I read a lot but just cannot adjust to e-readers. I like having real pages to turn. I spend so much time on screens, reading is my time away from them.

My paperwhite isn’t blue light, so it doesn’t bother me like my computer/phone.
I also have it in dark mode all the time.
But my library is awful and I read 100 books a year. I’m basically stuck with online options. My goal in 2023 is to join a neighboring library system because it’s ridiculous how bad mine is. I’ve even reached my limit on recommending titles.
I was one of those who thought I liked/needed real books. Back when I’d read a book or two a year. I got a kindle, someone told me how to connect to my library and borrow books. Now, I’m around 20-40 books a year. Nothing like some people, but such a difference.
Speaking of books. I’ve been in a WWII historical fiction rut. And I want to branch out. I really like historical fiction, including the steamy Scottish kilt type, but I prefer the stuff a wee bit more accurate. Like, an entraining way to learn something. Any suggestions? Maybe I should go read that monthly-ish reading thread.

I MUCH prefer real books for this reason. A break from screens. I will say I do still use my kindle a lot because sometimes getting ebooks from the library is easier than regular books. My splurge for myself every now and then is actually buying a real book.
My kindle is what got me into reading this year. It’s so easy. It’s also more comfortable to hold in bed than a book. I love it so much.
Also nothing to return to the library. I put it in airplane mode if I won’t finish before it’s due. So easy.
I'm another who much prefers my kindle to actual books. It doesn't even register as a screen to me. I get so annoyed when the books I want aren't available as e-books from the library and I have to decide if I want to either buy the e-book or request the actual physical book. I also read just over 100 books a year and get most of them from the library, so luckily my library system has a decent selection.
I also put on airplane mode if I need a few extra days to finish a book before it gets auto-returned to the library, but if I haven't started it yet when it's due back, I just let it get returned and re-request it. And then on Goodreads the fact that I finished it updates when I turn airplane mode off again and I rate the book. I try to also leave at least a 1-line review of my thoughts on the books I read, otherwise I totally forget what I thought of them almost immediately, and I like to have a reminder in case someone asks me about the book so I can refresh my memory.

I’m so envious of people who make the time to read books. I used to read so much. Now it seems like I watch the same amount of TV instead. When I do get into a book I’ll tear through it, but it’s so rare lately. I went trough a phase of reading and used a kindle but it’s been a paperweight for a while now.

DS has baseball practice tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 😭
I honestly don't know if I would let a strange man in my house. I'm a single mom with two young kids. I'd like to think that I would, in those conditions. I can lock my kids and me I to my room but there are no other separate, secure spaces in my house.
And I used to read exclusively in my kindle but I feel like I've re-discovered real books and I love them. That said, I probably listen more these days to books than actually reading. I walk almost every day, and prefer books over podcasts.
So DS2 had a stomach bug or maybe food poisoning yesterday. He was dry heaving for the first couple of hours of the morning and has been fine ever since. When he stopped getting sick, he asked for food, so we gave him a piece of toast and half a banana. A little while later, he asked DH for more toast, so H gave him some. Later that day, he asked me for more toast. Then he asked for more that evening. All told, he had six pieces of toast yesterday.
When he asked yesterday evening, I laughed and told DH it reminds me of that "yeah toast!" song, so we showed it to him. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHptn_3RyYE
He went downstairs while the bread was toasting and when I called him upstairs, he popped out of the doorway and yelled "YEAH TOAST!" He keeps saying it and it makes me laugh every time. I'm pretty sure DH is super irritated by it. loll

I read like crazy now but when my kids were real little I went through a few years where I barely read. It was like my brain couldn't handle it at all for that period of time.

I flip back and forth between real books and kindle. Right now I’m in a book mode because L is reading a ton of books and I have been reading them afterwards so we can talk about them. She refuses to read on a kindle and I’m not about to stifle a 13yos reading streak.
In other news - H hid our elf on the shelf in his backpack on Christmas Eve. 8yo believer child just accidentally found her. So far we’ve been able to explain it away but man - that was an oops.

I do all my reading on my phone because it’s always with me. And I can read in The dark while I cuddle kids to sleep. Sometimes I think I want an actual kindle but I don’t know if it’s worth it. I have an old nook but it’s pretty much dead. My grandma borrowed it and couldn’t get it to sync with anything new - so it only works for books I downloaded years ago I guess?
I “only” read 53 books this year which is my lowest ever. But it was my first year in a long time where I’ve had a full time job all year?

I recently read The Great Alone and The Four Winds, both by Kristin Hannah, and enjoyed them. I preferred The Great Alone.

The Kindle is a lot easier on the eyes than a phone. That's probably the biggest benefit you would see with it.

I looked through my recent books to make suggestions…but ww2 fiction and slightly smutty stuff set in Scotland was apparently 99% of my reading for 2022
I’m ready for my SIL’s family to leave. My nephew is a menace. He cut DS’ pillow with scissors, broke several toys, and does not listen. H had a coke to Jesus talk with SIL and nothing has changed. H and I agree they can’t come back until he can listen and behave.
I know it's a typo but this has me amused. I imagine it as "even someone with the patience of Jesus, but high on coke, couldn't keep up with this kid's antics. Time to rein it in."

I needed this laugh. Thank you
See, I’m more innocent (lol) but I imagined he was sharing a coke with Jesus. Like in a 50s soda shop lol
