Can I ask a question in this thread? Is the IRS funded? Will filing taxes work the same if the govt is closed, vs. if it is open? (I understand the part about the refunds--that they will not go out.) I'm just curious if the process is the same--will there be IRS workers to process all of the filings?
I don’t think so. My BFF is a CPA and told me today that when she calls there’s no one taking calls at the irs — she’s trying to work out a problem a client has, but she can’t because they aren’t there. Or that was my understanding of what she told me.
This shutdown doesn’t affect the military. That’ll come later in the year.
But, yeah. Either Dems cave or Congressional Rs do. Trump won’t unless Fox changes its tune.
It does affect the Coast Guard, since they fall under the Dept. of Homeland Security, not the DoD. The rest of the military is not currently affected.
They did allow the CG to get paid for Dec but it’s up in the air for what will happen next. My brother is active duty and they are just in a weird holding pattern on waiting to hear.
The fastest way for it to end is for four republicans to just refuse to vote on anything McConnell puts up until McConnell reintroduces the same bill that the senate previously passed unanimously, and that the house has now approved.
Corey Fucking Gardner has a chance to be a hero here and find three more.
I’m confused about this now. Say the senate votes for the previous bill. Trump vetoes that. Don’t they then have to override the veto with 2/3? Why would we only need four for the shutdown to end?
A normal president, no matter how obstructionist, would not be able to get away with this over one relatively small (in the grand scheme of the whole budget) line item. Trump is of course much more of a wild card so it’s not clear what he would do, but McConnell will be up his ass if he thinks his caucus is going to suffer from the backlash of the shutdown and Trump refuses to sign, so the pressure will come from all sides.

The only thing I know is that a friend who is a manager at the IRS in our city is not working right now. She has been glued to the tv, because if/when something is signed, she will have four hours to report to work. Not sure about how everything will work at that point.
My H just came in and said the insufferable libertarians that wander the halls of his office will be lit if they don’t get their tax returns. For better or worse he judges the mood of the country on these guys. He’s not wrong.
DH works for NPS. He’s been shut down from the beginning. NPS employees are pissed because “they” won’t close the parks down completely as they did in 2013 because the optics were so bad. So, they kept some parks open, but unstaffed, and then we saw stories of overflowing toilets, people going off trails, bringing in pets, etc. Who is going to have to fix all of that whenever they actually go back to work?? Yep, the NPS employees. You know what else makes for “bad optics”? Furloughing THOUSANDS of people during Christmas!
DH keeps saying we’re fine, and we can surely handle missing one check, likely two. Once we get to that third pay period, we’d have to get creative. We’re lucky, too, as many of our friends are dual Fed families or single employees with little back up. It’s incredibly frustrating and depressing.

The IRS is not funded.
First of all, not everyone who works at the IRS is involved with the individual tax filing process. Currently, only about 13% of the workforce is NOT furloughed. However, the shutdown guidance is being revised to address filing season. I don’t know how many employees will be called back. I’m sure something will be published in the news. I have read in various news outlets that returns will be still be processed, but refunds will not be issued.
In addition to refunds not being issued, I suspect the date of filing season will be pushed back. There are preparations that have to be made to get systems ready. With two-three weeks of shutdown so far, preparations have already been delayed.
I was planning to file my taxes ASAP and use my sweet refund money to pay for a new HVAC system. SO HELP ME GOD IF I HAVE TO GO THROUGH SUMMER WITHOUT CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING.

I am pretty much in a echo chamber so everyone I know is blaming trump and now Mitch for the shut down. I know trumps base will always side with him but outside of my echo chamber I wonder who’s getting the blame.

Pelosi and Schumer
Yes and all the Democrats don’t care about our safety because the wall is such a great idea.

Seriously? He literally refused to sign the CR that was passed by house and senate. In response to Ann Coulter’s appearance on Fox News. Doe people really blame Pelosi and Schumer?

Well, I was planning to use my paycheck to buy food.

Most, likely the VAST majority, of them don't actually follow politics. They likely have no idea what happened. They just want the wall and trust that Trump knows best. Fear mongering has worked. Anyone not in favor of the wall is putting Americans in great danger for all of the OTHER PEOPLE to come over and TAKE OUR JOBS and KILL OUR KIDS!
So, if they know who Pelosi and Schumer are, they blame them. But many will just say, "We need a wall. It's the wall or bust. I trust Trump. End of story."

I had hoped people wouldn’t see it like that. The people we know in the military that don’t normally bring stuff up like this blame trump. Which was a nice surprise to me.
By the way guys, the courts are going to run out of money in a week. The TLDR is that they will have to come up with a plan for how to run on fumes as there is not currently one.
I wonder if Trump and McConnell are using this shutdown to slow down the Mueller investigation. (It will not go away, and I imagine Mueller can still work, but there may not be hearings and the like.)
DH’s understanding of this right now, re: courts running out of $, is that criminal federal cases will continue as normal, but civil fed cases will be put on hiatus. (He’s a fed criminal defense atty).

I'm in a red rural-ish area, and the FB comments on the news stories are all that the blame lies with "Chuck and Nancy/snowflakes/libtards" We aren't far from a National Park, and there are even those that are saying to close down/take money from the parks to build the wall, because at least the wall will keep us safe!! ... I'm in the VA mountains. Even if there were dangerous criminals pouring over the Southern border, I doubt they would come here.
The following of Trump in this area is... scary. Sometimes I think we're making some headway locally, but keeping tabs on FB comments typically shows otherwise. There is no logic or actual facts with these people. They truly believe anything that doesn't come from Fox/Hannity is propaganda.
If you click on the link in the tweet, the letter is still there and downloads directly from that link as a Word doc.
The letter I’m seeing only contains samples for creditors and mortgage lenders. I no longer see the landlord sample letter. Is it coming up when you click it?
