I need to really put some thought into routines/schedule because things are chaos with a 2.5 month old, kindergartner and preschooler. DH and I have made a list of what needs to be done when but things still seem more stressful than they need to be so I think we’re missing something.
I have a big paper calendar out on the kitchen counter so everyone knows which kid needs to be where and when. My list of things to do is right next to it.
Susie forgetting something is my fear. I bet your son enjoyed being nursed, but that’s a lot to add onto your day. How’s his PT going?
Target is having a sale on the spectra pumps. I have an S2, wondering if I should get an S1 or an S9. How often would I need a portable pump?
I was actually pleasantly surprised yesterday, his PT session showed an 10-15 degree improvement in range of motion over the previous week. So while he was an angry nightmare all week about doing his exercises, he does seem to be progressing, and his PT is relatively happy with it. That is a relief. It's still hard to get done, but at least it feels worth it.
As far as a portable pump, I really like having one, but haven't done anything yet where I feel like I "need" it. I keep it plugged in on my nightstand, and then I can carry it around the house unplugged to pump at my desk, or at the table, or while brushing my teeth. Mobility in any of those situations could be sacrificed, but it really helps me multitask, which has been a big help with 2 kids. The absolute lack of free minutes in my day is the hardest part about 2 kids for me.
I don't travel a ton for work, but when I do it will also be super helpful then. I had some rough travel experiences when I was pumping for DD, trying to find places to pump that had outlets, and juggling that stupid Medela AA batter adapter when I couldn't -- places like airports, conferences, etc. Having a built in battery feels like such an amazing luxury! I am spoiled to have two S1s, one got through insurance ($80 up charge vs. the S2) and the other a friend passed on to me, but they are great. The one thing I don't really do is pump in the car though, so I can't speak to that.

[ I’m glad the PT is working!
I don’t know why I didn’t pay the difference for the s1, I just didn’t even think of it. I see a bunch for sale on the second hand sites, so not too bad. Just debating whether to get an s1 or an S9. Mushe did you ever get the S9? I see you had a three about it in April?

I got my S2 through insurance and then decided to get the S1 on Amazon (I think I got it for $199). I LOVE having the portable version for being at home - I still usually sit in one place and pump, but if I need to get up and move around for some reason (to let the dogs out, to comfort DD if she starts to fuss during tummy/playmat time), it’s really nice to not have to pause my pumping session.
When I go back to work, I’m going to keep the S2 in my office and keep using the S1 at home, so I don’t have to haul a pump back and forth. I’ll also use the S1 for any work travel I need to do.
This is basically what I did with DS1. I didn’t ever NEED the S1 but it was nice to sit on my bed or let the dog out. I’ll do the same this time and keep the S1 at home. I have 2 S2s now and 1 will go to work. Maybe I’ll keep the old S2 in the nursery or something.

Well shit. I just saw the S9+ is $162.90. That plus freemie cups would be doable for me to pump and work while caring for patients. Except I'm putting in my notice like tomorrow or early next week to SAH.
Ugh, I’m sorry icedcoffee. I think things turned a corner re: nipple pain around day 10-14 for me. Hang in there.
I always nurse, mostly because is the fastest/easiest way to get her back to sleep, and ideally resets the clock. This is probably the wrong answer, but lazy lol.
With your pain, I’d probably try to rock for any wake ups around 1.5 hours or less.
I’m always inclined to nurse too because of the “resetting the clock” idea. By the time you rock them if it fails it’s time to nurse again anyway. Last night he was up hourly though. . My poor nipples!
My pedi prescribed APNO nipple cream yesterday. Hoping we can get that today and maybe it will help. He has such a strong latch. Every pedi he’s seen so far who has stuck their finger in his mouth comments on it.
APNO saved breastfeeding for me with both kids. There is no way I would have made it without it.

Same. I’m not sure why it’s not prescribed as a matter of course.

Tritto. Between DD1 and DD2, my hospital started compounding it on site so they gave me a small jar in the hospital. That was *awesome*. I remember driving so far on a weekend with DD1 to find a compounding pharmacy that was open to get it.
icedcoffee, I hope the APNO helps! Hang in there, it definitely got better for me too around the 2 week mark. (Still hurt a bit, but a lot less and nothing like the first week)
What does APNO do? How is it different from regular nipple cream? I'm 7.5 months in and still regularly having a significant amount of nipple pain. The LC was never able to figure out anything that might be causing it to happen, so I gave up and resigned myself to being in pain until I finish BFing. Would it be worth going back at this point and asking for APNO to try?

