I’m sorry, what? Multiple online forms are not allowing him to continue filling them out after he enters his ethnicity?
Nope. He worked for banks before so I don’t know if it is outside banking but he applies on line. Enters his name. Age. And then ethnicity. After he chooses his it pretty much says end of form and wont let him answer anymore questions. Needless to say he hasn’t gotten a call back.
What happens if he puts his ethnicity as white? Does the form change?
Price of fruits are insane too. Halo mandarines are 30% more expensive and no sales at all. Raspberries are also 40% more expensive! Bananas are strangely 3% cheaper.
Someone in my daughter's class brought in raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries instead of cupcakes for their birthday. All I could think of is how much money they must've spent to feed 17 kids fresh berries 😂
We had our neighbour and his two kids over last weekend for dinner. I had fresh strawberries, blueberries, and pineapple on the table and he joked to his kids how much we must love them for all the fresh fruit we provided. I actually found decent sales that day, but it's still up quite a bit from normal.
I think right now he is going to cast a bigger net. Problem is due to gas it is really hard for him to swallow a long commute again and there are less banks etc (which is what he has done for years) in our area.

He does put it as white. We were lucky where even though he had different jobs in the last 17 years he didn’t physically apply since then. When he switched jobs he was usually recruited by another company. I definitely am not a fan of the computer automation forms. It has only been about six weeks though so we aren’t too concerned yet. I have told him he should apply to local stores though since he could ride his bike there and not use any gas. The two hour round trip commute was killing us financially. Plus I don’t drive so many days I would have to get an Uber/Lyft to work which cost $$$$ Between not having those two expenses we are temporarily still fine with one income.
fancynewbeesly,Is entering his ethinicity required? I never put my ethinicity as it has nothing to do with anything. If they ask, I refuse. I know the online forms are a pain. My doctor's office required how you identify as a question and wouldn't let you proceed if you didn't answer. Needless to say, I don't check in online.

He did try that once and then one bank emailed him and asked and he replied and never heard back. I don’t know if he tried that with other places. I hate online applications for everything. It is such a pain especially because even at doctors you can’t circumvent certain questions. Applying for a job with online applications is new for him and just so impersonal too.

I believe you but this doesn't make much sense. It doesn't matter what the industry is, screening for employment on the basis of race is illegal. That multiple employers would start the form with only name and race makes no sense, or that someone would follow up and ask his race. I've never encountered an employment application that is structured that way.

Yes. I hate to say it but it sounds like he's lying. I can see it happening one place if it's glitchy or they are just assholes who are willing to take a risk, but it is absolutely not standard and absolutely illegal. It is also really weird one place would have emailed him to ask. That's something they are not allowed to consider when making employment decisions and having a paper trail showing that they specifically reached out to ask him his ethnicity would be incredibly stupid and against policy everywhere.
Online applications have been standard for 15+ years so I think he also needs to get over the dislike. It's just how it is. Honestly that makes him sound old and out of touch, which might be the bigger problem in the job market.

All of this! Paper applications just aren’t a thing anymore. Even if you want to work at target and go in to apply you will be shown to a computer that you can use to fill out the application.
Ethnicity is usually an ending question and in the optional category. I would encourage him to reach out to his local EEOC if he’s seriously running into this issue. This is not legal.
fancynewbeesly, I’m with wildrice, I think your H is lying to you. What he’s describing is illegal in the US. Employers cannot screen job applicants based on race. Even when they do ask, it’s illegal to require a response. I’d dig deeper with your H.
Heating oil (which heats homes and water in the northeast) is currently $5.99 a gallon. I have never seen it that high. A typical tank is 250 gallons, and you can’t usually get less than 100 gallons delivered.
We are caught between a wild housing market (projected to be the fastest growing in the US for 2022) and needing more space.
My house value has doubled since I bought 12 years ago, but houses are going hundreds of thousands over asking the day they go on the market.
So we looked into a renovation/addition and the first quote was more than the value of my house. So. I guess we will just keep on keeping on.
I just want a second full bath, and better space since we both WFH FT now.
I am worried about this for the winter. There was just an article in the paper this morning that Mainers kept their homes at unsafe temperatures at the highest rate in the nation this past year. It's not optional to heat your home here, but heating oil is rapidly becoming unaffordable for so many people.

