I cannot wait to tell my therapist about this Wednesday, movie is Friday.
I played with Barbies as a kid like crazy. I had the camper and the pool. The camper even had a a shower I could put water in! I couldn’t afford the dream house so I made my own with shoeboxes. I played with my shoe box dream house for years. I wanted it all just like Barbie. career, a guy, kids, a house, lots of trips. I know that’s so cliche. Yes there is a lot wrong with the Barbie paradigm and I can’t wait to see how they show us. My life has had a lot of pain but I’ve also had a lot of good things.
We have a big trip on Monday and DD can’t go with me Friday because of a swim meet, so I got one solo ticket for me Friday matinee. I need to remember at 48, it’s still good to “date” myself and I don’t need to put energy into scheduling it as a girls night. My DH and 18 year old DS would not like it—so here I go.

This. These nostalgic pieces are sometimes healing our inner child. Barbie was a bad ass and for many little girls an escape from a less than ideal home life reality.
My kids didn't like Barbies, but they'll humor me and come watch it.
There is also another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie coming out the beginning of Aug. My nostalgia hearts sings!
Yeeeeesss, I'm so excited for that one too. The TMNT often interacted with my Barbies, as did the Ghostbusters.
Funny story, my grandparents used to have a 4th of July party every year, and one of their friends approached my mom and was SO impressed with my older brother who was 5 at the time. He just could not believe my brother knew about classical artists at his age. My mom smiled and nodded and waited for the man to go away before he figured out my brother was definitely talking about Ninja Turtles, not Leonardo DaVinci.
My nana thought it was hysterical later on, but she said she wasn't going to tell her friend anything she's just going to let him think my brothers a prodigy 🤣
I won’t go see it in the theater because I don’t go to the theater much these days, but I will totally watch it when it streams. I hates my Barbies as a kid and cut their hair and “colored” it with crayola markers. But I live a city away from Mattel and work in nonprofit and the Barbie team (and all of Mattel honestly) has always been so supportive of local kids charities. I’m glad the movie, and Barbie, is getting such fun press.
Kate McKinnon’s Barbie character has the cut hair and marker on her face!
I hope they have the Barbie “peaches and cream” outfit at some point because my sister and I fought mercilessly over that Barbie
My parents couldn't afford to buy me an army of Barbies, but the Peaches and Cream was one of the few I had and I freaking loved that doll. I hope that one doesn't get lost among all the pink!
My youngest is a huge Barbie fan and even my older one who never really cared for Barbies is intrigued by the trailer, so we're definitely going to see it. I don't care about Ryan Gosling Ken, I want to see Simu Liu Ken!
I don’t remember which Barbies I had (all hand me downs from my sister- so original clothes were long gone) but I do remember we had an 80’s dream house with the elevator that was in that video for 2 seconds at the end. We also had a jacuzzi tub that you could pump to make bubbles. And a pink corvette that I think was actually “mine”. I had those to play with and Legos. That was it, so I basically had to love Barbie. I tried hard with DD but she had 835 toys to choose from so it never stuck. Nothing did with my kids honestly. She is however very excited to see the movie. I originally told her to find some friends, but now I’m intrigued!
A lot of people have mentioned the Peaches and Cream Barbie.
I was never a Barbie girl - what made this one so special/coveted? Was it her dress or something else?
I think it was a cute dress and came out when a lot of older millennials were at peak Barbie age so it’s remembered very vividly. Commercials for it played constantly. Tiffani Amber Theissen was in one. It was a very popular doll.

Yes I did NOT have a happy childhood so my Barbies were my escape. I could make the Barbie and Ken get along and not fight so much

Due to this thread I was waxing poetic about my few years loving barbie. I had a Christmas present that was a pink ball gown with glow in the dark stars that you could concert to a purse. And a matching parasol.
I still probably won't see the movie, but I am not usually a movie goer and definitely not where I live.

I still have this Barbie, along with some of the others from the late 80's/early 90's.
I can't stop reading this thread. I watched the video that was posted with Margot Robbie giving the tour of the set, and I have to admit, all the details were cool and had me all nostalgic. My older cousin had the hot-tub toy that you could fill with water and push a button and make bubbles with, and that thing was our favorite toy for a solid year and we made such a mess with that thing. Every time she said 'there's no water in Barbie land' I was like, sometimes there is!
But then I watched the official trailer again, and as soon as Barbie leaves Barbie World for the Real World, I was like nope, and I had to actually turn it off before the end of the trailer. It's just not for me. I would totally watch a whole cheesy movie set in Barbie World though!
My great aunt gave me and my sister a set of original Barbies from the 50s...I'd like to have those back. I loved playing with Barbies, honestly. The movie will be pure nostalgic fun for me.

