I remember listening to the clock radio in my mom's bedroom.
We watched the news and it would be torturous because our city starts with a Q and they went in alphabetical order ðŸ˜
Our news always did it by county, then by school district. I lived in a county that started with Su and went to a school district that started with Sp. That was awful!!

I was just going to say this. It was both torture, waiting to get to the end of the alphabet (my school was a W), and then the best form of joy when they finally said it. That's probably one of the best childhood feelings/memories ever from back then.
No, I am not in the upper midwest. i am in the DC area and we have maybe an inch on the ground right now. I expected delays.
I'm in northern va and the'ye blaming the "ice" and need for caution as the reason for closing school (it's frickin 25 deg.). I was out this morning running errands and no slippery spots anywhere. What I don't understand is why NOONE uses salt or really anything.
How much you want to bet they're closed tomorrow too.
They do treat the roads with something and they were in great shape today. H left for work at his normal time and said everything was fine and that was at 6:30.
I am betting they will close tomorrow, delay at the very least.
DC/mid-Atlantic people, what temperatures usually constitute closing for cold? I'm curious about tomorrow. I'm guessing my work will stay open (since they haven't closed yet this week, except after 5pm yesterday) but my H's job seems to like to close for weather. They closed at 1pm yesterday and re-opened at 10am today, despite getting no snow accumulation at all. I wonder if he'll have a late start or cancelled day tomorrow?
As a recent transplant from the midwest, I'm slightly amused at all the hubub about weather here. At the same time, driving on crappy roads in traffic freaks me out, so I'm totally supportive of things closing if the road maintenance crews can't handle it.
10 seems to be the approximate cutoff. I'm guess most of the burbs will have 2 hour delay tomorrow but DCPS will open on time again tomorrow. . .. .I understand why (breakfast in bellies), but at minimum they should make all tardies excused tomorrow.

Yes! My brother and I would start to really pay attention during the M’s, then the Ns and Os...and then Peabody...Pembroke...Plymouth... Provincetown...WHY ARE THERE SO MANY DAMN P’S!??
cleo29 , NomadicMama , notsopicky I'm honestly shocked FCPS hasn't closed for tomorrow already given what temps are expected to be even later in the morning. Just a delay would be great, but I'm not hopeful. Just too much chance of buses not starting, kids waiting at bus stops or walking in those temps, etc.
We're between Rte. 1 and GWP, and roads were absolutely fine my whole way into DC going up 1 and then 295 this morning, but it seems like our conditions are always different from western Fairfax.

We are in Springfield, and my husband said that roads were fine at 5am when he went to work—on private, county and state roads. I think the closure was a bit of overkill today. My guess is that they are waiting to make tomorrow’s call so as not to appear too soft. But by Virginia standards, tomorrow will be cold and the closure is, to me, a foregone conclusion.
I wonder if their liberal use of weather closings is gearing us up to shift the calendar again, to start earlier in August. Sure, it’s cold out, but not Arctic like in other parts of the US.

They will only do the shift if we go over our allotment and i don't think we are there yet. but, we have not hit February yet. :/

cleo29, how many snow days have we had so far this year? My memory sucks. All I know is that it feels like my kid is *always* home!! Weather forecasters did call for a snowy winter. I’m glad I finally got a long, down winter coat. I’m going to wear that coat out this year alone!!!
My kids got sent home early yesterday (rain) and are on a two hour delay today for this inch. A powerful line of squalls is supposed to come through later - I’m sure that will be fun bc it’s supposed to come at dismissal! I just started a new job so it’s been extra fun juggling this!
Interesting. I am pretty sure your school district backs up to mine and am surprised you guys didn't have off. When I got the phone call/text that they were off I look outside and nothing. I was so confused, lol.
Though, remember last year when our kids got home at like 6 pm last year? I have to imagine that was in the back of their minds.
Oh for sure!! My kids were "lucky" in that the bus got hung up and couldn't get to the school, so at least they were comfy and warm and able to move around. I'm glad the squall left before school let out. That would have been a hot mess.

