The whole "white women" thing is confusing me or maybe I'm just being obtuse. When I walk around our small city it's overwhelmingly the white people who aren't wearing masks, everyone else, inside and out is still wearing them despite the state saying you don't have to if you are vaccinated.
I hope that when people are sick they'll mask up in the future, but I am not looking forward to only sick people wearing masks. If someone asks me why I'm wearing a mask and I have to tell them I have fucking cancer, I'm not sure I'll be able to keep it together.
I'm so sorry. That's hard. People should just leave masked people the fuck alone. It's not hard. When I worked in Chinatown a decade ago, masks weren't super duper common but were certainly more common than in other parts of the city. They didn't make me run away for fear of catching cooties and I certainly wasn't like "Why are you wearing that thing??" So, hopefully people don't act like assholes.

I have a friend that posted today about getting asked if she planned to get vaccinated because she was wearing a mask in a store. She's been vaccinated for a while.
In short, people are assholes, and as I said upthread, people are going to flip their opinions sooner rather than later I think.
Basically, once natural immunity wears off, we may see outbreaks in the fall in areas where far fewer people are vaccinated (or even where more people are vaccinated since people will be traveling more). No expert expects them to be as bad as pre-vaccination outbreaks, but there may be some localized bad situations. I keep shaking my head when I look at the states at the bottom of the list in terms of vaccinations - their numbers will still help, but not to the degree they will in other states.
And honestly, while my state and city are doing pretty well on the vaccination front and I'm content to not travel too far for a while, I think a big reason where I'm dying for more normalcy now is because I know the threat is there for another lousy fall or winter. Last summer was far less normal than right now, but that was the window of time where we carefully saw some family/friends, did some activities, etc., and so I'm kind of operating under the assumption that this is my chance to do more fun things and see more people before we might have to hunker down again.

Yes this will be the next existential crisis on my local progressive group.

I am sorry and I can sort of relate with your fear. I cannot wear a mask due to severe PTSD from trauma involving a face covering. Before any mandates were put in place last year, I was screamed and yelled at in public more times than I care to count about the fact I wasn't wearing a mask. At first I was able to just let the yelling kind of slide off my back but when it started getting really ugly and political, I just had enough and bunkered down at home.
A couple weeks ago I was out walking on a path and an older couple made a huge scene about the fact I was not wearing a mask. I just cried like a baby right then and there. Last friday was my first time in a restaurant since March 2020, obviosuly unnmasked, and it was terrifying. No body said anything to me but I did get a few "looks" when I went to the bathroom.
I have yet to encounter a location where I could go maskless inside so I'm just here observing.
I am visiting another state this weekend where I believe it is allowed. I will be with elderly (vaccinated) family members though so I am not sure how things will go. I will likely follow their lead.
Costco, Trader Joes, and Target are 3 places where I shop (semi) regularly that don't require it. I don't know about the Target in the city since things are more restricted there, but if you ever do shopping in the suburbs you'll probably run into people.
That said, very few people in Costco and TJ's last week were without masks. They aren't required, but they are definitely still the norm.

You know I don't leave the city! Our mask mandate is still in place (which of course Hogan is being an ass about).

Lol - I guess I didn't realize you never shopped at those places Even when I lived downtown, I came out here for Costco and TJs! And usually went to Target up by work, since the one in the city wasn't terribly convenient.
• The federal government’s guidance on wearing masks to curb the spread of the coronavirus changed dramatically twice during the pandemic. The most recent change, which said that fully vaccinated people could largely stop wearing masks, came in May, and its suddenness surprised many Americans. • While some critics raised questions about the rapid turnabout, experts say that progress in vaccination, declines in cases, new scientific research, and real-world evidence from other countries justified the change in policy. • Despite this, public health experts acknowledged that the federal government’s messaging over masks has been flawed and has prompted needless confusion among the public.
spindle92, your stories during the pandemic have been heartbreaking and it makes me wish you had been able to ride this out in TX where no one would have bat an eye at you not wearing a mask. Then again, you probably still prefered to not be in TX during all this, lol.
The lifting of mask restrictions for vaccinated individuals has kicked up a flurry of almost-but-not-quite-inappropriate-for-work discussions on my work's virtual forums. Insert the John Stewart popcorn meme for me as well.

