My daughter takes gymnastics classes on Monday evenings. We pay every 4 weeks for the next 4 weeks. I paid on March 2 for classes on March 2,9,16, and 23. My daughter was sick on March 9 and the 16th and 23rd were canceled due to the virus. The gym sent an email to everyone that when they reopened everyone would make up 2 classes and we wouldn’t be billed again until they reopened. I responded asking if I could be refunded for 3 classes instead since my daughter had been sick and that way they wouldn’t have to worry about getting her in for a makeup when everyone is having to do make ups. They responded that they wouldn’t issue me a refund and that we would have to make up classes over the summer. The problem is the summer session only has 2 classes for the level my daughter is at and the other one is at a time that we can’t go. I explained this and now am waiting to hear from them. I thought about filing a dispute with my credit card company for services that were paid for but not received but my daughter loves gymnastics and I don’t want to do anything that would risk her getting kicked out. I know as a business they are hurting which is why they said they aren’t doing refunds but like many others we had to take a pay cut and I can’t pay for services that I didn’t receive.
Update: The director said if we need we could make up classes in the fall. I’m satisfied with that because they have many more class options during the school year.
Do they have a policy for classes missed due to illness? I feel like that one is on you, and would not expect to receive any money back. As for the refund vs a credit, I’d push that one. You may have to wait a bit, as I’m sure they’re trying to hold on to as much cash as possible to keep things afloat.

I wouldn't expect a refund for missing a class due to illness. I feel like most places like that have a policy that they don't give refunds for missed classes. The skate club, swim lessons, and karate studio where my son takes lessons all have that policy.
No, they are offering make up classes... just because you can’t make one of the times is on you, basically. How much can one class cost to go through the trouble of disputing a charge and ruining your relationship with this place?
I would not push for a refund. Honestly I’ve never had a lesson in a scenario like that that allowed make-ups for illness — or for any matter really other than like national holiday. I mean, how much do you pay for 4 lessons? Even assuming one lesson is like $30-40, is it worth the time and energy to fight for it back? They are giving you options to reschedule in the summer, it’s not their fault that it doesn’t work for you.

Yes. They have allowed makeups for missed classes in the past due to illnesses. They don’t allow makeup’s for other reasons.
So you said that there are 2 classes at your daughter's level, but one you can't make the time...for either? It says for one so I'm confused. Can they hold your credit over until next fall? Do they have a camp or other class they could apply that to that she might be interested in? I get not wanting to throw good money after bad, but how much are we actually talking about here?

I feel like it would be on me if they offered more options for make ups. Like I stated there are only 2 classes for her level. She is already signed up for one of them. The other one we can’t go to.

During the summer there are only 2 classes for her level. One is on Monday’s which she is signed up for. The other class is on tuesdays. It would be Tuesday’s that she would have to make up her 3 missed classes and we can’t. She and her brother both have swimming tuesdays.

So she's signed up for Mondays in summer. Can you not apply the make-up class to that? Or have you already paid? I'm sorry, I"m tired. So I must just not be getting it.
So regardless my discussion with them would be: "Listen, I don't want to make you issue me a refund right now when you're trying to pay your rents with no income. How else can we work this out with you? Our circumstances have also changed because of this situation and our finances are tight right now."
And I can pretty much guarantee that if you dispute your credit card charges without giving it a few solid tries to work something else out that it will absolutely maybe not risk getting her kicked out, but definitely will make you persona non grata with gym management. And gyms are freaking gossipy. So please don't do that.

I would ask if they can just credit you two classes toward the summer or fall. I would not ask for the 3rd, since she was sick. I honestly wouldn’t push a refund right now. Since she likes it there i would just be hoping and praying they can stay afloat during the closure. So many small businesses are not going to make it though this.
I would not push it. Everyone is just trying to do their best right now, especially small businesses. I would let it go. I’m my kids have missed like 4 dance classes in January and March due to snow that are now not going to be made up. These are unprecedented times and I’m not going to worry about them.

Isn't that what they're offering you? It sounds like their policy is makeup classes and you want something different. I would handle this by taking the makeup classes or letting it go. I would not email them, and I would definitely not go to my credit card company.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I’ve never once seen things like this give refunds. It’s generally spelled out in the contract. Some generously allow a makeup class, others you’ve simply missed it. I’d let it go personally.
I wouldn’t expect or ask for a refund for a class missed for illness. My daughters’ team allows you to to go a different level’s practice but sometimes I don’t bother. They let us make up 4 classes a session. But they are there twice a week so it’s a lot anyways.
I am impressed you are getting refunds for the canceled classes at least...we’ll miss 8 or 9 dance classes at this point, plus the recital and 2 costumes ...I don’t foresee us getting a refund. They aren’t even doing zoom classes.
I wouldn’t push it for what is effectively one class. I don’t think my kids gym will survive this so while they have also promised make ups and clinics to cover what we’ve already paid I have a feeling they will be out of business before anyone sets foot in the kids gym again. That foam pit made me cringe before and now....

Yes. They have offered makeups before. They have also offered refunds before. They have different policies for summer classes and classes during the school year. I can never remember what the current policies are.

This literally would never cross my mind as something to get a refund for. I mean isn’t part of having kids missing stuff you paid for because of sickness and other issues?
If my kid is sick and we can't make the make-up option due to our choices, I consider that to be on me and let it go. So, I would handle this by doing nothing.

I don't think you should be refunded for a missed class due to sickness. If you have a conflict with the possible makeup dates, that's unfortunate but on you, not them. Reporting it to your credit card company very well may burn a bridge, so I'd weigh the risk of that with the potential benefit of recouping the cost of one class.
I would absolutely drop it and forget getting money back. AT our gymnastics place, you are offered one make-up. Doesn't matter how many days you miss, you have one make-up. They offer a couple different dates, and if you can't make it, you are out of luck. I think what they are doing for you sounds entirely normal and I would definitely not make an issue of trying to get reimbursed for one class right now. Be like Elsa! Let it go!
I misread your original post—they aren’t billing you for April, and in the future they are making up two missed sessions from when they were closed...but you want your money back from one dance lesson when your child was sick?
I would not expect a refund for illness. I think a credit for the closure is fair and it’s unfortunate it doesn’t work for your schedule but they can’t schedule around everyone.
