We had yesterday and today off. We also have Tomorrow and Thursday off. I am a teacher, so no need to find child care, but man will Friday be rough! The windchill will be in the -60s and many businesses have closed for tomorrow
And you know they're going to close on Thursday due to temps (which is justifiable IMO).
Ah, January.
yes, i am expecting that already. I will see if the girls can hang with a friend Thursday morning rather than take them to the gym. i think we will see a movie tomorrow.
DS was sick on the 18th, then MLK day, then sick day, 2 snow days, another sick day to round out last week. Monday and Tuesday cancelled for snow (got around 6 inches). Wednesday and Thursday cancelled for the polar vortex. He will be out of school for 2 whole weeks!
I'm so thankful DH and I both telecommute. But yeah it's cold AF outside (Michigan).

yeah this time of year is rough between sick days, teacher work days and snow days. usually February is our bigger snow producer, so it will be interesting to see what happens. i know my girls don't mind.
In addition to waiting at the bus stop and adequate heating/pipes not freezing at the school, there can be concern with the buses themselves. The diesel in buses can gel up at very low temperatures. The schools around here used to have the drivers go in several hours early to start the warming process or plug in the engine to keep it warm but at frigid temperatures it's not always enough. Even if the bus can start, it can still break down on its route if a gel "clump" blocks the engine.
If you are dropping to single digit temps the buses might have been the deciding factor.

Not getting that cold tonight, but THursday is supposed to be our coldest day this week, so i am guessing we will be closed for the reasons above. Then I think a warm up or something next week. just this past weekend or the end of last week we had a day that felt like early spring. It's bananas.

I'm out in the DC exurbs and tomorrow is going to be a mess, IMO, even beyond issues of kids being outside in the temps. We have like 3 inches of snow and I saw a bunch of things on FB that people were just sliding off sloped roads/hills this afternoon. DH shoveled our driveway and I actually think that made the iciness worse as it got colder -- at least with the snow there was a little bit of friction, but with the snow scraped off all that was left was a bit of slush underneath that ended up as a sheet of ice. We're only supposed to have a high of 29 tomorrow and 23 on Thursday -- we'll be lucky if much of anything melts. And more snow coming on Friday? Eeek. I'm wondering if this whole week is going to get written off, at this point.

I think the odds are good that the week is done. I will still have to get to the gym Thursday morning and might need to cancel my OT class friday morning.

You guys can hush now. I'm near you both and I understand about Wednesday, but I didn't realize Thursday and Friday were strong possibilities for closures too. Yuck.
I never thought I’d say that we’ll “only” have wind chills of -20 to -30. I’m in Missouri, I can’t even fathom what that feels like. I am so glad I’m off of work tomorrow, and DS’s school is cancelled. We’re going to have a movie and hot chocolate day, I think, and snuggle up under sherpa blankets. Now only if the university would close so DH doesn’t have to go in.

Trash pickup was cancelled here too. USPS is off in KS & MO but not KC apparently. I hope they’ll rethink that. Our carrier’s vehicle runs so hard I know when the mail is coming bc I can hear him a block and a half away. I don’t imagine it will love a high of 5.
Our current air temp is -23, but feels like -48. This is insane. Outlet Malls are closing, malls are limiting hours, grocery stores limiting hours, museums closing.

Michigan, checking in.
It is so.effing.cold, and it's not even as cold as it's going to get yet.
School canceled for tomorrow. Our trash pick-up was just flat out canceled this week, and recycling delayed a couple days, both of which are fine with me, as it's not safe for anyone to be outside for any length of time at this point. Governor declared a state of emergency from all the snow and extreme temps that are settling in. Pretty much everything is closed. Retail stores around me posted signs saying they're closed at least on Wednesday possibly thursday too.
I expect we'll be off school Thursday as well. For the past 2 weeks, we'll have been in school 4 days total.

I am outside PHILLY and the fucking schools were closed Monday for in-service, today for 1/2 inch if snow and a 2 hour delay for tomorrow already and I am not even in the polar vortex. So annoying.

It has to be a sustained -35 here for school to be cancelled. If our buses couldn’t run in single digits we wouldn’t have school from November- March.
I’m also in the DC area and we have about 4 inches of snow/ice at our house. Based on Facebook comments about the school closures it seems that parts of our school district have absolutely no snow so they are really upset. I wish our school districts were smaller because there are so many times when one portion has bad roads and it’s completely dry in the rest of the county.
I just walked one block and felt like my internal organs were going to freeze from the cold air I was breathing. I have never felt temperatures like this in my life (Chicago area).

Taking the trash cans out tonight literally hurt my teeth and made it hard to breathe and we are 15 degrees warmer than we will be at the highest tomorrow. I hate we will be going to school until June, but man, I get it. School bus stop and walking kids, no.
