I almost added Doritos to my cart yesterday but they were $4.50 for a regular bag. I put them back. Insanity.
Doritos are DS1’s favorite and I occasionally buy them when we have movie nights. The price is horrifying. They were nearly $6 the last time I bought them. SIX DOLLARS.
The 60 pack of eggs that I normally buy went from $16.99 to $28.99. I know a big part of it is the avian flu but ouch! Colorado also passed a bill that all chickens have to be cage free so that is causing egg prices to rise as well.
I did not know that and it makes me happy. I buy Vital Farms eggs anyway, but it’s nice to know the other options are getting slightly better.

It’s so crazy. These are on sale 2 for $9. Didn’t it used to be like 2 or $5 on sale? I rarely buy big bags of them but it sounded good with my salad lol.
We're making sure we don't miss any sales. I'm happy, but so surprised things are still on sale. We like bone in pork chops and they were on sale for 1.99 a pound. I'm always afraid that every sale will be the last. We have a chest freezer and since we bought it we have kept gallon jugs of water on the bottom to take up room. I need a step stool to be abke to reach down there anyway! But now I took them out because we need al the room to take advantage of sales.

We had our small chest freezer unplugged for a while because it was too expensive to stock up, but the last couple weeks I’ve found random meat to be really cheap. I have a full stock of chicken, beef, and pork now. We should be able to go ~3 months without buying protein. That will be a huge boost to our budget in the new year.

That's fantastic! We have some odd items that I got great sales on that we don't normally buy. We're going to cut eating out to almost nothing but I can't give up variety and special food without being miserable. I have a rack of ribs and a whole bunch of chicken wings. I have a big roast beef and I've got this awesome Mexican shredded beef recipe. I also have a pork shoulder so I can make Bo Ssam. Not authentic but at least we can attempt different cuisines and not feel like we're giving everything up. We have a basement and a big pantry shelf. It's troubling to have to stock up like this so wr can keep eating as we normally do, but I feel so incredibly fortunate that we have the ability to do it.

I buy a bag or two of snack food every week and this past week I was shocked that they were ~5$ each! And I swear the bags are smaller two. In my head a bag of chips is 2.50, even name brand.

Wood. We have a 750 sq.ft. deck that needs to be finished. I've been bugging my husband for years to finish it. Now it will double our protected price.
If you are in the south, shop the BOGOs at Publix. I often plan what I'm going to eat around them or stock up. I've seen some things are now B2G1 instead of BOGO. Coke was/is having a sale on 8 packs B2G2, so I got 4 total. In the long run it's cheaper, and I'll use these to keep soda consumption down instead of using 2 liters. The Publix brand soda used to be 79 cents. Now it's $1. Everything is going up.

Milk. I am on the border between PA and WV. Milk (2%) is $4.51 in PA and $2.93 in WV. There is no logical reason for that discrepancy for me. Especially when I can close my eyes, spin in circle, spit and hit a cow.
It has to be some PA tax thing. But it drives me crazy that the milk in the store that I can walk to is almost twice as much as the milk 6 miles away.
And electricity. We just recently had to shop around because our previous 5.99c/kWh jumped to 19.99c/kWh when the contract expired. Cheapest I could find was 13.99c/kWh. Even on the “budget” plan our bill has almost tripled for LESS energy usage (no pool, hot tub or AC running right now).

H found a sale of 2 for $4 (not Doritos, other chips) and he bought 4 bags. We can't remember the last time you could buy 2 bags of chips for $4! We were hosting my mom's birthday party so thankfully the 4 bags weren't just for us to eat.
Milk has doubled in my area. Eggs also, but we ate fewer eggs over the holidays so I haven't felt that sting too much.
I will add electric kettles to the list. I shattered mine (stupid tic I have and I wasn't paying attention) a few weeks ago. When I went to look for a replacement it was more than $100 and I couldn't find a replacement carafe at all (even on eBay).
I found one that should work and waited til the price dropped on Amazon. So sometime around the end of this month I'll have a new Kettle that was 44% off and still more than I wanted to spend.
I guess I'm grateful for the opportunity to practice delayed gratification. But making tea in the microwave is getting old fast.

