I just walked one block and felt like my internal organs were going to freeze from the cold air I was breathing. I have never felt temperatures like this in my life (Chicago area).
A doctor in Chicago was on NPR last night and was saying that you can get frostbite in your ear canal from being outside in temps like that for more than 10 minutes.
We had MLK day off last week. Then snow days on tues, wed, and fri. This week late start on Mon. Out Tues, Wed, Thurs.
as two working parents with demanding jobs this has been killer. We brought the boys with us yesterday to work. We will do the same on Thursday. Family and friends have helped out on other days.
I am outside PHILLY and the fucking schools were closed Monday for in-service, today for 1/2 inch if snow and a 2 hour delay for tomorrow already and I am not even in the polar vortex. So annoying.
My kids got sent home early yesterday (rain) and are on a two hour delay today for this inch. A powerful line of squalls is supposed to come through later - I’m sure that will be fun bc it’s supposed to come at dismissal! I just started a new job so it’s been extra fun juggling this!
Taking the trash cans out tonight literally hurt my teeth and made it hard to breathe and we are 15 degrees warmer than we will be at the highest tomorrow. I hate we will be going to school until June, but man, I get it. School bus stop and walking kids, no.
When do your kids normally get out of school? Our scheduled last day isn’t until June 14th.
cleo29 , I feel your pain, but I'm guessing the weather will get worse as the day goes based on what I'm seeing. I'm a lot further south than you, but I'm a big proponent of not closing so quickly.
I was pretty pissed off when schools closed for 4 days for an imaginary hurricane. And they've only made up 1.5 days of what was missed so far.
We had an early dismissal yesterday (and I had to leave work early) and then a late start today for all of 2" of snow. I'm in the Philly burbs, so I'm expecting to be closed tomorrow for the cold, but we'll see. I'm not looking forward to my walk to work tomorrow in that cold.

Are you in MD or VA? We have a teacher work day this upcoming MOnday, off the 18th for President's Day and then any other weather related days.
i grew up in Arlington, which was always the last to close it seemed. Anyway, one year they probably should have closed and when we were nearly at my bus stop our bus turned over on its side while attempting to turn the corner. i think it must have landed on snow banks or something, because no one got hurt. We had to get off the bus and walk the rest of the way.

We had a snow day Monday. The snow started two hours after it was predicted to and then it was light at first. I was worried it was going to be a dud storm and waste of a snow day. It ended up being exactly what they predicted.
Today the district is cold because the windchill is -31 and I am guessing they will be closed tomorrow too. Saturday it is suppose to be 41.
My dad lives in VA (Yorktown) and when I was young everything would shut down for a dusting of snow. My brother and I were like ‘what? You can still see the lines in the road!’ We were just bitter because our district would not consider closing our schools until we had at least a foot of snow.
I'm in the Midwest. -21 actual air temp this morning and -44 wind chill. We were out yesterday as well (I'm a teacher). Snow days last week Tues. and Wed. and one day the week before that. They haven't called yet for tomorrow, but I think everyone is just waiting to see. The wind chill warning goes until noon tomorrow. I am 50/50 if we will cancel tomorrow. (Actual air temps are supposed to be colder, I think, but no wind so the wind chill won't be as bad). I have had such a hard time getting into any semblance of a routine.
I’m also in the DC area and we have about 4 inches of snow/ice at our house. Based on Facebook comments about the school closures it seems that parts of our school district have absolutely no snow so they are really upset. I wish our school districts were smaller because there are so many times when one portion has bad roads and it’s completely dry in the rest of the county.
I grew up in Frederick and before they had a unified school district, they would do cancellations based on each individual school so the mountain schools were able to close while the valley schools stayed open. I remember when it switched to a unified district and we had so many snow days for what was basically flurries for us. But on the flip side, school were closed because it would flood near us and the kids up in the mountains had nothing.

I’m in Fairfax. I was hoping for a delay today seeing that school will likely be closed tomorrow. ::sigh:: No such luck. I pray that school is open on Friday. There’s a teacher work day on Monday.

They just called school for us tomorrow as well. Current temp is -9, feels like -33. The wind was howling last night, and the whole house was creaking and shifting all night.
I let the dog out this morning (put her sweater and coat on her, as she's half chihuahua and HATES the cold/snow), and actually set a timer as I stood there and watched her, because she tends to be SUPER picky about what spot to use. Not today. 1 minute, 16 seconds, DONE.
We are stuck in the house again. My 19 month old is miserable and bored and mean. It’s -15 wind chill out so we’re staying in. I built a pillow fort. He was mostly scared of it and accidentally knocked it over. I am too first tri tired to rebuild it so I put the couch cushions on the floor for him to play on and he likes it way better.

