My name has always been in the top 20 girls names and was in the top 10 for a very long time (Elizabeth). Going to school I only ever knew 2 or 3 other girls with the same name but they all used nicknames (SO MANY nickname options) while I use my full name. As an adult, I rarely meet someone with my "common" name.
As a kid I hated it and wanted to use a nickname, as an adult I love my name and now people try to use nicknames with me and I have to correct them all the time, lol!
Hats off to anyone who actually provides their name in the name thread. Hearing about a name without knowing the name itself kills me, lol.
It’s like the worst of vaguebooking!
My name, Melanie, is not unusual but I don’t meet a lot of them. And everyone calls me Mel, so I’m sure there are folks that don’t know my real name or thinks it’s Melissa.
I am also Melanie! Did your parents also get the name from Gone with the Wind? Lol.
I also go by Mel; I asked my Mom when I started getting called Mel as I cannot see calling a baby or toddler Mel. She said she doesn't remember.

I have a name that is always fairly popular in the Jewish community (I was not raised Jewish) but I only knew one or two people with the name growing up and they were always referred to as “Other XX” lol
My husband is Jewish and my married last name is recognizably Jewish and I get a lot of comments from people asking me what summer camp I went too, if I know random people from various local Jewish schools/organizations etc. I do not!
Mine is well-known but you don’t hear it all that often - Shannon. My mom’s name, interestingly enough, was pretty uncommon but now super trendy - Amelia. She’s always hated it, but I think it’s so pretty.
I’m Amy. It was the 2nd most common name the year I was born. It’s never bothered me, I like my name.
My daughter’s name is not popular and falls on the SSA Name List every year. It was 250 the year she was born and just landed in the low 400s this time. Her name is Cassidy.

jlt19, my DS is also a Patrick. I think it's interesting we have never met another kid Patrick (he's the only one in his school of 1000+) and yet it's a common name everyone knows. Maybe it's because of St. Patrick's Day? LOL

My birth name, Brittany, hasn’t been popular in decades. It was ranked at 41 the year I was born and #3 in the late 80s to early 90s. I legally changed my entire name, Aeona, several years ago and it’s very rare and not even in the top 1000.

I’m Lauren. There was a Laura Ann in my grade in grade school, and a couple Laurens in High school and college.
I feel like there are more of us that are younger than me. I once taught a class of 24 with 2 other Laurens, two Lauras, a Lori and a Maura. That was nuts
My name was in the top ten in the ‘50s and 60s, so I know lots of people my age with moms or aunts in their 50s/60s/70s with my name. Every other name in my parents’ HS yearbooks seemed to have my name, too. Hardly ever meet someone with my age (38) or younger with the name, and it’s barely cracking the top 1000 today.
My name (Melissa) was very popular in the 70s and 80s, and I always had at least a couple others in my grade in school. For a few years I went by Missy, until I switched schools mid-elementary and my mom asked my teachers to not use it. I actually like Missy and am still kind of salty she was so adamant about people not using it.
Kinda? Twice I had another person in the same class with me with my name (maybe spelled differently but pronounced the same).
I lived to tell the tale!
My son has a Top 5 name & has yet to have someone in his class w the same name but there is an older child at our bus stop w his. Honestly, I decided in college, when my grandfather died, I’d name my son, if I ever had one, to honor him. I never thought it’d be such a popular name but the meaning is more important to me.
My other son’s name was ranked 50 when I was pregnant & now it’s in the top 10 too!

My name was #82 for the year I was born, Kathleen. I go by Katie.
Eta My great grandma was Katie. My Mom, at age 5, asked her if she could have her wedding ring when she died, because 5 yr olds have tact. Great Grandma Katie laughed and agreed as long as Mom agreed to name her first daughter Katie. Great Grandpa was the town clerk and a notary and drew up papers and they all signed them with the agreement and he notarized it all.
My name was a common late 70's / 80's name. I don't see it too much nowadays for young people.
I will say that while I like my name, I wish my parents gave me a Spanish name so that when I meet people on the phone, they can make the connection that I'm Latino.

This is the name of my 10yo. I really don't want her to be Mel, but I know I can't stop it outside of my house. Her name is more popular than I expected but not overly common. When she was in 3rd grade there was one older and one younger in her elementary. I got it because I was specifically looking for a three syllable name that ended in an ee sound.
That is approximately how common my name is - a lot of people know someone with the same name but I only do online. My name Andrea is pronounced several different ways with the same spelling so I wanted to avoid that for my kids.

My name gets mispronounced frequently. I think Mel just naturally happens. I am such a stickler about nicknames that I am very picky about what I want to name my future kids! I don’t have any kids now; but love so many names and do not like the nicknames that go with them.
Also, I always assumed your name is Adara, and thought it was cool because I know an Adara and it is not common at all!
My name is pretty unusual as a legal name. It is not unusual as a porn star/stripper name. Because of this people always ask me what my REAL name is. My middle name is Renee which is pretty common, but even though I tried to go by it when I was younger, no one complied and I just gave up on that request.
Not particularly. It was more in fashion for people born 5-10 years before me. As such, I think people probably assume I’m old when they hear it. I like my name
I’m the opposite. I grew up not knowing anyone with my name. Then it became very popular late 90s. I now work for a large company and I’m pretty sure the executives I interact with assume I am much younger because most people in my company with my name are ~25.
melmel48 My screen name has nothing to do with my real name, but I love Adara too! I got it from a book. I couldn't use it for my kids though because I hate the way the uh ending sounds with my married name and it was my screen name long before I had kids so it would have felt really weird. I actually don't like my real name much.

Another one checking in. I had 2-3 others in my grade growing up. All the same spelling and not a nickname. Most strangers try to spell the proper way (Aimee). I feel like I’ve met a lot of kids named Amelia with the nickname of Amy recently too.
