The very first time it really hit me hard was several years ago (maybe around 2010). We were really busy at work and I said to two younger co-workers, "It's like Lucy and Ethyl in the chocolate factory." And they had NO IDEA what I was talking about.
Recently, it's that my niece turned 30. She feels young for her age sometimes, but still. 30.
Oh, and my older sister is now ready to start receiving Social Security.
Crap. I really AM old.
My BFF at work and I, we refer to ourselves as Lucy and Ethel almost daily because we get into all sorts of crazy ass situations and we just laugh and laugh.
No one knows who we are referring to.
It’s interesting how I Love Lucy seems to have dipped out of popularity and general pop culture as a whole. It wasn’t like it was new when we were kids but we all knew it!
I guess kids today aren’t getting the access to reruns and old shows the way we did.
Damn it, now I'm going to spend all day trying to remember the name of the typing program we used in elementary school. It wasn't Mavis Beacon. All I remember is you got trophies after each level, and there was like a little trophy room that you went to...I think there was a frog? Someone please know what I'm talking about.
I remember Word Munchers...is that it?? It kinda had a frog looking thing.
I don't think so. I googled 90s typing games yesterday and went down a rabbit hole of so many good educational games from my youth, including this, but it's not the one I'm thinking of.

It’s because they aren’t watching much TV at all. Whereas we watched 37 hours of TV a day in the summer (The Price is Right straight to Hey Dude/Salute Your Shorts marathons straight to Full House straight to Nick at Nite) kids/teens now watch You Tube.

i think they're just able to choose anything now, and aren't choosing MASH or I love lucy

I think there is a lack of shared pop culture experiences in general. There are so many more choices now and have been for about 25 years.
90s shows made references to old shows and bands all the time because everyone would have seen them or at least been familiar. Now there are few shows that “everyone” would have seen. Even the most popular ones are way less popular than nearly anything that aired decades ago. Shows got canceled with better ratings than the top streaming shows get now.

I had a couple of colleagues around 25 y.o. who made me realize they're around the same age as some of my nieces and nephews. I could have been their rather young, cool aunt or baby sitter who had sleep overs with ice cream and Hannah Montana
The fact that Blue Clues was on when I started babysitting, and now it's throwback to people in their 20's. I'll always take some iteration of the host telling me he's proud of me, lol.
I have not just nieces and nephews but now Great nieces and nephews.
Same .. my first great niece was born in February. In my mind I'm not old enough to have a great niece. I have a 13, almost 14, year old.
I was a great aunt before I was a mom and I think it's so weird that my SIL (the grandma of the great nephews) thinks this is hilarious and I have no idea why.
I mean I was 39 when I had my kid and she had her daughter when she was 16 and then her daughter had her son when she was about that age so the math does in fact math but I still think it's weird that she finds it so funny?

Not a reference but this one was tough. I noticed my bestie had a FB friend whose photo was just a shirtless set of *very* six-pack abs. Look a little closer ... it's her college-age nephew and I remember when his parents announced they were pregnant. I kind of felt like I needed to take a shower after that.

I was at a leadership team mtg yesterday at my school and we were discussing new hires. The AP that supervises one of the teams I support says, "We hired Luca for our open position." The boss (principal, 50s) starts singing quietly, "My name is Luca..." and I, late 40s, chimed in, equally as quietly, "I live on the second floor..." A couple of team members around us (30s) are all like, "What the hell are you doing?" and boss & I are all like, YOU KNOW, THE SONG, from the 80s, My name is Luca, WTF is wrong with you guys?
Alas, they are young and don't know 80s music as well as we (boss & I) do. Boss & I are old. LOL

I’ve been thinking about this lately. I learned a fair amount of general knowledge about the world by having cable with 25 channels and being “forced” to watch what was on. Now you can pick and choose what to watch of millions of options and you might not even have a shared viewing experience with people in your house, let alone around the water cooler.
We saw matchbox twenty last weekend and it was not very kind of Rob Thomas to remind the audience that Yourself or Someone Like You came out 27 years ago.
I really want to see this concert but no one wants to go with me
What’s your proximity to Atlanta? We’re a Delta hub so I would ALL IN for that GTG!

I watched reruns of "I Love Lucy" growing up in the 80s and 90s. Love(d) that show. In general, I watched most of the 50s/60s rerun shows on Nick-at-Nite, since I wasn't allowed to watch BH 90210, Melrose Place, etc.
When Luke Perry died, some of my younger coworkers had no idea who he was. I was in my feels about that for sure!

Rob Thomas is one of our best rockers! ("rocker" sort of). Matchbox Twenty's concert in Atlanta Atlanta is July 2. Decent tickets are from $65 + rip off fees. Just sayin'! (I'm local-ish!)

goldengirlz or they know Luke Perry from Riverdale.
My guilty pleasure has been the 9021omg podcast because I like to keep that nonsense of celebrities watching and talking about shows going, lol. Them taking about it being appointment TV, meaning you had to make an effort to watch it rather than on demand or streaming. That made me feel sort of old since on-demand has been around for at least 12 years.

It sounds wacky but I think this part of the decline in media literacy and critical thinking skills that we are seeing now.
Netflix is still in the mail! It’s ending in September though. I’m actually sad about it, my husband has subscribed since it was a tiny service in Austin 25 years ago and we still get the discs. It’s been a crucial part of our themed movie marathon parties for almost 20 years. They have so many things that aren’t available on streaming.

Okay so you and my dad are the last two using this service!
I had a coworker mention not to long ago that he doesn’t remember September 11 (he was a year old when it happened) and only knows about it from his high school history class. I was in high school when it happened and I can so clearly remember it I still feel like it was current events.

I was going to say exactly this. We saw them this past Friday and that “27 years ago” line made me want to barf!
My daughter’s parapro is early 20’s. I was talking to her and my daughter about 9/11 and realized that the parapro was born in 2001 so doesn’t remember that day either.

I swear it’s not just us lol
from NPR—Netflix DVD had 145.7 million in revenue last year, which translated into somewhere between 1.1 million and 1.3 million subscribers.
That’s why I was kind of surprised, it seemed like a low key, steady money maker for them and they just made a big deal over it being the 25th anniversary.

My mom JUST returned a DVD that had been sitting on her dining room buffet for SIX YEARS. She officially canceled her account.
I didn’t get my first computer until college. A desktop job with a processing speed so slow it would make your eyes bleed today.
I had a car phone.
I learned to type on a typewriter.
Pretty much this! Apart from never had a car phone and I was at the very end of high school for the computer. I also didn't have a mobile phone or email until my last year of uni.
There are interns/juniors at work that were born after I got together with H, hence they literally could be my children!!
I remember referring to my parents' childhood as the olden days and my parents would say "that is not the olden days!" and now S refers to my childhood as the olden days and I just laugh.
My first "wow, I'm the older person now" moment was 7 years ago. I was interviewing a younger colleague for a role. His resume said he grew up in a beach town and I was like "oh, my parents lived there when I was born. After we moved, we used to go there for drives in the summer. I still remember seeing the wreckage from the fires of '87."
He had no expression on his face and continued to listen to me. That's when it hit me.
Me: "oh, you weren't alive in 1987." Him: "no, I was born in 1989."
yesterday we were swimming and a young woman overheard me talking about where I went to school when I was a kid. She said "I went there!" and I said, "oh wow, when did you graduate?" (the school being an elementary school...) and she said "2014" and I felt my self grow 6 more gray hairs in that moment.
I fancied us similarly aged because in my mind I still look like I am 22.
