Post cardiac arrest, if the patient is not following commands, the protocol is to do targeted temperature management, what they mention as "hypothermic". Vitals can be normal, either due to med management or patient stability, following a cardiac arrest and the patient still not following commands, thus requiring TTM.

I can not imagine what his mother and family were going through when he collapsed. I am feel for the player that was a part of the hit, no doubt he is going through many emotions.
Damar Hamlin’s toy charity go fund me is up to almost $3 million dollars. Before everything happened it was $2500, I think. Amazing.
This is so unreal. Buffalo has been through it the last year.
People are donating to his charity in droves, in true Bills Mafia fashion. Prior to the game there was less than $10K in the gofundme and now it's up to over $3 million dollars.

Not local to buffalo so I thought I would share that I've heard this link shared on at least 3 of our local radio and tv stations in the sports segment

Bengals fan who was watching from home. I've been crying off and on since it happened. UC is an amazing hospital, but I am terrified about how long they had to do CPR. Bengals and Bills fans are keeping vigil outside the hospital.

oh yes, for sure people are donating nationwide... every fanbase and even non NFL fans. We're all part of the mafia today.
I've been watching ESPN coverage all morning and it's pretty much just the same thing repeating... so I changed it to the Today show and fuck them for replaying the hit and subsequent collapse over and over.

Bills fan who lives in Cincinnati. We were at the game and it was just horrific. No other words to describe it. Seeing the players on the field was unlike anything I’ve seen before. I am praying there is good news today but I am losing hope.

We were watching the game too (I'm in Buffalo) and it was truly the worst thing ever. I hate that anyone is replaying that hit and collapse. :-(
As for the ambulance not leaving - lots of people saying it was best for them to stay where they were until they got a heartbeat back. (Also CPR certified and this is true - you're better off on stable ground than in a rushing ambulance most likely).
I'm also SO relieved that his mom was able to go with them. Apparently she wasn't able to get to the field but security and Bills staff made it happen so she could be there.
In general, I'm just heartbroken, and know it will be a bit of a waiting game until we really have any updates.
Also Roger Goodell is the worst. Apparently he is saying the game needs to be rescheduled within the next 2 days. He can fuck off.

re: the ambulance leaving
they were loading him into the ambulance on the field, and quickly put him back down to do CPR. the waiting for family was after he was in the ambulance (presumably after he had a pulse). there was video or photo, sorry i don't remember which and i'm trying not to look too much, of the ambulance standing as it exited the underbelly of the stadium. that's when they were supposedly waiting for his family.
i obviously understand the comparison to christian eriksson, but he was alert within an hour of being revived. this feels really different, and not in a good way. eriksson's recovery has been miraculous. he played in the world cup!
my gut is that they are not going to announce any reschedule of the game until they know if he's going to live. i genuinely have no idea how football moves forward if he doesn't and truly don't care if football is cancelled. this might be what makes me stop watching. (i have two sons and decided years ago that as long as i am on this earth they will never play tackle football.)

Ugh, I've never been a Goodell fan anyway, but if this is true he is seriously human garbage.
If they’re doing TTM, there won’t be an update until they rewarm him and wake him up. That process is multiple days.
Yes, the lack of updates means nothing right now. He’s sedated and going thru hypothermia protocol, which is several days. 12-24 hrs of cold followed by slow rewarming.
sarahswim, how did you learn when the game was officially postponed? TV showed people leaving and said nothing had been said over the PA. Did your cell phones work ok? (I have found carriers overburdened during big group things like this.)

I’m not sure what is worse.. his family living this on national TV or strangers looking for an update.
There is nothing worse than watching your loved one have CPR and dying before your eyes. Then people you have never met calling wanting an update. My mom pulled through the first time. Didn’t survive the second time.
It’s been less than 24 hours. No one has answers. Doctors are still working to determine what happened. Let his family handle this privately. His PR team and family will update when it’s time.

Those of us that mentioned Eriksson posted last night within a couple of hours of this happening, so things obviously look different today.
I honestly doubt this would change anything about football being played - it will be chalked up to a freak thing that happened. But I agree with you that it can be very difficult to justify continuing to watch football. It is one of the few things that I do regularly that I don't feel aligns with my values very well. It is just too popular and makes too much money that I don't see anything significantly changing anytime soon. They can try to make it safer but it will always be a dangerous sport because that's how it's designed.
I continue to hope for a positive outcome for him. I hate to see this happen to anyone.

While I'm not a Goodell fan, I think this is a horrible rumor going around. Everything that has come from ESPN and other reputable journalists say the game will not be resumed and there was never a "timeline" for if the game should have started again.

oh just to clarify, I totally get the comparison and don’t begrudge anyone for making it. truly.
I was just really hoping we’d get the same good news from the hospital that we got then.

Related, the "5 min resumption of the game" after the ambulance left was speculation by the announcers as that is protocol. The coaches said there was never any talk of resumption of the game while they were on the field.

There was a message on the Jumbotron initially simply saying the game had been temporarily suspended (after the ambulance left and teams were off the field). We were there with our 13 year old. When the guy behind us started screaming that he’d paid money for this game and they’d better come back out and play, my H grabbed us and we left. There was no conscionable way to cheer for a game if they’d decided to play anyway but we decided to leave before the official announcement. I’m assuming there was a second Jumbotron message conveying the cancellation. My phone worked for texting but trying to load Twitter/ESPN for info was really slow. Multiple people texted me that it was officially cancelled after we were outside the stadium itself.