I hope that school is in session--I'm a librarian, and I have SO much work to do--that I can't really do from home, lol. Delay would be A-OK with me.
Since I'm home with E, I'm taking him to the movies today. We might hit Costco too. I'm near Springfield, and the roads are all clear, my car has no ice on it, I'm good to go. I saw the news, though, that the roads in the neighborhoods in the western end (Reston, Chantilly, Centreville) are a solid sheet of ice. That is not making me optimistic about tomorrow--that ice is going nowhere.
On a brighter note, it's going to be mid 60s(!!!) next week. I could actually put the top down on my convertible--that is a crazy thought!
It is so bad USPS is cancelled for tomorrow and possibly Thursday here.
I mean, when we close Wisconsin, it’s pretty bad. 😆
I'm also in Wisconsin and it was -20 (without windchill) when I got up this morning. I'm surprised USPS isn't cancelled where I am as I am near Milwaukee and I see that their mail is cancelled.
Bars are closed too. That has to be a first around here!
It is currently -27 degrees in Minneapolis. Actual temp. Windchill brings it into the -50s. I mean - we Minnesotans are a VERY sturdy stock who can handle COLD, but this is just ridiculous! And downright dangerous.
I’m in Ontario and it’s been the same. -53f with the windchill earlier in the week.. We’ve had 3 snow/cold days in the last 5 days of school and Friday is a PD day. (Early or late dismissal is not an option here, they either cancel or run at regular times.)
I feel for the high school teachers. This is exam week and 2 exam days have been called off. It is going to be rough to get those reorganized.

PA It's Catholic school and we are at the mercy of the public school district. Our particular one has always had balls of steel in the past in waiting (which is both good and bad; good in that we don;t waste days but bad in that the call usually comes at 5:15 AM). They called the delay last night though, and they have also created some nonsense of a 3-hour delay so I am thinking there was some unhappiness about their steely balls lately.

I’m in western Prince William and I’m hoping for just a delay tomorrow. Our roads are fine today even though we have a few inches of snow, but they love to cancel school so I’m expecting them to be off tomorrow. We also have the one mountain at the edge of the county that affects closures even though a tiny percentage of kids live on the mountain.
this time of year is so hard. We have 5 scheduled days off in Jan/Feb already (three 3 day weekends and one 4 day weekend) then you throw in days off for weather and the inevitable sickness that goes around and it is brutal. I really with my district would consolidate some of the days off to be consecutive. At least with a 5 day weekend maybe you could get away for a short trip.
DC/mid-Atlantic people, what temperatures usually constitute closing for cold? I'm curious about tomorrow. I'm guessing my work will stay open (since they haven't closed yet this week, except after 5pm yesterday) but my H's job seems to like to close for weather. They closed at 1pm yesterday and re-opened at 10am today, despite getting no snow accumulation at all. I wonder if he'll have a late start or cancelled day tomorrow?
As a recent transplant from the midwest, I'm slightly amused at all the hubub about weather here. At the same time, driving on crappy roads in traffic freaks me out, so I'm totally supportive of things closing if the road maintenance crews can't handle it.

I’m in central NJ and my district has never closed for temperatures (and I grew up here, so we’re going on 30+ years of knowledge). But, we’re a non busing school district, so there aren’t concerns about the safety of students waiting in the cold for buses. Hs company never ever closes for weather, however when there is anticipated bad weather (snow or too cold) they need up their core IT staff to ensure that many or most people can smoothly work from home. H won’t consider working from home tomorrow when it will be around 0 when he leaves, because he’s working from home today and Friday due to doctor’s appointments.

Interesting. I am pretty sure your school district backs up to mine and am surprised you guys didn't have off. When I got the phone call/text that they were off I look outside and nothing. I was so confused, lol.
Though, remember last year when our kids got home at like 6 pm last year? I have to imagine that was in the back of their minds.

And thank God for technology where we can all get phone calls and texts that school is cancelled/ delay. Does anyone remember having to watch the news or radio to hear your school number announced which were like 283848495055 numbers? Or were part of the telephone chain?? That was the BEST when your number was called, lol.

We've never closed for cold in all the time I have worked here. There is always the possibility of an unofficial closure though. I let everyone in my group leave at 2 yesterday with the expectation that they'd work from home. Mostly because one had to drive an hour west into the worst of it.
I was actually wondering about your second point the other day. If we get 1-3 inches of snow it is BIG NEWS for days beforehand and people freak out. Meanwhile I have friends in Iowa and Toronto who go to work in blizzards like it's NBD.

I remember listening to the clock radio in my mom's bedroom.

Yeah, people try to avoid driving there if they can help it, and often stores are busy right before a storm. But there is snow frequently enough in the midwest that you can't really avoid having to go to work in it. My second to last employer there closed a couple of times while I worked there, but it was basically a blizzard vs just a couple of inches of snow. It sucked and I was terrified driving, but realistically you can't shut down for the winter so you just kind of have to deal with it.
I have no idea why H's work had a late start today. Maybe they were thinking of commuters coming from farther north? They seem like they hate weather
I remember listening to the clock radio in my mom's bedroom.
We watched the news and it would be torturous because our city starts with a Q and they went in alphabetical order 😭
mine started with A but did not close much compared to adjoining counties. it was such a bummer. I had two times, in high school, when we were out of school for a week and that was legit. The second time i had a friend stuck with me, so that worked out well! lol
No, I am not in the upper midwest. i am in the DC area and we have maybe an inch on the ground right now. I expected delays.
I'm in northern va and the'ye blaming the "ice" and need for caution as the reason for closing school (it's frickin 25 deg.). I was out this morning running errands and no slippery spots anywhere. What I don't understand is why NOONE uses salt or really anything.
How much you want to bet they're closed tomorrow too.
