I don't understand why Ken is a 40+ year old man and Barbie is in her 30's. In my Barbie world, they were much younger like late teens/early 20's. I also don't get the pink explosion. This is most certainly not the Barbies I played with but some nonsense version.
It’s hard to be a doctor, a teacher, a lawyer, AND an astronaut if you’re only in your 20s!
Ha! I Barbie didn't do all that in the '70's when I played with her. And she wasn't all about pink -- the Barbie camper we had was orange.

She was an astronaut, business executive, college graduate, nurse and a student teacher in the 1960s. In the 70s she was a surgeon, equestrian and an Olympian of several sports.
So I guess at least late 20s? She’s a very busy woman!
I saw one trailer that made me roll my eyes and say "no thanks!" Then we saw a completely different trailer over the weekend and I really want to see it lol

There’s are soooo many trailers and videos floating around. It’s really being pushed to me hardcore.
Shoot even my Candy Crush updated with purple Barbie B pieces!
Barbie has been a cultural icon for over 60 years. I can't imagine it was that hard an idea to pitch. My daughter and I are really excited to see this movie. it looks really fun. Separately we're excited for theater Camp, and DH and I are looking forward to Oppenheimer. All very different movies, but they look good and speak to varied interests.
Ryan Gosling has said he was inspired by walking out to his backyard and seeing Ken face down in the mud. He decided that he needed to help tell this guy’s story and be a part of this movie.
I never really played with barbies and find the cartoon mind numbing. I'm hoping this is something very different given who is involved. I plan to see it
What I want to know is why there are all these memes containing Oppenheimer and Barbie together.
whut
I also don't get it. One is a dark drama/documentary about the man who created the atomic bombs, and the other is pure fluff. Maybe they're thinking people will use Barbie as a palette cleanser?
I need the Simpson’s “that’s the joke” gif here. It’s the juxtaposition that makes it funny.
We had a team at quizzo this week named “I’m a Barbie girl in an Oppenheimer world” lol. It’s just silliness.

Yeah. It is like Wednesday and Enid. The contrast between the two.

I think that's partly the point. They both seem fairly gender specific, and there are a lot of millennial and gen Zers saying, "No, I can be interested in both of these things. I contain multitudes."

An astronaut before there were any women who were actual astronauts.
Anyway, given that Barbie is SO iconic, it probably wasn't a hard sell. Movies love basing summer blockbusters on a known quantity (see: Indiana Jones 5 and Mission Impossible 9 or whatever). But then Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach getting a hold of it and flipping it on its head? Genius.

This reminds me of going to McDonalds or another fast food joint "do you want a boy or girl toy?" I also had a LOT of Barbie toys from McDonalds (and Little Mermaid) that I played with in the bathtub ::whispers:: until I was like 12 or something, add that to the spreadsheet, lol.
(My) Barbie also won gold in the '96 (?) Olympics when they had the MAG 7 who I LOOOOVED. My Barbie did a lot of gymnastics.
Thanks to this thread my poor husband keeps hearing about my lack of Barbie play sets and just a few Barbies (better than none I know.) I spent too much time searching Amazon to see if something is rather cheap to get for my birthday. Maybe just seeing the movie should be enough.

I just bought a ticket and both theatres for the time slot I am going to are almost sold out. I think it looks fun and have heard it is not for children.
I loved Barbies because they were the only non-baby dolls I had access to as a kid. I was never interested in babies or pretending to be a parent or homemaker (play kitchens, doll houses, etc.) so I loved Barbies and Playmobile that had teen and adult characters and fun accessories. Not surprisingly, I'm a childfree-4-lyfer and still like Barbie and dressing up!

Me too! Barbies and stuffed animals. It should surprised nobody that I don't have kids but do have pets. Although Barbie was a lot more ambitious about her career than I have been, lol.
I wrote a 15 page paper on Barbie in college (called "Barbie and the Changing Face of Feminism in the United States"). Her history is really interesting.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
This movie looks like nothing but a ton of fun, and exactly how I (age 44) and every single one of my friends played with our Barbies. It's Barbie people, take it for exactly what it is. She could be anything and everything, she's full on pink glitter/sparkle/glam, she doesn't live in reality, and Ken is an accessory who you had to negotiate taking turns playing, because no one actually wanted to be him. You never needed more than one Ken, but you most DEFINITELY wanted more than one Barbie. Wherever the plot goes, I'll take it, because the all the Barbie World details, including the marker faced chopped hair Barbie my sister had, are in this movie, and it looks SO FUN.