I forgot about glow in the dark star Barbie. I never had one, but always wanted one.
My friends grandmother made these beautiful Barbie cakes that had a doll in the middle, and the cake looked like a huge gown.
This made me remember when my parents got me ice skating Barbie, because I did a year of skate lessons, and skates at the lake. They had me re-purpose a huge mirror as the ice. I also still have one copy of a Barbie comic book that was well read. Clearly even without a dream house or playset my family gave Matel a LOT of money.
I think there's also a whole episode of Toys that Made us (Netflix) on Barbie. The My Little Pony one is really good too.
I'm late to this party, but I wasn't really into Barbie, I was a My Little Pony girl all the way down. I had like 2-3 generic KMart Faux Barbies, Peaches and Cream Barbie, and like over a hundred MLPs. Barbie couldn't ride a Pony, and I had more fun playing with my stuffed animals, so I don't have a strong nostalgia drive to see this movie. But I do think it looks funny, so I'll watch it when it comes to streaming. My guess is that since it's produced by Warner Bros. it will come to HBO in a couple of months.
Also, to whoever said you only needed one Ken, you didn't need a Ken at all if you could steal a friend's brother's GI Joe. LOL!
I wasn't into Barbie either, but now I wonder if that was because I truly didn't want one or because my mother thought they were sexist and refused to buy me any. I'm questioning my entire childhood likes and dislikes now.
I did have a couple of troll dolls I would bring over to my cousin's house and we'd try to stuff them into Barbie clothes.
We went to the movies today (Indiana Jones) and they had the Barbie and Oppenheimer movie posters right across from one another in the hallway. DS 2 kept talking about "Barbieheimer" and I finally had to break it to him that Oppenheimer is a very, very rated R movie (there's supposed to be a really long sex scene?) and he's not going to get to see it.
A lot of people have mentioned the Peaches and Cream Barbie.

I loved my Peaches and Cream Barbie but also had the glow in the dark one (and her canopy bed!) But my favorite ever was Barbie's friend PJ, who had a satin dress that looked like flower petals and smelled like roses. I have a rose perfume I bought because of that nostalgia. (I also liked Theresa because she had dark hair like me.)
I have a theory that it's not as fun to play with Barbie now because her clothes suck. Why would you want to dress her in jean capris and a tank top? Anyone can wear that! The 80s gowns were what dreams were made of.

I finally saw it in our rinky dink 2 screen theater mostly because my partner was super excited.
I thought it was entertaining and was even more amused everytime I pictured a conservative head exploding.
What was interesting was that there were a few actual lol moments, and I was the sole laugher. A lot apparently did not translate to the local audience. Which made me probably more amused thinking their likely wtf is this American weirdness thoughts, and it wasn't a language issue as subtitles were in 2 languages plus most are fluent in English. Whole families, boys and girls, in bright pink, including hijab, which made me smile.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I am going for the second time tonight with my family. I went on a whim by myself last week and loved it. So much fun. I love all the hype around it. Fun fun fun
My 15 year old son saw it last night with friends and he loved it. Love the messaging. Loved all the clever jokes and music. Big fan of the "I'm just Ken" song.
One of my favorite memories is when my babysitter would bring her SUITCASE of barbies over. SO many outfits. So many barbies. It was a huge treat. And so clever of her because I am certain she didn't have to do anything because I was just enthralled lol.
Also we have two movie theaters in town. The normal Marcus theater and then a cool independent type place. Both have been sold out non-stop for this movie. I had to buy my family of four tickets like 5 days in advance. And this is 10 days into the movie being available.
Clearly this was an itch people needed scratched. Or we are all just desperate for joy.
I took my 10 year old DD last week and we both loved it!! I went in thinking it would be over the top cheesy (which parts definitely were) but it felt light, funny and entertaining but also a lot of serious female messaging. Loved all the characters and references to 80s and 90s nostalgia. I’d for sure recommend seeing it!
Everyone I know is dying to see it but I'm skipping it. I'm just not excited about it. I didn't even like Barbie when I was little. I was more of a Jem fan, lol.
I am dying to see it. Would a 6 year old be good for it? I’m not overly concerned because everything I’ve read that’s questionable would likely go over her head.
She’s been non stop watching Barbie cartoons and playing with hers for the past week so I know she’d be into it.
Her last birthday party was Barbie - we made a life size “Barbie box” for people to pose in. It was so fun!

I don't think it's so much that it's inappropriate for a 6 year old (the dolls mention not having a penis or vagina once, and there's one bleeped curse word). I think it's more that the themes of self-actualization and feminism vs patriarchy and vocabulary are such that kids under 9 or so might find it hard to follow and boring.