I hope I have the same success. H walked in with it a few hours ago. The pedi initially referred us to an independent pharmacy and they wanted $93 for it. I walked out sad and defeated. H insisted we check CVS and they were able to compound it for me for $7!!
I also don’t understand why it’s not standard. The hospital gave me lanolin which does jack shit.
My 5 month old has been chomping on my nipples for a weeks now. He will be nursing and then just put my nipple between his gums, chomp down and twist or pull and it is so painful. I pull him off and say “no” but he just smiles. I mean I know a 5 month th old doesn’t know what “no” is but is there anything else I can do? It hurts!

It’s a mix of an antibiotic, antifungal and antiinflamattory. I’ve never used it until today but people say it heals their nipples in only a couple days. Maybe worth a try? My pedi prescribed it but an OB can also do it. I can update in a few days!

I used to end the session with DS when he did that.

Mine is doing that as well, and he has 2 teeth. Urgh.
I unlatch (usually while gasping from the pain), say no biting, put him down for like 30 seconds. Then resume the nursing session. If he does it again, the nursing session is over.

What icedcoffee said. My OB prescribed it to me at my 6 week checkup when I had the giant bleb. I used it off and on for 3 months until the bleb finally popped completely.

I think the anti inflammatory made the immediate difference for me, and the others helped me heal.
I could rant all day about how NOBODY offered this to me in the hospital. I was in tears holding my breath while feeding her, and not a single nurse or lactation consultant or my OBGYN told me it existed. My daughters pedi (they do rounds) talked to me and was IMMEDIATELY like you need to make them prescribe this for you. He was pissed

I can commiserate. Mine smiles too.
Yesss, and then I’m like “aw, you’re cute!” And then he does it again.

With both pregnancies my kids pedi has cared more about my health and my mental health than my OB and anyone at the hospital. It’s crazy. I love my pedi office.

melmaria, that seems great! Do whatever you need to do for your mental health. E1 got a bottle before bed for a LONG time, so I've been in the same boat!
DS had been working towards a longer stretch of sleep at night—-except the past few nights he’s decided to wake up even earlier than before. I can’t really complain since it’s still a ~5 hour stretch, but it had been more like 6 working on 6.5.
I got the first “maybe you could take him back to the hospital” from DD the other night, which was a little surprising given how much she loves on him. She insists on kissing him and giving him a hug before she leaves for daycare or goes up to bed. Sitting with both of them on the couch the other day and my heart felt so full.
DS has started smiling more often and it’s the cutest darn thing. He has also discovered that he has hands. The continued light spitting up however is not cute.
I got approval today to work from home 2x a week once I go back to work (late September). I'm SO HAPPY. It will make my life so much easier to have 2 days where I don't have to look presentable or commute, and I can stay on top of laundry and other house crap. Or, you know, nap during lunch.

So jealous! I wish my company wasn’t stuck in the 80s on this issue.

I'm kind of shocked. I proposed it verbally at a review last year and was immediately shut down. This time I put together a formal written proposal and sent it directly to HR and it was approved. I was actually just looking for 1 day a week and figured I'd ask for 2 and compromise with 1, but huzzah!
Honestly my department is understaffed and I'm guessing they were worried I might not come back from leave if they denied. Little do they know my husband is a teacher who makes pennies and I'd have no choice lol.

My 4-month-old is starting to do this. DD didn't start biting until older - 7 months maybe? - I think, even though she got teeth really early. With her I would just finish the session, put her down on the floor and not look at her for like a minute or so. She got over it really fast. I don't know if that will work with him though, he's so much younger. I have been ending the nursing session once he does it, but he gets really upset. The crappy part is now when he nurses I have my finger hovering right by his mouth ready to break the latch as soon as he clamps, and neither of us like that really.
He loves to grab my boob, push it back so my nipple starts elongating and pulling out of his mouth, and then he clamps down. It hurts so bad.

My DD also did this but was much older, like 8 months or so. With her I could also stop the nursing session and say no and she would get upset and put two and two together. But my DS just smiles and does it again, stinker.
