I obviously am not downplaying anything, but the vast majority people survive covid, so yes people will still be alive.
I just posted the transition team website. So it'll be interesting to see if things like testing are more available if states will use that help or not. Here it's so easy to get tested and they encourage people to get tested, but I know that's not the case everywhere. I'm happy to see that the transition team is hard at work.
Do you think it's possible we'll start to see extreme differences in case rates between blue states and red states when there is national guidance in place? Or will it not matter because people in blue states are selfish too and will be traveling and bringing COVID back? I'm trying to decide if political affiliation will matter once there is trusted guidance in place.
I assume as it gets more pronounced, the red states will start blaming the "coastal elite" for it somehow.
I hate to say it, but I don’t think you are wrong. I was chatting with a friends about this recently. He was saying to carve out the middle (and give them to Russia 🙄). But... I’m not sure it’s wrong.
We (CA) have the largest US population and the 5th largest economy in the world. We don't need any of the other states. I'm willing to loop in OR and WA but they have to toe the line.
Yeah... I’m in one of those little east coat states. Happy to join up with NY and up the coast.
Sadly, I still hope to retire somewhere with palm trees. And keep my health insurance. 🥴

It’s already happening. It started in blue states. Because we have an awful president who has continued to fuel the flames of red vs blue (which there is evidence of all over in our threads), the red states cared less about the blue states because it wasn’t happening to them. Now that it’s in the red states, the blue states are sitting back and taking some pride in their states doing better and others failing. It’s shitty all around. Americans are dying...we should be figuring out how to make things better, now wondering how much worse it’s going to get for them. The whole country stopped when it was Seattle and New York when it was there, and now it feels like people are basically saying “sucks to be you! You’ve got people who have been grossly misled by leadership so now you’re going to have to deal with it.”
This is a Trump issue. He has divided the country so much that people seem to base how much they care about what’s happening depending on which party the majority of the state votes for.
Sorry. Soapbox. We live in a red state and COVID is destroying us. (ETA: Our positivity rate is >20% in 47/99 counties...and that’s using the conservative numbers!) Incredible people are sick and dying. This is not the time for any red vs blue garbage. It’s time for us to follow what Biden says to unite as a country and work together as one.

I don’t know, but I’m really hoping we can get past this “red state vs blue state” stuff with the next administration. There are people from both parties in every state. We need to focus on working together, not an us vs them. The virus and increased rates have wandered through the country over the course of the pandemic. Right now, it’s bad in the Midwest where it’s largely red states...but in March - July, there were very, VERY few cases here compared to blue states. People here got more fatigued because we were taking all of these measures and shutting things down when sometimes there wasn’t a single positive case in 100 miles. So that fed the “it’s a hoax” thing. And now people are extremely fatigued and set in their ways. Truthfully, I think we might look back and think that we made a mistake to shut everything down immediately was a misstep. I think it was the right step at the time, given what we know now (Edit: *given what we knew THEN), but I’m not sure they’d make the same steps the next time. The US is HUGE...it’s not like shutting down a small country like Italy.
I think about this quite a bit. I think it was the right move only because we barely had any testing at this time and therefore could not ascertain how widespread the virus actually was - clearly, we know it was more widespread than we thought. In that case, while places like the NYC area, Seattle area, Bay Area, etc. seemed to be our first epicenters, we just didn't know if it was confined there versus elsewhere but just not overwhelming the hospitals yet.
I think our national appetite for the shutdown would have been far better if we had anyone but Trump in charge. A good leader would have told us why shutting down was important and provided an actual national response. But he fomented rebellion starting in April instead. And purposely pitted the red and blue states against each other. His response to the pandemic is beyond the pale and somehow he still got 71 million voters to vote for him.
Now, with better testing infrastructure (not where it should be in many places though, but certainly better than in March), responses can be more localized like we're doing in NY. However, the problem is transmission has become harder to prevent because it's happening more and more within private gatherings. And Trump will still be president on Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year's Day. Biden's job is going to be so much harder come January.

I’m assuming the Central Valley etc can choose to go with the others? My H’s home town has State of Jefferson signs.
I brought this up with someone at work the other day. He asked where we would get our food. From California and Mexico, like we mostly do now 🤷🏻♀️

Biggest issue is climate change.
I had to regularly drive from Bay Area to Redding during the last election and wow what a difference. Fox News at every hotel lobby, gun stores and cutsy pro-gun decorative signs ... I could go on and on. California truely is France joined to Kentucky.

I remember going to Obama’s first inauguration feeling so joyful and optimistic. Then he gave a speech saying that we were facing very difficult times ahead due to the financial crisis. That killed my mood pretty quick and prevented him from implementing most of the ambitious parts of his agenda. Now I feel like Biden getting screwed in a similar (maybe even worse) way. Trump and GOP will do nothing as winter and holiday gatherings start in earnest.
So Biden’s first year will be spent trying to deal with mass death and disease rather than cleaning up the Trump administration’s other messes. There will be no time to think about climate change, expanding health care etc.
Sorry to rain on the Biden parade but man this winter worries me.

Hey, man, we've already got Cascadia up here (and B.C. is totally on board), but we'd be happy to include California.
We already have a dope flag, but I bet we could put a California bear in the tree.

The basic requirement for citizenship in our new country is that you didn't vote for Trump in 2020. Never Trumpers are automatic. However, one time 2016 Trump voters are taken on a case by case basis. They have to show real remorse and take a sworn oath to never vote for any member of the family or administration in the future.

He's going to have to walk and chew gum at the same time. The rest can't wait. Some specifics might have to, but big steps need to happen. Get the experts back in and let them get to work on fixing it.

I agree - so many presidents in the past have put competent, policy experts in charge of different areas so they can multi-task. They have trusted those experts to make headway and policy changes, read their briefings, and then adopted them. All while dealing with major concerns like war or terrorism or economic collapse. We’ll be fine with Kamala and Joe in charge.
