I’m visiting family and trying to keep cool. My parents have AC although it doesn’t work the greatest. They stopped heating their hottub in hopes it gets cool. I spent the day with other relatives and we floated in their little above ground pool and hung out In the shade day drinking for hydration. I stopped at a 7-11 for ice and they were sold out this morning but I found some at another corner store. We don’t have plans to go anywhere the next 2 days. I don’t remember it ever being past 106 degrees here. Cooling off in the cold water and drinking icy drinks is your best option for keeping cool. The sound and the lakes are still pretty cold in the Seattle area but you have to find shade and not have to make a long trek to get there, avoiding 11-3pm.
It's about 75F in my ground-floor condo. I'm thankful for the surrounding trees, and the east/west facing windows. I'm worried about the next two days.
@@@@@@ I have an 11 month old, and this is the 1st night he hasn't worn a sleep-sack and so far he's doing fine. I really hope the temps stay below 80F inside for us. Does anyone have tips for keeping infants cool? I can keep him down to a diaper or s/s onesie, and I've been using a damp/cool washcloth as a teether and cooler for him.
Simple things like evaporating water on your skin (a spray/mister bottle with ice in the tank, a wet washcloth from the fridge) can make intense heat without a/c more bearable.
This is a good tip. Before AC, I used to go to bed with a damp towel draped over me and it helped a lot.
My nighttime hot weather trick is about a few minutes in the shower as cold as you can stand it. It really helps to keep you cool through the night, especially if you have a fan. Be safe!
We’re visiting my in-laws in Redding this weekend, I can’t believe it’s going to be hotter up there than here. I’m worried for folks, stay hydrated and listen to your bodies - if you start to feel overwhelmed, don’t push yourself.
I grew up in Redding without a/c and wearing a wet tshirt to bed helped a lot. Ice on your wrists can get you feeling cooler quickly. I’ll also watch the thermostat like a hawk and the second it’s cooler outside than in, open up everything I can until I go to bed, get up early (like 5 am) and open up again until it heats up. The more cool air you can trap inside makes a big difference.
We’ve got a small portable unit (it was a handmidown from a friend who got central a/c) that makes things reasonable, but we’re getting back Monday afternoon, so I don’t know how well it will work with whatever temp the house is at that point.
Ice on your wrists can get you feeling cooler quickly.
also the skin directly behind your ears.
Rinse your hands and wrists in cool water and then take your now cooled and damp index and middle fingers and run them down the crease where your ears meet your head - it’ll cool you off and as air passes and evaporates as you walk or whatever it will continue for a few minutes (if your hair is pulled back - which in heat I assume it is). That trick helps me with nausea as well.

Sleepless in Portland checking in.
The heat wave seems to have broken our AC. So that's great. I am snuggled up under a wet sarong on the couch trying to cool off enough to go to sleep.
@@@@ Our child finally fell asleep on the living room floor naked under a wet blanket, which is kind of a mixed blessing, since it meant we ended up turning down the offer of a friend's AC'ed living room floor to sleep on. If we can't get it fixed tomorrow, at least we have friends we can stay with.
Good luck to all of you!! We were traveling from the Bay Area and up the Oregon coast and in Portland and Seattle last week while it hit 100 here in Denver, now it’s cool and rainy here and hot there. Crazy the temperature swings everywhere this year! After being there, it’s crazy to envision it this hot, stay safe everyone!
We were *very* fortunate to have an a/c installed a couple years ago. It was "we're really only going to need it a couple weeks a year. Is it worth doing? It'll be nice for those couple of weeks at least." We try to do one major update per year on the house and that was what we decided that year.
@@@the a/c has been cooling the downstairs but doesn't seem to be getting circulation into the grands' bedrooms and pretty much upstairs. the grands have been "camping" in a tent in the back yard because it's actually been cooler in the tent when that corner's shaded at night than it's been in their bedrooms. Right beside the a/c unit. Which we were told would be quiet because it's near our neighbors' houses as that's the best location for it. It's.Not.Quiet.
The grocery stores out here in my town just north of Seattle (SnoCo. picksthemusic lives near me as well and may have seen this) have been shutting down. We've had breakdowns at Central Market, Safeway, Costco, Albertson's, Fred Meyer... If the temps in the freezer hit 60, alarms go off. The condensers in the units just can't handle the heat; they're not made to be heavy duty enough. People have been posting locations of freezer shutdowns across our community pages on FB. They're either losing all the food in the freezers if they don't have backup in the rear of the stores where the food can be moved before it gets too hot. Store workers have been hustling like crazy to get food out of the freezers and either into the back or into dumpsters outside.
Heading to Vashon for the day, just for a cha be of scenery. We’re ok in my house, which is shaded by a giant tree in the front yard. I have a walk AC unit but it’s from the early 80s and is slowly dying. Picking up a a window unit from a friend today, and @@@@ I think the kids will sleep downstairs with me tonight.
Hoping we don’t have to wait on a ferry line to get back, but I’ve got towels on ice for us if we do, and tons of water 🤞.
I don't have A/C, nor do any of my family or close friends. We have been hanging out in lakes and backyard pools because it's hit 90 degrees indoors. I'm surprised so many folks on this board have A/C, because only 44% of the metro area does.
@@i really feel for those with small children and pets, my friend has been constantly misting her toddler but he's not napping well so she has a soggy cranky kid on her hands.
Southern Vancouver Island at 27 in my house with all the fans on we have which isn’t many because it doesn’t get hot like this here. It’s meant to get up to 37 today and tomorrow. All the local grocery and liquor stores are out of ice and a lot of restaurants are closed until Tuesday. We are not used to this here especially in June. 🥵

We are about 20 miles south of Portland and have already broken our all-time high. It was 107 at our house yesterday and expected to be 113 today. I am so thankful we have a/c but because of our house layout, the bedrooms get the evening heat. It was 86 in our room when I went to bed last night at 11.

I keep getting extreme heat advisory alerts and it’s making me cranky. I think it’s pretty clear that it’s stupid hot. I stepped outside to water my trees this morning and I was covered in sweat within 5 minutes. It’s so oppressive just opening the door to let my dog go to the bathroom.

And now we’re dealing with power outages! I’m in suburbs east of Seattle and there are a couple in my area, one only a few blocks from me. I think I’d cry being without at least a fan.

For a cheaper (under $200) option, evaporative air coolers aren’t bad. You don’t need to install them or vent them out a window — they basically work like fans except you add ice water and they blow cool air.

I’m figuring we’ll have a ton of power outages tomorrow.
Luckily, the city has cooling stations all over the city, including libraries and community centers.

It's 93° in our house and our freezer won't go below 21°. So it stopped making ice. A friend brought me a homemade margarita (she makes fabulous margaritas) but we have no ice! Luckily we have an ice cube tray and chest freezer in the basement so I'm impatiently waiting for them to freeze.
We walked up and jumped in the lake for a little bit. I'm so glad we could do that because our house is in the 90s right now. I wish we could go to a hotel but I want to make sure the cats are ok #spoiled. I mean, who really runs this house? Lol.
We were at a hotel that hosts a lot of weddings last night and the bride had a long sleeve dress. I wanted to cry for her, I can't even. She looked beautiful but omg I would be so sweaty.