Bagels. Well, all bread, but bagels are $1 each at the grocery store - whether fresh from the bakery or the horrible industrial ones. My boys must have just had a growth spurt because they are now eating one whole bagel each (used to be just 1/2). I decided to see how much they are at Panera and I discovered that I can get 13 for $7.50 on Tuesdays. I’m going tomorrow and it’s going to be my new thing. Kind of a pain, to make a special trip on Tuesdays, but whatever.
Also, I picked up a pound of ground turkey on sale the other day for $3.99 instead of the regular 6.99. I decided to “stock up” and get two packs because IT WAS SO CHEAP! Then I started down the aisle with my two pounds of turkey and thought to myself, “I can’t believe I think $4/pound for poultry is cheap!” 😩
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I do this every few weeks for my kids as well when they get on a bagel kick - my store will slice them in half for me and give plastic bags to store or freeze them in.
I also have been shocked by Doritos prices. Kroger has had them for $1.99 when you buy 4-5 of them so I bought a ton and put them in our food storage. This is the first year I've been buying extra during sales and stocking up. We don't have a chest freezer so it's just dry goods but it's helping with costs. Cereal is another one that gets me.
I bought a pound of turkey for sandwiches today and it was $16!
We buy deli turkey weekly for sandwiches. Usually a pound. And it is ridiculous the cost now. Packing school lunches is the worst thing lately. Figuring out a meal and healthy snacks. It is just ridiculous on the cost for it.

What kind of kettle are you buying!? Target has several for $25 or less.

I got a Chefman with temp control, but I didn't even think to check Target. It was about $25 on sale but hasn't shipped yet, so if I can find something similar at Target I'll just cancel it. I don't want to wait a month to be able to make good tea 🙂 Thanks for the tip!

FYI for kids in the summer - see if your local bowling alley has a "Kids Bowl Free" program. We joined ours and it was a huge savings - I think we just pay shoe rental.
Hotels. One hotel we've stayed at a few times cost 150/night with free parking in 2019, and in 2023 it'll be 270/night plus parking. Another hotel we stayed at in 2019 was $235 a night with $15 resort fee. In 2023 it's $380/night (that's the spring break "sale" price), $25/night resort fee, $34/night parking fee.
Agree about takeout. Our same orders that were around $35 in 2019 are now 50-60.
ETA: Concerts. If you want good seats, be prepared to part with approximately a thousand bucks....
We were one of the lucky ones to get Taylor Swift tickets - we're at a HUGE arena in Houston, second to last section from basically the roof, and so far to the side we're almost behind the stage and the tickets were $138 PP
We wanted to take our kids to see RHCP and it was going to be $800 for 4 of us
I encountered a new one yesterday: trash bags. I paid $25 for the 120 count of glad trashbags yesterday.
I haven't noticed a HUGE difference in most of the foods I buy since I always shop sales anyways. But eggs and chicken are ridiculous. As for the trash bags, I saw how expensive the name brand ones were so I bought an off brand of 60 kitchen bags for $6.
A burger at pretty much every bar and grill in our area is like $16. Two years ago the same burger would have been easily under $10.
Going out to eat is one of our favorite hobbies lol. We are cutting it out completely in January to save $. I am also doing Dry January so that is another good reason to not even bother lol.
Also I have stopped shopping at Aldi. I don't know why but their prices have gone up so much and now are equivilant to our normal grocery store. It isn't worth the extra effort it takes to drive out of the way to Aldi.

I went to the supermarket the other day and I don't generally shop for eggs there so can't compare those specific prices, but I was shopping for milk nearby and I heard a guy yell out 100% PRICE INCREASE ON EGGS!!!!! I turn around and he looks genuinely shocked, and then he said it was a 100% increase on the same exact dozen eggs he bought only 5 days earlier.

Same! It used to be fine that I couldn’t get everything at Aldi. I woke start there and then hit sprouts and/or Trader Joe’s.
But not not only can I not get everything I need, their prices are higher than sprouts. So now it’s sprouts and TJ’s for me.

I go to Publix every week and mainly only Get BOGOs and get the rest from Walmart pickup. I will get fruit and snacks depending what is on bogo that week. But eggs. $7 a dozen?!! That’s what I saw this weekend.
