It’s finally time to replace our sad old mattress. For years H and I talked about upgrading to a king once we bought a house.
Well, we bought a house with a small master bedroom so now we are reconsidering. There would still be enough room to maneuver around but it would make the room feel smaller and cramped.
So is a king bed worth it or should we stick with a queen?
Once we switched from queen to king a few years ago, there will be no going back for us. I don’t care if our next bedroom is so small that the bed takes up every inch lol. It has made such a difference in our comfort level!
We have a small master with a king bed. It doesn’t bother me. We sleep in our bedroom. That’s what it’s for. We bought our king when we had a similarly small master.
I really love our king though. We’re not touchy sleepers, so the fact that I can sleep and not be near DH is perfect.
I don’t know if our master is small or not. We have a king with a side table on each side and enough clearance at the foot of the bed for one person to walk through and a narrow table. It’s not big but I have never felt cramped in the room.
We recently upgraded to a king because we moved into a bigger house with a big master bedroom. It fills the space better than a queen would but I kind of miss the coziness of a queen. We used to automatically cuddle and now we have to make a concerted effort because of the space between us. And instead of a three cat pile-up like we used to have only one cat sleeps with us now. My H says that he likes being able to spread out without bumping into me.

I love our king and I think it’s worth it. However, I do not like to be touched when I want to sleep. Our master is huge so it accommodates the size well.
I don’t know that I would get one if our master was small.

We have a queen, and it is plenty big. We tend to fall asleep together in the middle, then move to our respective sides as the night goes on for no more touching. I think that unless there is a real sleep issue going on - need for more space, less motion in the mattress, etc. - I would stick with a queen. I don’t want a bedroom to feel cramped because that ruins some of the relaxation/peace I like to feel.
We could fit a king without it being too crowded in our room, but we've found that what really makes us more comfortable is separate duvets. Even when we're in a king bed in a hotel room, blanket sharing is an issue, lol. We have a queen bed and two twin-size duvets (we fold them in half lengthwise on our respective sides, with just a fitted sheet under and a lightweight quilt over them when we make the bed).

It’s a comfort issue for me. H takes up more than his share of space (due to the way he sleeps and moves, not body size) and I am so tired of sleeping on the edge of the bed. I think it would help with motion transfer and since H is a hot sleeper, I’m hoping that more space between us would help him sleep a little cooler.
I think it depends on whether you need the room to sleep. Even if it might seem big in the room, I think good sleep is worth it.
We have a queen, but DH is a cuddler so I put up with it. I've mentioned a king b/c we have a large enough master, but he hasn't bought in. We would also have to figure out out blanket situation b/c we use a king comforter on our queen.
I'm not sure what you consider to be a small master bedroom. Ours is like 10x10 or maybe 12x12, I'm not sure, and I consider that to be small. We do not currently have a king, but 100% plan on upgrading when the time comes. That will mean that our bed will take up one entire corner of the room and we'll no longer have room for nightstands. I am totally fine with that. H and I are not small, plus we have 2 large dogs that sleep in bed with us. I look forward to the day when I have more than 6 sq ft to sleep in.
@sameoldstory I think ours is about 14x10, so not tiny, but because of the placement of the doors there’s only about 10’ of useable space on the wall where the bed has to go.
We just had this same discussion. We will definitely be getting a King for our next bed. If you have a Queen in there already, it will add about 6 inches to each side (plus whatever frame you choose). If you can still walk around the room comfortably, I’d go for it.
We have happily been in a Queen, but our DS ends up in bed with us more nights than not. I don’t see this ending anytime soon. We need a King and will get it when we upgrade.
Upgrading to a king was one of the best decisions I've ever made. As long as it fit, I'd do it. I don't need room in my master for anything else. I get dressed and stuff in the bathroom since the closet is in there.
ETA: If you do upgrade just get a smaller profile bed. Definitely do not get a foot board or a 4 poster bed. I hate when people do that in a small room.
Our King is almost too much space for us. Although it was a pain to get sheets for, I really liked our Olympic Queen—it’s wider than a regular Queen, but not as wide as a King.
I've lived in a tiny condo for years - had a king size bed and two nightstands in my room and that's it. Barely enough room to walk around the bed. And there's no way I'd swap my King bed for a queen.