I don't know, maybe 8? something like that. lol I definitely do not think we have hit the allotment for the year though.

I can't remember how many we've had so far but I just looked at the calendar and we don't have to start making up time until day #20. So we still have wiggle room!
Just waiting for the call that there's no school tomorrow - I'm in MN and my kids haven't been yet this week.
My sophomore and senior years of high school we missed a week; one was a massive blizzard and the other an ice storm (we are talking 5-6 inches of ice). it was crazy, but fun for me! (well, minus the shoveling lol)
It is so bad USPS is cancelled for tomorrow and possibly Thursday here.
I mean, when we close Wisconsin, it’s pretty bad. 😆
I'm also in Wisconsin and it was -20 (without windchill) when I got up this morning. I'm surprised USPS isn't cancelled where I am as I am near Milwaukee and I see that their mail is cancelled.
Bars are closed too. That has to be a first around here!
Im in the MKE burbs too. Our town didn’t deliver today and school for tomorrow has been cancelled since noon. We all have cabin fever!
Yes, we had this happen already this school year where it was first a delay and then changed at 11 or so to closed.
We had already dropped kids off at SACC and were all the way into work and had been there a while when they changed that day. They did that two years ago and promised then they would always make the call before SACC opened in the future 😒

NomadicMama, cleo29, others--PWC and Loudoun are closed. Somebody is saying on DCUM that there's some speculation that the powers-that-be (in FCPS) are going to change the decision to closed. I hope that's just rampant rumor, b/c at this point, they should have just closed instead of dancing around with a delay.
November 15, when it changed from a delay to a closure, they called it at 8:59(!!!). I was already driving down my very hilly snow-covered street when my son and I heard it on WTOP. I was dropping him at before care b/c H was OOT. We heard the change just as we were coming up on the one street you can turn onto to go back home--my son thought that was "lucky", lol.

I’m surprised that it’s a two hour delay at this point. It’s supposed to be 10* at 9am when middle schoolers are going to school. That’s before factoring the wind chill. That’s not safe for kids in Virginia. Many kids don’t have adequate winter gear for that kind of weather. Hopefully the powers that be will get wise before 6am and let the bus drivers stay home, too. I have been checking Twitter to see if they’ve updated it. They have to, right?!?!?
It is currently -27 degrees in Minneapolis. Actual temp. Windchill brings it into the -50s. I mean - we Minnesotans are a VERY sturdy stock who can handle COLD, but this is just ridiculous! And downright dangerous.
I’m in Ontario and it’s been the same. -53f with the windchill earlier in the week.. We’ve had 3 snow/cold days in the last 5 days of school and Friday is a PD day. (Early or late dismissal is not an option here, they either cancel or run at regular times.)
I feel for the high school teachers. This is exam week and 2 exam days have been called off. It is going to be rough to get those reorganized.
I’m also in Ontario and would love to know the night before. My kids have missed the past 4 days and tomorrow isn’t looking good either. Monday’s cancelation was a late call and only a half hour before the bus was to come.

One year we had a really late close, as i attempted to drop my kid off only to be told, once there, that school was closed. Anyway, we head over to Chuck E. Cheese and met a woman who works in the high school lunch room. She was up at 5, drove in when the roads were not great, started prepping everything and THEN was told school was cancelled. To say she was annoyed is an understatement.

I'm in NoVa too. The county school system messes things up, at least compared to where I grew up and it was smaller, closer districts. The counties are so big that oftentimes we are closed for a few back roads in the rural areas and where we are is perfectly fine. That being said, my neighborhood was a sheet of ice yesterday so I'm glad we were closed. Today it's much better, but I have a feeling we 'll be closed tomorrow as well. And it'll be in the low 60's tuesday?!?!?

Fairfax opted for another two hour delay…I’m ready for a full week of school.

Me too! And I wish they had stuck with the 2 hour delay
