I was going to give my friend a ride home after we saw a play together tonight, and we were backing out of my building's garage and a group of kids/young men (probably 16-20 years old) surrounded my car. I stupidly hadn't even locked the doors yet so they opened the doors and told us to get out and to give them everything. They took my purse, which thankfully only had 1 credit card and my ID, plus my cell phone. And then they drove away with my car.
Neither of us were hurt but it was pretty freaking scary. I don't think any of them had a weapon, but there were at least 6 of them and it was really intimidating. In hindsight IDK if we should have resisted more if they didn't have weapons, but I lean toward "no" since there were at least 3x as many of them as there were of us.
The police were actually really wonderful and I was able to use the "timeline" feature on my Google phone to track a location that they were within the last couple of hours. The police are checking out the area right now, so hopefully they will find the car. If not, IDK what will happen.
I'm upset about the loss of property, but also about my loss of security here. I know I don't live in the safest area but it's also not the worst. I drive in and out of that garage daily and have never felt unsafe before. Now I'm not sure how I'm going to go places after dark without feeling worried. I love living here and I don't want that to change. But also at the moment I really want to move.
I am so sorry. That is so scary and violating but I am glad you are okay. You did the right thing by not resisting. I hope they find your car. Assholes!!!

I'm so sorry. I hope the police will be able to help you. I understand being scared. I think reminding yourself that this is probably a one-off (you haven't felt scared before this really, right?), that fear is normal and that the police will probably up their presence where you are due to this, may help. Hugs!

Hugs to you. I’m so glad you and your friend are safe. The mental part of this is the hardest. I hope you can feel safe again in your area, but I think wanting to move is s normal and understandable reaction.
You did the right thing. There was a horrible car jacking at one of the nicest malls in my state. He was with his wife and he resisted and paid with his life. It is just not worth it. I hope they find your car and they catch those thieves.

Oh wildrice I am so sorry this happened to you. I hope you’re able to regain confidence in your neighbourhood. You 100% did the right thing letting the car go.
Oh no! Glad you and your friend are ok! Is this the car you just got from your grandma?? ☹️
No, it was our other car! I'm actually really glad it wasn't her car, because she was so happy to give it to us and it would have been really disappointing to have to tell her it was gone.

No, I haven't felt scared. It's definitely not an area where you want to walk alone after dark or walk around flashing your phone/money, but generally the worst I see is a lot of loitering/drug use and nothing actually criminal. I've especially never felt unsafe in my car. I'm kicking myself that I didn't lock the doors before backing out. They lock automatically once you start driving forward so I've never really paid attention to that.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. That would be terrifying. You absolutely did the right thing just letting the car go. I think it's totally normal to feel a loss of sense of security and to be fearful right now. I know I would be.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham
We have a problem with teens breaking into cars at night. Usually unlocked cars. My car was broken into a few years ago in my driveway (stupidly left it unlocked) and seeing my car the next morning with stuff thrown about and the glove compartment and console open and messed up really made me feel so violated. I cannot even imagine the violation you must be feeling.
That’s awful I’m so sorry. But you shouldn’t second guess anything you did. They did all the wrong things, not you. And you are are safe which is priority 1, so you should be proud of your actions.
