Also, based on nothing more then anecdotes I think you're most likely to get food poisoning from salad. And no one goes around warning about that.
Yes, this is what I learned in my infectious disease epidemiology course in grad school. It's (almost) always the fresh, uncooked produce.
Which I had already learned from my experience getting E. coli in Costa Rica. I do not eat uncooked produce on vacation in many places anymore.
Anyway. I'm team raw cookie dough. I like the theory above about who can eat the chicken. For all my stomach disorders, I have never experienced food poisoning. It was probably all the cookie dough I ate as a child. 😂
I love raw cookie dough and brownie batter. I eat both any time I cook them. As far as I know, I’ve never gotten sick.
I don’t volunteer raw batter to my kids but I wouldn’t be mad if they snuck some. They both know it’s a risk though, and aren’t yet willing to risk the barfs. So…more for me!
Wait, what’s in raw flour that will make you sick?
I don’t feel like googling right now
It’s considered raw, which means it hasn’t been treated for E. coli, salmonella, etc. The flour can get contaminated in the field or in the processing.

I have eaten raw cookie dough my entire life and been fine. When my kids were really tiny I didn’t let them have any, but now at 11 and 7 I let them partake.

Yes! I always say that! The real bad guy out there is lettuce! Lol
Years ago I was a grocery store manager and when I took my food safety certification class we were told that the pre-made bagged salad mix and the pre-cut watermelon are the two food items most likely to cause food borne illness. So clearly the real issue here is that we all need to eat MORE cookie dough.
LOL, that I know this about you! I was like, oh, TR loves brownie batter when I read the post.
I also love dough/batter, etc. I also remember taking small bites of raw ground meat as a kid and liking it, so maybe I’m not the person to consult on this.
LOL. I have been known to mix up some brownies for the main purpose of eating the batter. I don’t eat, like, a whole box. But it’s not just licking the bowl either 🤣
I was going to say, I have made a batch of brownie batter, just to eat the batter. I couldn’t finish it because I felt sick, but not actually sick like the question, just I ate too much sick.
Before going Gluten Free I would often buy tube of pre-made cookie dough and just eat it raw. I've never gotten sick from doing it, but do understand the risk, I just never cared LOL

That’s my dads treat every night. He’s 77 and has raw cookie dough as he watches television. He is not a baker so it’s the premade kind. Yes I eat it too—just not a sweet tooth overall

Given that I recently posted about having dried lung for a bar snack, which I later learned isn't even allowed in the states, I'm gonna guess you know where I stand. If it tastes good I'm gonna eat it and ask questions later. It's the family way, and the youngest grandparent to die was 88. I think we're good
Also, it usually takes at least 24 hr for food illness to hit. So we're really bad at making those associations of I ate there and am now sick.

Ok this i can actually address. Even unopened flour will sprout bugs if kept at a certain temp. Americans rarely see that inside. I first encountered it in Hawaii where inside temp was often in mid 90s (no a/c). Harmless little bugs, won't make you sick, but it's ick factor.
Can confirm the salad risk. I have food poisoning a few times--once from McDonald's, once from a taco at a food festival, and the last time was from a salad at a restaurant. It was so bad. It was 5 years ago and I honestly still mostly stay away from salads.
I've eaten a large amount of cookie dough in my life. The only time I ever got sick was because I had used duck eggs. I don't think that was food poisoning though-- duck meat makes me sick so presumably whatever doesn't agree with me is also present in the raw eggs. (Weirdly, cooked duck eggs are fine)
I had no idea allergies could be … well I guess all allergies are species-specific. If eating the uncooked dough with duck eggs made you sick, were you Okay eating the fully cooked cookies made with duck eggs?

When we lived in the tropics we stopped our floor in the freezer for this very reason.

I can't remember if I actually ate them-- pretty sure they didn't look good after I got sick on the dough LOL.
But we have pet ducks and I've eaten the eggs cooked a few times (usually we give them away) and it was OK.
I have definitely gotten sick any time I ate duck meat though, which is why I thought the issue was the eggs being from ducks vs them being raw.

What?
Yes you can get bugs in flour, but no, that’s not the safety issue.
Weird, true story: in middle school science class we were given a couple substances and had to run little tests and try to guess what they were. Whispers started going around the class that one of them was cake mix, because it smelled like it. So, of course, some of us started tasting it, and it really did taste like cake mix. The teacher ended up yelling at us and telling us it was wallpaper paste. I think he said that just to scare us, because you really shouldn’t be eating an unknown substance, but to this day I’m not sure because I’ve never tasted wallpaper paste so maybe it does taste like cake batter?

Can I answer I have and got sick? It wasn’t from the actual dough itself but overindulging. We have cookie dough shops here. We occasionally stop in to grab a scoop or two to share over a few days.
I don’t because I am worried about getting sick, and I have passed that fear on to my children. This poll is making me think I need to let them eat some raw dough…

You can put your flour for your recipe in the oven beforehand for a bit. I think it’s a few minutes at 350 or 325 that will take care of the rawness. Lots of cooking blogs out there have info on how to do it.
Then you and your kids can enjoy the “raw” dough without having to worry about the flour rawness.
If you’re worried about eggs, too, I’m sure there’s a ton out there about egg-free baking.
In what I think was actually my very first binge-eating event, my mom left 7YO me alone with a bowl of peanut butter cookie dough while she went to change my baby brother's diaper. I ate it until I barfed. I don't think it had anything to do with raw eggs or flour. I pretty much never ate peanut butter cookies again but I had no problem eating chocolate chip cookie dough from then on out.
