Yeah, I might not recommend parking on that street anymore, lol. Though the rational part of me still believes it isn't an unsafe place. I think we just got really unlucky with the wrong kids in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Yes, I think it was bad luck and timing . It is an odd little block without a lot of traffic so they might have felt emboldened if they didn’t see anyone around and just went for it. I’m so glad you only lost your wallet and phone.
Well, and my car! But I hope it turns up. At least it was a cheapo tiny purse I had bought on Amazon for like $15 so no big loss on the purse.
How scary for you and your friend! I hope you end up getting your car back in good shape.
Do you have comprehensive on your car? It's possible that your belongings will be covered under "vandalism", it's also possible your home/renter's policy will cover them. It's a messy area that varies by state.
Ohhh this is such a good point! I will ask, thank you! I didn't even consider that it might be covered by car insurance. I am going to cross my fingers hard that it will be.
I do have comp, and thankfully only have a $50 deductible! A stolen car should be covered under comprehensive so that's good news, at least.

I will cross everything, too! Dig into your state law an your policy!
Thanks, everyone. What a crazy thing to happen! It still seems unreal.
They didn't find the car last night, and H and I actually drove around for a bit today to see if we could spot it. We didn't. My phone tracks a location less than a mile away, so they really didn't go far. But who knows what happened after that. I think the phone battery is dead now so that's the end of the tracking. I'm more hopeful my car will turn up than my phone.
Has anyone replaced a phone without insurance before? I still owe like $600 on this one so I have no idea how it works. I love my phone and I'm going to be so pissed if I end up with a crappier one because it costs a ton to replace.
So sorry you have to deal with all of this. Generally, the cars are stolen in one area and driven to another. They're not usually taken for joy riding and the police will probably find it in a couple of weeks wrecked somewhere, or used in connection with another crime.

See, that's actually kind of the opposite of what the cops said. They said usually when it's a group of teens (around here) they just drive it around and then ditch it somewhere. I guess I am not surprised it's not where my phone (supposedly) is/was but it sounded like there was a good chance. Who knows where it went now. We only had 1/4 of a tank of gas so hopefully they can't get too far!
I live in Baltimore, which I swear is a lovely, wonderful city. But there are a lot of teenagers here without a lot of good stuff happening in their lives and they get bored and cause trouble just for something to do (which is an oversimplification, I guess). I'm about 99% sure that was the case here. The whole thing makes me really sad and angry, both at the kids and at the reasons why they were doing stuff like this in the first place.
Thanks, everyone. What a crazy thing to happen! It still seems unreal.

By any chance, do you have renter’s insurance? Depending on your deductible, it would probably be cheaper to file a contents claim for all your belongings including the phone as opposed to getting a replacement from the carrier. This would be a covered claim since it was a theft.

Oh yes, the car! I was thinking of uninsurable things. The car might be recovered if it’s just left on a street somewhere. I’ve called in cars that were left parked for days that turned out to be stolen a quite a few times of the years. Lots of joyriding.

I know a 2010 Jeep Patriot would be my first choice if I wanted to go on a joyride! Lol. I bet they are sad they missed out on the 2003 Buick. I wrongly assumed that our older cars made us less likely to be a target. I guess it doesn't matter when it's a crime of opportunity.
But yeah that's what I hear too. I'm hopeful it will end up like that!

I do! Unfortunately I think my deductible for that is around 1k, though, so it may not be useful. Other than the car, I don't think our losses amount to more than 1k. The only thing of actual value that was lost was my phone. Thank goodness, my friend had her phone in her pocket so they didn't take it!
The irony here is that I actually didn't need to be driving at all. My friend had taken the bus to meet me, and I was worried about her taking the bus home because I didn't think it was safe to stand and wait for the bus alone (or for me to wait with her and then walk home alone). I figured walking to our apartment together and then driving her home was safer. Turns out her odds were probably better with taking the bus. Our garage is on the back of the building, so had I just walked home I would have entered in the front and never encountered these guys.
So trying to be safe ended up screwing us. Go figure. There is no lesson in that, of course. We just got unlucky.
I’m so sorry. That is so scary! I’m glad you’re okay.
My car was stolen a few years ago. I wasn’t in it, thankfully, but it was also by a group of teenagers. They ended up getting involved in a high speed chase with the police after they wouldn’t pull over for speeding on the interstate. They ended up wrecking and totaling the car. Good times. They were just taking the car out joyriding the whole time. There were a bunch of McDonalds receipts in the car.
So a few things - have you reported all of this to your insurance company yet? If not, do so ASAP so you’re not responsible for what happens to it as of now. My car was missing for a few days before it was wrecked. Insurance originally told me that if it wasn’t found after XX days then they would reimburse me for the value of the car, and if the car was ever found after that then they would own it. They also reimbursed me for everything that was in the car that was stolen, so I would check with your insurance about all of that too. Insurance and the police told me to pray the car either got totaled or was never found, because people destroy the insides of cars once they’re stolen. Mine had cigarette holes all over the seats and it smelled disgusting when I went and saw it in the junk yard

Ugh that's my fear about the interior of the car. My poor Jeep. We've been through a lot, including 3 minor accidents before this. It's been a good car. None of this was even our fault!
I'm glad to hear someone else say the stuff in the car will be reimbursed. I wish our claims person would speak to me before Monday. We are fairly lucky that I don't think there was anything else of value in the car, but my damned phone. I held off buying one for a while and finally sprung for one in March, and I loved it. I really hope it can be replaced with the same model. It makes me sick to think of having to pay $600 to even start over on a new contract.
I'm sorry that happened to you and your car, too. How stressful and awful to have that happen!
I’m so so sorry! That must have been terrifying. I’m not saying anything new, but you absolutely made the right call not resisting. A car is not worth the risk. I hope they find it soon.
You did the right thing! I'm so sorry that happened to you, how scary. I'm sorry you're (understandably) shaken up. It's so hard when your sense of safety is violated so close to home. I'm glad you weren't physically harmed.

Wow that is so scary. Good for you for giving the car.
Can I ask where you live in Baltimore? General area? My bro lives there but has had a lot of health problems so I’ve spent time at his apartment (right by lyric) and unfortunately shock trauma. At his apt I usually just go into the garage which is also off in the back on a side street

Sure - I live downtown, actually within a couple of blocks of shock trauma. I live right down the street from Camden Yards.
Honestly I am not super familiar with the area where your brother lives, but my impression is that it's probably around the same safety level as where I live. So it's not super likely that something will happen, but probably more likely than somewhere like Mount Vernon (the neighborhood between where I live and where your brother lives).
I don't know that this should scare you, but definitely pay attention to your surroundings and try to avoid going in and out late at night if you can. I think I'm going to try to avoid doing much driving late at night in the future, honestly. Not that it was super late - around 10:15 - but late enough that there weren't many people around. In hindsight of course I'm thinking I should have been more vigilant, but I honestly don't know how I could have seen these guys coming. Locking doors likely would have made a difference though.

Don’t blame yourself. You did NOTHING wrong.
When my bro was first at shock trauma we stayed in the Hampton inn right by Camden yard. Maybe same area

Yep. We had a work vehicle stolen a couple years ago. When they did eventually find it the outside was fine, but the inside made it a total loss. My coworker who handles the vehicle fleet said it was absolutely disgusting inside and smelled horrendous.