That ducking sound bite of hogan being an ass about seeing the mayor without a mask. Fucking a man...
I just got back from my Costco, in my city-Billy section of AA county. And it was still 80% masks. Call my judgy (I am), but I swear all the maskless people had a smug look on their face. Or maybe, it’s just been so long since I saw mouths I can’t recognize resting face well anymore.
Well, my office has officially adjusted it's covid protocols to say the vaccinated no longer need to mask at work.
It was a break from the normal schedule of covid-related announcements, which have previously come out on Fridays.
Ah well. I kept on as normal with my mask today - the email came out after my late lunch, so it's not like it would have changed a whole lot for me today... Tomorrow, I might see what it feels like to walk in without a mask on. I've now worked more days on site since Covid started than I worked on site between being hired and covid shutting everything down.
I recall reading articles that covid was likely in Italy far before it was on china (but not recognized until much later). I see this from December, but don't know how it's all shaken out: www.globaltimes.cn/content/1209646.shtml

White Marsh Costco was all masked when I was there which I was surprised about.
I still haven’t seen anyone without a mask in the wild yet and I have been out a lot the last few weeks. I am mostly in the city of course but did venture to White Marsh and Towson.

I thought we were pretty damn certain the virus did originate in China, specifically Wuhan or somewhere else in Hubei?
As for the WSJ piece, I don't see how workers being sick in November 2019 is some kind of smoking gun. I thought it was clear that covid was circulating well before actually being identified. And I don't see how it's unreasonable to assume that if the virus was circulating in Wuhan without being known until a few weeks later, it's possible at least one worker was infected outside of work and then infected others at work, or that they all were infected outside of work.
Science and medicine: Stay home Trump et al. : no Science and medicine: wear a mask Trump et al.: also no Science and medicine: here are 3 functioning vaccines, please get one Trump et al.: still no
I'm sorry, and I'm SUPER sorry it took me so long to get back to this and delete it. I had a crazy busy day after checking in on here and obviously left within a minute or so of posting that.
All of my coworkers are going maskless at this point. I think it is so interesting how quickly it changed. We have worked in person since last June. We are healthcare education and everyone was soooo careful. Keeping things really strict in personal lives. Always respecting protocols etc. We all got the vaccine the second they were available. We have been apprehensive about our safety.
But the second the mask mandate was lifted, bam masks were off. I have been thinking about why that was. I think it is just a combo of trusting the science, but also level of exhaustion we are dealing with. That is at least where I am at. Like you tell me I am safe? Perfect, I am going to let this worry and anxiety go.
Kind of @@ bc of my job: Teachers here started unmasking once we were all vaccinated in spaces outside out where students are (faculty room, after school meetings, etc.). It was very tentative at first ("I'm fully vaccinated. Are you ok if I'm in here without a mask to eat my lunch?") and has pretty much become step into the space and remove the mask. We've all been fully vaxxed for 2-3 months at this point. Everyone still masks around students and students are fully masked all the time, even though they are starting to be vaccinated.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I'm at my pulmonologist's office. They asked me (as part of the normal covid screening) if I'd had any shortness of breath in the last 14 days.
I mean, I get it, but I'm guessing most of us here have.
Ha ha That is like when we've gone to the allergy/asthma doc and they ask about cough or runny nose...um the right answer to get in the door is no? A bit awkward lol.

I think it's the exhaustion. Masks are still required at my job (at least in shared/common areas), but when I can get rid of it, I do. And I think it's also why I am booking alllllll the concerts, Broadway shows, etc. that I can. The idea of crowds petrified me for so long and I can't believe how suddenly I've just become like FULL HOUSE AT HAMILTON?? YES PLEASE!!!
Influencers say they were offered money to discredit the Pfizer vaccine. In France, some suspect Russia is behind it.
LONDON — Several European influencers say they have been offered money to use their social media presence to discourage their millions of followers from receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine by a suspicious agency that French officials reportedly think could be linked to Russia.
According to the influencers, they were approached online and asked to tell their large followings that the Pfizer vaccine is dangerous and has sparked more deaths than the one developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been plausibly linked to extremely rare but in some cases fatal blood clots. European and U.S. regulators have not linked the Pfizer vaccine to any such side effects.

I am with you there. I was extremely conservative for a long time (like barely leave my house for months conservative) and I'm just over it. Now that I know the chances of me getting someone sick or getting sick are low, I'm ready to do basically anything. If I have to wear a mask (or if it is a norm even if not required), I'll wear one. But please let me go places and see people and do things.
I'm disturbed that one of the earliest and most pervasive conspiracy theories that the virus was manmade and escaped might be true.
I was thinking the same thing. I fought against it on FB a year ago with a friend of a friend. And now... yikes! On the other hand, at the time, I was citing respected, but biased, scientists and she was citing ... Tucker Carlson.
I'm glad we're just really looking at the possibility now, because I am unsure my mind could have coped with knowing that it truly was a The Stand scenario and not something that had morphed in the wild.
