That his intentions were to show here, " look, look at this crazy shit, I only have so much power and doing what I can within those restraints." There is so much intentional secrecy in Gilead where each part doesn't know the other moving part but knowledge of all the parts are power. I also think he purposely allowed her to pick those women to help out the underground revolution, not because he is a sociopath. I just find it odd that she trusts Fred who cut his fucking wife's finger off more than Lawrence who helped people to escape.
That makes sense. Not sure I entirely buy it, but I think there’s some truth there. I just don’t think he is working *that* hard to help the resistance. It seems more passive, if anything.
I’m not sure I think she trusts Fred, so much as she knows she exhibits a certain amount of control over him because he’s a lustful pig. I think he still craves whatever fucked up relationship he was trying to have with her and that gives her a certain amount of leeway with him.
I’m really interested to see the outcome of the women she picked.
Side note: I’m kind of fascinated with his thing about lying. So far, June has been nothing but honest with him and that seems to have gained her a certain level of respect from him. On the flip side, Cora lied a couple times and now she’s gone. I’m curious what happened to her.

All very good points. I must have missed that Cora is gone. Attempted murder is okay but lying- fuck no you gone girl! Lol.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
- I thought it was interesting after the conversation here about non-Caucasian fertility when OfMatthew said she'd had four babies - How is Angela still so young looking? Should she be at least a year? June wasn't pregnant when she was born or (maybe) when she was really sick, and since then she's had Nichole, and weaned her and all that. - The scene with Emily and her wife crying over the little boy reading killed me. - Jeanine plays crazy so well - The cinematography is still so beautiful. Every episode gives me something to swoon over. The light in the pool room, the rows of people going into the church - I was afraid when I heard Chicago from the ipad that something had happened to Nick, so was so pleased to see what it actually was. - And Elizabeth Moss is amazing. I know theres all the scientology mess but damn she plays the power broker so wonderfully. LOVE HER!

You guys give Lawrence a lot more slack than I do. I get a strong misogynist vibe from him. I don't think he dislikes what Gilead has become as much as the rest of you
I think Lawrence hates the ultra-oppressive theocracy, but I agree with you that he's a misogynist. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. Characters are multi-faceted, that's part of what makes the show so compelling. Some people who help June or the Resistance have flaws, and some people within Gilead have redeeming moments. The subjugation of women might not be his biggest gripe about Gilead, but he is still the most powerful ally to the Resistance (that we know of). I look forward to seeing how his character is developed.
I am fascinated by this turn that June and Serena's relationship seems to have taken. I'm looking forward to more of that.
Emily's reunion with her wife was fucking heartbreaking. God. Those scenes kind of did me in. So much regret, pain, longing, fear, love... I hope we see them move toward a life together again.
just , the lighting and scene in the pool room was stunning.
I am terrified for Luke. What happens now? Surely they won't be able to take Nichole, right? Emily sought asylum with her. Canada wouldn't let them extradite Luke or anything like that, I hope.
I am also weirdly proud of June for how she's stepped up to do what's right, even if it means she could face backlash. She's become so courageous in the face of all of this. Somewhat directly speaking to her protecting Jeanine, but obviously lots of other moments too.
eta: Oh, and Aunt Lydia seems to have kind of gone off the deep end. What's the deal with her? She is bizarre.
I just finished episode 4. So far it's my favorite this season.
I also loved June's exchange with Luke about choosing a restaurant: Luke: "Your mom's insisting we go to a vegan restaurant" June: "Jesus, she's not even a fucking vegan."
I just finished. I am a little disappointed that we didn’t learn anything new about Lawrence or what the Resistance is up to.
I am also nervous that now Gilead knows where to find Nicole. (ETA I just watched the ep 5 sneak peek and it confirmed my fears) And teary-eyed over Emily’s family reunion.
How did they know the baby is Nichole? Neither my husband or I got that, did we miss it somehow? Are they just assuming since it’s luke?
I briefly wondered the same thing, but kind of ignored it. I mean, the handmaid in the Red Center told June they made it safely to Canada. I have to assume Gilead has people who can give them information like that too. And I'm sure they had a good idea where to look for her.

I don't doubt that they know enough to figure out that it's Luke. But I was surprised that June kept up the whole not-lying thing and admitted it was him. Also I was really mad at Luke for being so out there with baby. Yes you're in Canada but there are eyes everywhere dude, maybe don't be quite so out there with the infant that was "stolen" from a Gilead Commander??? ETA: I've also been worried that the fact that neither Luke nor Moira are parents of the baby will come back to haunt them, hence my annoyance at him being on camera protesting with Nicole.

