Aww circa1978 that's so sweet. I am sitting here crying. It sounds like they're helping you make some nice memories which is great. I am so sorry you are going through this. I hope you all have a gentle transition. So much love for you and the family.
sofamonkey, praise be to a chill prep for NYE--I am doing the same and REALLY looking forward to it. We're going to hibachi with a group of people at 5, and then they're all coming back to our place for drinks, desserts and games (WAY easier than planning prepping & making a meal/apps/everything).

My H’s contribution was to order the pizzas well before we were hungry, since they might be busy. I really appreciated that too! I’ll be rewarding him with gathering the wants of people and placing the order! 😂🤣
My house cleaner is coming for the first time this month today! I'm looking forward to a clean house! (DS was sick most of the month so I had to cancel her other regularly scheduled dates.)

We did family secret Santa last night at MIL and FIL's, so because it was going to be later in the evening we just put L to bed there. He has slept there several times with no issue.
Apparently last night around midnight he woke up, probably because older kids were still there being loud with presents, and this somehow turned into him being brought into the living room to play, see the outside lights (he goes to bed before it's dark since it's summer here, and FIL was bummed he'd never be awake for them), open one of his presents and dance until like 1:30. As a reminder, he is 19 months old. YOLO, kid 🤦🏻♀️😂 I'm not even mad because whatever, one night won't kill him, but this is such such evidence of how grandparents lose their damn minds haha.
I also think about the people who turned him away. I would like to think I would let him in, but depending on my own situation, I'm not sure that I would have. (My H plows for the state, so isn't home in snowstorms. Would I have let a strange man into my house with just me and my kids?)

He is amazing for helping so many people.
I was just putting myself in that situation and wondering what I'd do! If my H was home we would let him in, but I don't even like to let in a male contractor or the like if I'm home alone with DD. I suppose I could put someone up on our basement family room pullout couch and we have a lock on the door into the basement that would prevent someone from coming back up into the house. I can see it now - here's a blanket and some food and water, but I'm locking your ass down there so don't even try coming into the house!
This storm was so crazy - I read another story of a Target that let people seek shelter there and set them up with air mattresses, blankets, food and water. Nice to see people helping each other out.

Yeah, I feel like if it were 55 degrees and dry out I'd be like no, but those were unusual circumstances and I just doubt anyone out in it was out for nefarious reasons, so I'd have let him in and not taken his money either.

In an extreme circumstance like this, I think the answer is yes - let him in! What are the chances he's up to something nefarious? Probably much lower than the chances that he's going to freeze to death in a record snowstorm. Most people are good people.
With kids I'd probably make us all sleep in the same, locked room, though.

I know, I'd hope that my knee jerk reaction would be to just let him in and figure out safety logistics later. It's interesting that so many people who were there in that storm and not just hypothetically thinking about it like we are would not let him in! Maybe being a young burly man didn't work in his favor here, people may have been more amenable to helping out someone elderly, a woman or someone with children.

People on GBCN don't even answer their doorbells so I don't think we as a people would have let him in. LOL I'd like to think I would have though. What a hero!

Well in a storm like that I would at least talk to him through my Ring camera LOL!!

FIL gave DH and I a ridiculous amount of money for Christmas. My instinct was invest in some art and DH was like he prefers art that means something and let's wait to get some on future travels.
3 things come to mind DH:
1) You recently told me waterparks are our best bets for vacations at kids' current ages. Wtf kind of art does Great Wolf Lodge sell?
2) I want big ass art, and you DH would freak at cost to ship that home.
3) Meaningful art can be bought on vacations I agree, but also the internet means we can buy from places we have already been Dude.

I'm making the final batch of chex mix of the season today. It's got an odd mixture of items b/c I was trying to use up the last of the ingredients and I wasn't about to buy more of anything just b/c it's not quite enough.
Something in my house is dinging/alerting but I can't figure out what it is. It's none of my devices, which means it has to be one of H's, but I can't figure out what it is. UGH! My ears are dying!
In the great void that is the week between Christmas and NY, I sleep in today. Later than I meant to, but at 9:15 my phone rings. I decline the call. I see I have a text message from someone saying they will be here at 9:15. Then the phone rings again. I’m like “fuck”. So, still in bed, head on the pillow, I answer it. And it’s a contractor who is supposed to be coming by for an estimate, at 2pm. On Saturday. He’s all “I’m on your porch, you aren’t answering.” I’m all discombobulated, but sputter out something about how I’m sorry, I was expecting him at 2 tomorrow and he will have to give me a few minutes because I’m not up yet, happy to get it done today since he was in the area, but need a minute to comboulate. A little more back and forth about the appointment time while I’m getting out of bed. I peak out the window and there are not extra cars in front of the house.
Fucker was on someone else’s porch in my town, where he *did* have a 9am Friday appointment. Calling me.
I've been following that case of the Idaho students. I don't know why I felt so affected by it. I was afraid they would not find the killer so I am happy for the families (and the public at large) that they've made an arrest. He's from the very small town our 2nd home is in and he was picked up near there, which is nowhere near the murders. It just feels so crazy to me.

Right, its easy to say in hindsight, but maybe it wasn't clear at the time exactly how desperate the situation was. If 10 different houses turned him away, I'm guessing it wasn't so straightforward.

Oooh I know an untapped market opportunity when I hear it!
My mom used to do outreach 2x/week. We lived in a rural area.
One particularly bad winter, prior to cell phones, she was stranded during a blizzard. She walked to the nearest farm house and the people were kind enough to let her stay the night until the morning when they drove her the hour back to our house.
Goodreads automatically syncs on my kindle. I rarely do actual books because I read at random times and don’t want to bother DH.
Do more people read actual books?
I only use a Kindle, but I have the wifi turned off most of the time because I borrow library books and don't want them going back to the library before I'm ready for them to go back. Usually, this means that when I finish a book it doesn't automatically sync. I just manually add them, but I don't usually get more than 2-3 books behind on my entries so it's not difficult to catch up.

I do not own an e-reader. I like the covers and I also found it unsettling to not know how far into a book I was. The % read or pages read didn’t convey it to me brain well.