I would agree except I did see it at at least two banks by us. I was sitting next to him while he was working on the applications. I think other places just aren’t calling back. But again I did tell him to cast a larger net around I believe it was just way too narrow where he was applying. 🤷♀️🤦♀️
We will see. It hasn’t been two months yet. I feel bad derailing this thread though because cost of everything has gone up. Fresh fruit alone. 🤣

fancynewbeesly I am with everyone else here. This type of questions is usually at the very end. What other type of information is he entering before? Do they ask for his whole resume? It might be that his work history/experience/degrees are what is disqualifying him and he might be under the impression that his ethnicity might be the issue since it's the last question? Does he have to go through a personality test?
When I worked for Target 15+ years ago, I had to do an online form and some questions were related to my personality. If you passed, you were given an interview.

Then I would record this happening and report it somewhere. That's so blatantly illegal. Which is why it seems unlikely that a company would put it out there so obviously.
Does anyone typically buy the 3pk of honey bears at Costco? It was $17 last night! I don't remember what it ever was before though. But I know it wasn't close to $20. I feel like it was a single digit number. We eat peanut butter and honey toast almost everyday and I think I'm going to need to switch it up.
With food prices so high food waste with my kid is super triggering for me, and I wish I was more chill about it. I don't want to be telling her to finish her food, but I HATE throwing it out because it's something that won't keep. I already do small portions so it's really not a ton of food but it stresses me out.

I would 100% screenshot/document and bring it to the attention of an attorney, or heck even the news. It is bizarre - it is clearly illegal to require you to fill out ethnicity for a job application.
This reminds me of when I started applying for jobs in college - and I’m old so this is 30 years ago - and my dad insisted I had to put that I was in “good, vigorous health” on my resume. Lol!!! Even 30 years ago that wasn’t ok lol, but I guess my dad was coming from a 1960s job applying perspective 😂
For prices - food and travel are hitting us the most. DS1 lost too much weight this year (he runs cross country and track - grew 5 inches and lost 20 pounds, Oy) and his pedi and nutritionist basically want him to eat anything/everything he wants and will eat before he leaves for camp for the summer. 15 year old boys with a go ahead from their dr to eat literally everything they want is a painful grocery experience.
Also I bought 4 sets of airline tickets in the past month. That was also painful. I don’t drive so don’t pay attention to gas/fuel prices, but flights were a shock to the system

Similar. My dad showed me his early 80s resume which listed he was married with 2 kids and enjoyed SCUBA diving and skiing. No!!!
Unfortunately, I've been living in countries where it's totally legal to require a certain age/sex/marital status for positions, and where you're expected to have a whole bio on the first page of your resume complete with picture. I half do it, and I hate it every time.

I don't buy that so I can't say. But I've only had a Costco membership for a year or 2 because I was added to my employer's business membership. The prices there are much higher on almost everything and that was before these increases.

Oh Costco is like THE place to get groceries here. It's significantly cheaper then everywhere else. Also randomly Whole Foods because they matched mainland prices when Amazon bought them.
I had to buy trash bags for work the other day. The white bags for the kitchen, they come 200 per box and are around 12 gallons in size. They used to be like $12 a box at Sam's Club. I am seeing them at $18 or $19 at Sam's Club and Costco. I randomly decided to throw the item into google and found them for a few dollars less per box at Target and was surprised since Sam's/Costco are known to be cheaper. I ended up doing order pickup at Target for them.
Unfortunately my 13 year old DS has suddenly started eating like a teenager. And DH has decided we need to start eating healthier...more fresh fruit, veggies, etc. They have terrible timing. Our grocery spending has jumped so much. And I am definitely not used to them eating like this, I've had to make 2 Amazon fresh orders this week. And I'll need to actually go to a store today or tomorrow because of course they didn't have everything I needed.
Just a reminder for people struggling with the cost of produce — frozen produce is just as healthy. The price of frozen has gone up too….but for out of season on produce, it’s still less expensive than fresh. Berries, mango, peaches, corn, broccoli are all quite tasty frozen.