Seriously! I couldn't believe she confirmed it was him. WTF!?!?!? Also agreed on him just taking her out and showing her off for the camera.

This is also a concern for me. I think they foreshadowed some of this when they went to talk to the priest about baptizing her. He asked a bunch of questions about how they were related and where her mom was.

I wondered the same thing about Angela. Also, I feel like Angela has looked the same age forever. I seem to recall when she was an infant she looked way too old, and as she's gotten older she still looks like a baby. I don't have kids so I could be mistaken but doesn't she look like she's around 6-8 months old now? I don't understand what they are doing with casting that baby. It's distracting.

It's definitely distracting. Like, why is she still so little!? That's definitely a miss on their part. It's really too bad because they've otherwise been pretty spot on with everything.
It's not even so much her size. There are plenty of tiny one year olds out there. What's problematic for me is that she's clearly still a baby in terms of maturity/physical ability. That kid they're casting is likely no more than 9-10 months old. The actress may be able to crawl, but not walk. A kid Angela's age would probably be close to walking, if not already doing it, depending on how old she actually is.
Just as an FYI, for those who utilize the library, Margaret Atwood's sequel to the original book is available at my library to put on hold. The Testaments gets released in the fall. Just wanted to put it out there in case anyone wants to get on the hold list early.
The timing is driving me nuts. As others mentioned, how is baby Angela still an infant? Emily's son appears to be same age he was when first separated from them at the airport. Shouldn't he be like 10 by now? Same with Hannah, she was already a preschooler when they were captured, and she's only like a year older now.
How long has it been??? I wish they would give us an idea - if the one handmaid has had 4 babies already, it has to be at least 5 years, right? If so, June and Emily's kids would be a lot older.
Isn't Emily's wife in a new relationship? She doesn't seem too eager to reignite their romantic life.

I thought Emily's son was appropriately cast. He was probably 2ish when they were separated. I'd assume he's 6-7 now? He can read pretty well though, so maybe he's older.
It does seem like it's probably been about 5 years or so. I hadn't thought about Hannah, but you're right that she should probably be a little older. It feels harder to do that with her though just due to the fact that she was an older child in the original casting. It's one thing to do it with Emily's son who was so young. It makes sense he would have changed a lot. But I feel like Hannah is more critical to the story, so maybe they wanted to stick with the same actress. Also, Gilead doesn't exactly help her to look older with all the cape and bonnet wearing.
I could not tell if Emily's wife was in a relationship. Did anyone else catch that? When she was talking about their son being dropped off, I thought maybe she said something about another person, but I rewound it and still couldn't quite tell what she was saying. There doesn't seem to be anyone else in the house though. Keep in mind though, they basically removed Emily's clitoris, so she's probably got enough disfunction going on that sex wouldn't necessarily be top of her mind. I think there are also probably a ton of conflicting emotions. Surely she's angry (not at her wife, but just in general), scared, and just struggling to get herself back into a normal world. She may also have a lot of emotion around the fact that she was repeatedly raped and physically scarred. Plenty of women struggle with romantic relationships after events like that. There are a lot of emotions going on, so I can understand why there would be some awkwardness. It did seem to me that the final scene with them on the porch might be a good turning point for them. Just being near one another and doing something "normal."
This was definitely my favorite episode this season so far. It was so well done, from the acting to the cinematography and all of the emotions. The pool scene between June and Serena was perfect.
I don’t think Emily’s wife was in a new relationship but it also wasn’t clear. I hope they are able to move forward.
I hope Luke and Nichole are safe in Canada but I’m sure they will send people from Gilead to try to get her.

This is one I'm definitely going to buy.
I checked and it's available for pre-order from Amazon. $19 for the hardcover.
I don't think June could have gotten away with lying about knowing Luke. Gilead already knows about her marriage. I figured it was a test for her, not a real confirmation if his identity.
Emily's story is killing me. So many tears! I hope she can find happiness. I just can't imagine what it's like to work through that much trauma. I'm guessing she's terrified to ask if her wife found someone else. They are both also probably suffering some survivor's guilt, the wife because she got away and left Emily behind, and Emily because she got away and left June and others behind, even though rationally they knew it was the right thing to do in both cases. It would take a while to rebuild from all of that.

I don't think her wife is in a new relationship. The person she was talking about was Oliver's teacher.
