have savings should we run into some other issue down the road.
Also money has always been a huge trigger for my anxiety since I grew up in a financially insecure household.
I was trying to drink less wine in 2019 but I think there is no way that happens in this Administration.

I'm so fucking sick over this because these are thousands of real people affected. Tangentially, in areas that employ a lot of feds, this will also be terrible for local businesses too. TAXES ARE NOT EVIL. They pay for all this shit around us that we take for granted. And all for a fucking useless, racist wall.

I think this is what they will try. At this point I'm not sure if I think Trump would sign it or continue to tantrum. I think we will find out.
I have a very hard time seeing Congress overriding a veto, particularly in the Senate. But weirder things have happened, and I have to believe they'd get to that point if the shutdown went on for months. Right now the pressure isn't on as high because the scope of those impacted is relatively narrow, but if it starts to impact tax returns, etc. that is going to turn the heat up.

He’s such an evil person. He’s fucking with people’s lives here, and that’s not okay. All to build a monument to racism that will be functionally useless.
I truly think his pea brain can’t comprehend the fact that people count on their paychecks to pay their rent or mortgage and eat. He has literally never once in his life wondered if the bills would be paid and he would have enough to eat and has shown repeatedly that he is entirely devoid of empathy. I think he truly doesn’t get that people’s homes and lives are in danger because of this. This isn’t an excuse, and the GOP needs to do their job, bring the bill that passed senate and the new house and override him to save the employees being held hostage in this ridiculous tantrum.

I wish I knew what the tax refund landscape will look like with the new tax bill. Maybe R Senators from states with lots of residents that get tax refunds are the most promising to convince to end this shutdown. Likewise, businesses that get more business when people get their tax refunds are going to be pissed off too, so those Senators will be feeling the ire. Although I feel like I read Texas gets a lot back but we all know how Ted Cruz feels about shutdowns.

He definitely doesn’t get that. That isn’t even on the radar. That isn’t even in the same area code as the radar.
This is 100% ego now. He must have the wall or he loses. And he cannot lose. Any collateral damage is non existent to him.
If Schumer caves, the lesson that Trump and McConnell will take away is to make more outrageous demands next time.
I hope for the sake of the country and the people suffering as a result, that it wraps up long before people start feeling the hurt of having to wait for tax refunds. But I feel strongly that a longer shut down now is a price worth paying, because if we fold, there will be more shut downs, more unreasonable demands, and more money wasted on this stupid fucking wall that will never be built.
Which reminds me, why the fuck hasn't a mainstream outlet actually covered the fact that the government doesn't even own the land that Trump proposes building his fucking wall on? The government is being shut down over a fucking pipe dream.

There was a question to 45 today in the Rose Garden briefing about eminent domain but of course his answer was just gobbledygook.

The (hopefully) good news is that I haven't been able to connect to anyone at Schumer's DC or NYC offices so I am hoping that means NYers are blowing up his phones and telling him not to cave. I will be so angry if he caves. SO angry.
How is it even possible to shut it down for a year, let alone yearS?
From Bloomberg-
“President Donald Trump confirmed that he told congressional leaders he’d keep the government closed for a year or longer if Democrats refuse to provide more money to construct a wall on the border with Mexico.
“I did, absolutely, I said that,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday, after he was asked to confirm an account of a meeting by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. Schumer said after the meeting that Trump threatened to keep the government shut down for “months or even years.”
DH is currently getting his disability, but was told by a friend that if the shut down continues too long that it will stop because of lack of admin or something. He hasn’t been able to get a clear answer on it.
Those soldiers trying to finish the paperwork and start receiving disability are stuck completely. There’s no one to process their claims.

The Democratic Party needs to spend some money blasting out loud, obnoxious ad campaigns featuring Trump's exact words about how he's gleefully continuing this shutdown.
Trump doesn't really think the government DOES anything. There's a combination of apathy and flat-out disdain for public workers. Old school conservative thinking mixed with the callousness of the Donald.
And most of his followers either 1) think the feds are riding high on the gravy train and should lose their jobs anyway, or 2) argue that people will still get paid because Congress always approves back pay, ignoring that people need to, like, pay their bills in a timely manner.
And McConnell claims he won't put a bill in front of the Senate that Trump won't sign, even though he has the votes to override a veto.

Right? Mortgage companies and landlords aren't gonna be like, "Oh yeah, I heard about that shutdown. You can pay me whenever you get paid again, no biggie." Even if some folks have emergency funds to help them through this period right now, if this lasts long-term and the fund dries up, the amount they will be paying on interest and late fees will be astounding for most. Fuck Trump.

I think the OPM deleted their sample letter to landlords that asked to barter painting/carpentry services in lieu of rent. The link in the tweet no longer has a sample letter to landlords.
