This is going to date me but the very first thing that popped into my head when I saw J Lo was Cher in If I Could Turn Back Time. I remember there being a lot of drama about the scandalous outfit Cher wore in the video and how she was "too old" to be wearing such a thing. I think she was only in her 40s so...maybe there's progress there?
Anyway the whole thing is just a joke. I am reminded daily about how much the conservative movement in the country sucks and just how hypocritical they all are. It's laughable.
I remember when I was a kid learning that Elvis was controversial in his day because it was considered scandalous for him to shake his hips on national TV. I was dumbfounded. This feels like the modern day version of that and I am still dumbfounded.

My biggest annoyance I keep seeing is the reference "stripper pole" which it is not unless it is IN A STRIP CLUB. I have a professional pole in my living room and guess what? That workout is hard, kicks my ass, and.. I'm not a stripper. (Not that I, personally, have any problem with exotic dancers.) I've danced with girls who are internationally known for pole and they are some of the strongest and best athletes I've ever met. I need to watch the full thing instead of clips, but I'm pretty sure I won't be offended.

I just re-watched it and I ended up tearing up during "Let's Get Loud/Born in the USA" part. All those kids with bedazzled flag hoodies singing "let's get loud" was beautiful.
I hope that is not lost on many of you while you discuss this in your mom groups or whatever.

Oh, it's lost. Even in this thread there were rumblings of, "let's not make this a race thing." Crotch grabbing children in cages?
I just watched it and loved it so much!! I don't understand the complaints at all. I saw two woman go up on the stage, defy gender and age biases, and entertain the hell out of everyone. It was amazing.
I turn 43 in 18 months. Shakira has just given me life goals! If I can half that confidence at 43 I'd be thrilled. Man she killed it. I forgot how much I love her.
Also, they were both wearing more clothes than Adam Levine did last year and no one complained about that.
This is exactly what I thought too.
Also, I just ordered the hair products her stylist used. I don't have a car for my extensions (nor do I have extensions for that matter) but maybe the hairspray will help breathe some life into my hair when it's a frizzled mess.
Yes, and from what I see it is more her putting her hand there rather than actually grabbing. Sort of like when you are not sure where to put your hand when you are standing. IMO, it wasn’t an actual grab.
Note: I realize it is all choreographed and so all the movements were deliberate.
gummybear, I remember the Cher controversy because of that video.
Why are we spending so much time talking about JLo’s crotch and not about the message she was trying to deliver about how we’ve treated asylum seekers in this country? Or Puerto Rican pride (“Born in the USA?”)
So American. More horrified by sexual innuendo than human rights violations.
ETA: We could also be talking about the historic moment of having two Latina headliners for the Super Bowl, one of the most “American” events of the year. And in Miami! (Glad to see the Super Bowl half time committee learn from the Atlanta/Maroon 5 misstep.)
Seriously. My favorite aspect of the costume was the double sided feather flag. Get it, JLo.
Not gonna lie, I was like "fuck yeah!" when she spread her arms to show that the cape was the PR flag.

I watched it with my husband and three daughters (12/11/8) and we were all in awe. Loved all of it and wouldn't hesitate to let the kids watch it all over again.
I don't love crotch-grabs but when women do it (Halsey is an example of more definitely-intentional grabbing than JLo, for sure), it seems more like an intentional statement, like when women first started wearing tuxes on the red carpet, a challenge to the double-standard/gender expectations.
This was definitely the best show I've seen in a long time. Such diversity in the dance styles and so much energy through it all. I wish they would do a whole show and put it on Netflix, because my only real criticism is that it was too.. cramped? They shoved so much into a short period that it was easy to miss things that deserved the chance to shine.
I also loved Shakira's footwear choices. She was like "I am here to stomp shit out and I have no time for heels." Likewise the amount of shit JLo pulled off IN heels is just mindboggling.

I'm with you on this! They looked like they both were having a great time and absolutely rocked it! I forgot how much I love Shakira and J Lo's older songs - may need to do a full Zumba class with them, ha ha :-)
And yes, I've always wanted to be Shakira :-P She's amazing!
LOL forever and a damn day to anyone concerned with the show not being family friendly. By watching the game in the first place, you’re supporting an institution that gives no fucks about family. Focus your energy on explaining to your kids why there are men who abuse their wives, girlfriends and kids being glorified and idolized on the biggest TV stage in the world just because they can catch a ball. I’m sure once you’ve had that conversation, all the uncomfortable nine year olds will go clutch their pearls over a real problem.

I saw Cher in concert last year, and she wore a similar outfit when she performed If I Could Turn Back time on stage. She's in her 70s and looked AMAZING in it.

isabel, mofongo @othershakirafans Her EL Dorado World tour concert film premiered last month on HBO, if you get that channel. I actually watched it the night before the Super Bowl and it shows how much work she puts in and how involved she is with every aspect of the show. I am hoping to be able to see her next times she tours.
I just came in to see why Virtue & Moir's pic was featured for this post. Coincidentally, they actually did have an infamous crotch-in-face lift in their repertoire lol.
The music and messaging of the halftime show was awesome. My 5yo loved "the dancing and sparkles" as she referred to it.
I have watched like 5 times now. My takeaway is shakira outperformed JLo in every way! She sounded better, danced better and overall looked like she was having more fun. I have become re-obsessed with her. No offense to JLo, she did great but, to me, shakira was just that much better.
I have a newfound crush on her after this show and also watching a 60 Minutes segment with her that really focused on her charitable work.

I'm just wondering if this is an age graded opinion? 😉
Isnt shakira either 40 or early 40's while JLo is 50!

I rewatched and I agree. They are both great performers, but Shakira was much better all around. If anyone wants to be offended about something, it should be Jenny’s voice. I said it and I won’t take it back lol.

I just went to Youtube and watched it because of this thread--I don't watch the Super Bowl.
It was great, I loved it! I mean, it isn't my kind of music but the dancing and the performances were amazing. J. Lo's daughter was impressive.
It all moved so fast for me that I didn't get that those white things were supposed to be cages with kids in them. I also didn't catch the flag stuff. I'm going to rewatch it. I love it even more now after reading that she referenced those things.
