My kitchen is such a disaster, I really need to get in there and straighten up. Ugh I don’t wanna! But if I do it, I’ll have plenty of space and calm to bake the rest of the cookie dough I have in the fridge. Yes. I’m trying to bribe myself with fresh baked cookies. Whatever works, right?

I’m ready for my SIL’s family to leave. My nephew is a menace. He cut DS’ pillow with scissors, broke several toys, and does not listen. H had a coke to Jesus talk with SIL and nothing has changed. H and I agree they can’t come back until he can listen and behave.

My kids have never caused damage like that, but if they did I'd be mortified and would be replacing everything. If she and BIL don't I wouldn't let them back period.
We are supposed to meet another couple out tonight, but my H has a sore throat and sniffles. It's been SUPER dry in the house so I'm waiting to see if it improves in the next couple of hours - otherwise we're going to have to reschedule. Which is such a bummer - she's someone I've known through a professional org for a few years, but we've only hung out socially once before and neither of us have met the others' spouse before so I was looking forward to it. She's super nice so I'm sure she won't be upset if we have reschedule, but I also don't want to!
Is it normal to spend money on your HVAC every year? We've had so many problems in the last 2.5 years. We aren't having any issues now, but we have a bi-yearly service contact (after having so many issues) and the guy was out yesterday and had to replace another $160 part that was wearing out. Is this a scam or normal? I know part of our issues were from an improperly installed system so I am not surprised we are still finding things that need doing, but I am wondering if it's ever going to end...
I'm very irritated with Goodreads for telling me that I read 2 books this year. I didn't realize that I had to add a "read" date in order to have it count for the tally. I know how many books I read this year, but not having it added up on the app is really really bothering me.

Whoa. How old is this kid? I hope they leave soon.
wildrice do you have a humidifier where you sleep? It's made a big difference in how we feel when we wake up. It puts out almost a half a gallon every night when the heater is on.
Hope YH is doing better and you can get out tonight!

I think I finally got got after dodging COVID for 2.75 years. I take public transportation to work five days a week and work in a building of 600 people, and yet it was a family party I didn’t even go to that got me. I’m still testing negative but it seems like there’s no way it’s not COVID, considering the people in my family who’ve tested positive.
mysteriouswife your nephew sounds like he needs about a decade before he's invited back...
wildrice how old is your unit? It's not necessarily a scam, especially if your unit is older. It may also be a sign that it's coming to the end of its life.

IIRC its from 2016 or 2017, though I am not 100% sure the whole unit was replaced then or if it was just part of it. The previous owner seemed to do some combo of DIY and/or hiring a handyman to do HVAC stuff vs an actual HVAC company so a lot of things have been kind of a mess. It sounds like this particular part was just wear and tear (blower capacitor?) so who knows.

Thank you! We do have humidifiers, though we've run them inconsistently so far this year. They are all going now though! I think it's definitely necessary.
Dragging through the days but my dad is still with us. He's more alert today; his brother and sister arrived but he's very in and out. Every time I think I can't cry anymore, there are more tears. But the hospice facility is wonderful. The music therapist learned Nights in White Satin and came to play it to him and it was so beautiful. A nurse recorded his heartbeat to put in a pillow for my mom and another for DS. The art therapist and chaplain sat with DS to make a rock to put in their memorial garden and the staff makes a bed up every night so that my mom can sleep right next to him. I had a dream last night that we were in the room and the moon was outside and I said, do you want to go see it and he said, go with mom, my name. And I woke up crying because at some point soon I'll never hear him say my name again.
DH is out of town for work, just for last night, and it's not nearly as great as it used to be when my kid went to bed much earlier. UGH. And she is a master at delaying bedtime, especially during a school break, so by the time she actually went upstairs to bed, I was also ready to go to bed.
These 1-3 night trips for DH used to be my favorite for catching up on stupid tv shows.

I can't handle Goodreads. It's too slow in searching and finding books and the having to enter dates for everything was too much for me lol I'd get behind and then not be able to get everything in. So I switched to keeping a list on my phone and then every once in awhile I transfer that to a Google sheet.

I know this is the solution, but you can't bulk edit so I would need to do it one at a time. I read 193 books this year, so that's just too much effort.

Oh wow - yeah, I wouldn't either! That's a lot of books!
circa1978, this time at the end is so hard. I'm glad you are able to be with him and that hospice is taking such wonderful care of him and your family.
circa1978, I am thinking of you and your family so much this week. It sounds like the hospice center is absolutely amazing and I'm so thankful they are taking good care of you all. Big hugs to you.

circa1978 I’m so sorry. You’ve been in my thoughts. I like TR suggestion to record something, even just a regular conversation, or ask him to tell you his favorite story or joke! It’ll be bittersweet, but a treasure to have. ❤️
I’m making decent progress on my class. I have 4 papers to write, and I’m on #2 now. I’ve finally found my groove and should be done hopefully by sunday. In fun news, we’re having a few friends over for NYE and I’m just so damn chill about it all. Snacks, drinks, only thing I’m making is fruit purée for non alcoholic Bellinis, and Chex mix because homemade is the tits. The rest is sponsored by Trader Joe’s or the local pizza place! I’m letting the kiddos mostly chill after a few chores today, and DH is golfing.
Also, they are coming over at 9am to start the work for our drainage. Lol it’s gonna be so loud, but I’m looking forward to no lake on our street anymore!!!

circa1978 holding you and your family in my heart. What you’re describing is intensely bittersweet and I’m glad your dad and your family are receiving such wonderful care during such a terrible time. May the coming days be peaceful and rich with love.

No BIL. They divorced. Nephew is 6.
Oh hell no. I thought we were talking about a 2-3 year old here.

circa1978, hugs to you. But glad you can have this time with your dad to say goodbye.
mysteriouswife, if one of my children caused damage and chaos at someone else's house, I would be mortified, pay for the damage, and then leave if my child's behavior didn't improve immediately. Sounds like not inviting them back for a long time is a good idea.
I'm supposed to be working today, but only doing some work in between other things. I dropped off two tubs of the kids' old clothes at Once Upon A Child (consignment shop). Hoping they buy quite a bit so I don't have much to take home with me. Now I'm working at Panera while I wait to have lunch with a friend.
Tomorrow we're having a few friends over for NYE. We're just doing a taco bar, so it will be easy prep. Before that, my dad's family is having their annual get-together in the afternoon. I'm a little sad about it, because one of my uncles (my dad's BIL) isn't doing well health-wise, so I hate the feeling that this could be the last time I see him. (We usually only have family get-togethers on NYE and July 4th.)
circa1978, I’m so sorry for the limbo you’re in. I have a couple of voicemails from my mom that I had saved before she passed away and it’s wonderful to have her voice saved. Highly recommend if you’re able to get that. DH took the boys and a friend of DS1’s skiing today. I’m running a few errands and then doing a puzzle and drinking wine with my bestie. Tonight is ordering in Chinese. It’s going to be awesome!

It could be. There is a part on my AC that I have replaced 3 times (a capacitor) it the AC's 15 year existence. They just wear out in mine. I've also replaced 2 circuit boards in the furnace ($800ish/pop), but having no heat isn't an option.
