Isn’t it common for the opposing party to try to get an on screen rebuttal to this kind of thing? Whether they be the House speaker or minority leader or whip?
I’ve got someone swearing this was so disrespectful to the office of the presidency and this never happened to Obama, etc.
I think it's uncommon for the press to grant a President an Oval office interview in prime time, so anything else that might follow is therefore also uncommon. The PSA guys were saying that the networks refused to grant Obama time like this when he asked at least once.
It is very common to have rebuttals to the SOTU, which is the other one that usually happens in prime time.
Yes but it would require a majority of the caucus to force a revote or more likely force him to resign. If it reached that point I expect he’d resign rather then risk a vote that would split the caucus.
Plus the culture of the GOP, at least on the Senate side, is to follow the leader. Embarrassing him like that after the success he’s had for institutionalizing their ideology would be unheard of. I don’t think most of them even give a shit about parts of the government being shut down TBH.
I think that, when most of the GOP sees things like, "only 17% of X agency's workforce is retained, the rest are furloughed," there are way too many people who think "That's about right for the size the federal government ought to be."
Because unless or until it directly impacts them, they have no idea about the work that most of the federal government does, and don't see it as valuable unless it is related to national security (and not even all of those agencies, like the Coast Guard and TSA). The GOP has been very successful in denigrating the work of and the need for good non-military government agencies while elevating defense above all else as the primary "constitutional" duty of the federal government and that everything else is unnecessary bunk that should be privatized or left to the states, if it's done at all.
This is just the latest and most extreme case of the anti-government mindset that the GOP has thrived on for decades.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to mention that noone is talking about Bernie Sanders' FB Live rebuttal speech
On Vermont Public Radio this morning the main local story was about how Bernie is pissing off dems and should probably not run. On VERMONT Public Radio--the land of Bernie Bros!

To be honest, I think that everyone--including his 2016 supporters just do not want to be reminded of 2016 and his presence will just remind everyone of 2016. I hope that he will sit this one out.
I can assure you, unfortunately, that this is NOT the case with the Bernie Bros. I am surrounded by it. People still all keep saying they want Bernie to run. **People involved in policy and government and who have an understanding in these things say he SHOULD not run. The people around here still want him to. Eyeroll.
