I can't NOT taste the dough or batter. It calls to me! I've never gotten sick so I will KOKO.
We used to have a bakery local to us that sold cookie dough like ice cream and until they opened and informed folks it was heat treated flour I never knew any concerns about flour.
Ok this i can actually address. Even unopened flour will sprout bugs if kept at a certain temp. Americans rarely see that inside. I first encountered it in Hawaii where inside temp was often in mid 90s (no a/c). Harmless little bugs, won't make you sick, but it's ick factor.
When we lived in the tropics we stopped our floor in the freezer for this very reason.
you did that right. I would store in the freezer for a day. I still didn't make it in occasionally but that was the best work
I eat cookie dough, brownie batter, cake batter, etc. And not just a little taste lol and I haven’t gotten sick yet.
LOL, that I know this about you! I was like, oh, TR loves brownie batter when I read the post.
I also love dough/batter, etc. I also remember taking small bites of raw ground meat as a kid and liking it, so maybe I’m not the person to consult on this.
My mom used to make little pinches of raw hamburger and season them with salt and pepper and she and my brother would eat them on the nights she made hamburgers for dinner. I can remember trying one, and thinking it was gross (because of the flavor, not because it was raw).
That being said, a beef tartar burger with smoky cheese was hands down one of the best things we ate in Barcelona, so I won't so no to all raw beef. LOL!
But also, I like the way TR thinks with making up brownie batter just to eat. Brownie batter is delicious, and I definitely have left more batter in the bowl when making brownies just so I could have extra when licking the bowl. And I'll make up cookie dough with no intention of making cookies.
My only times getting actual food poisoning have been from restaurants, and the culprit is usually chicken, and once, improperly heated soup.
I don’t because I am worried about getting sick, and I have passed that fear on to my children. This poll is making me think I need to let them eat some raw dough…
You can put your flour for your recipe in the oven beforehand for a bit. I think it’s a few minutes at 350 or 325 that will take care of the rawness. Lots of cooking blogs out there have info on how to do it.
Then you and your kids can enjoy the “raw” dough without having to worry about the flour rawness.
If you’re worried about eggs, too, I’m sure there’s a ton out there about egg-free baking.
I was curious if there were ways to heat-treat the flour to make it safe to eat, so did some googling. The FDA website about flour says to not try heat treating it at home since you can't be sure it's killing everything. That said, if I were concerned about the risk of raw flour, I'd heat it according to info on blogs and call it good.
I've also heard that if eggs are kept refrigerated, the risk of there being enough salmonella in them to make you sick is low. But I don't remember where I heard that.
Anyway, I've always eaten raw dough and batter (except anything with yeast). I love cookie dough, cake and brownie batter, biscuit dough, waffle/pancake batter.
The only time I know of that I've had food poisoning was bad sour cream at a Mexican restaurant. My MIL and I both had the same main dish, but my SIL and I were the only ones that ate sour cream, and we both ended up with pretty violent symptoms.
The texture is all off. I just realized I don’t even like rolling the dough so I’m not sure it would ever cross my mind to eat it. I love cookies, worked at a cookie shop in HS and make cookies with my kids a ton- just not eating the dough.

The very idea that someone would describe cookie dough the way I'd describe raw chicken is just...not a human experience I'd expect. YOU GUYS!

I’m ok being an outcast on this one. More warm cookies for me!

I pace myself on cookie dough so that I can still eat some warm cookies.
This. I also used to freeze at least half of my dough in cookie sized balls so that I could either eat them raw/frozen or cook up just 1-2 and have them nice and melty and fresh.
DH has a friend that makes us the best desserts, but especially chocolate chip cookies - the best I've had in my life, so I've stopped making them, since mine just don't compare. This thread makes me realize I need to request that he also bring me frozen dough so that I can have them whenever I want.
Before they stopped selling it recently, I would buy the Papa Murphy’s cookie dough just to eat raw. I don’t think I’ve ever baked an actual cookie from it. I also love to eat homemade dough/batter at multiple stages in the process, the butter/sugar/eggs stage for chocolate chip cookies is the best IMO.

Yes! To me it’s like it’s clay or Play-doh until it’s baked. It exists but I have no urge to eat it.
Ngl I feel a bit bullied by the non cookie dough eaters.
They’ve basically said we’re wet garbage eaters.
No, people who eat soggy baked goods are the wet garbage eaters. The thought of dunking cookies in milk makes me want to gag. And I never have ice cream with cake because I don’t want my cake to be soggy.

Dough and batter are my guilty pleasures. I’ve eaten them for 42 years and plan to continue until I die and if I die from dough poisoning it will be worth it.
I have gotten food poisoning from El Pollo Loco and a Baskin Robbins milkshake and survived so I guess I figure food poisoning will cause a bad day but probably not kill me.
Never gotten sick from it, even from scratch where I KNOW there are raw eggs. When I was a kid my mom would let me have 1 tsp max when making cookies and I thought that the best thing about being a grown up would be eating an entire tube by myself.

Dunking cookies is another thing I would have never thought anyone did without commercials. No thank you.
When I was in high school, we could buy a roll of the pillsbury cookie dough from the snack shack (this was boarding and day school) and we would just eat it raw and never once got sick from it.
This brings back memories of making brownie mix and a bunch of us eating out of a communal bowl. We were 23/24 and celebrating one friends' move into her very first studio apt... no roommate.
I grew up eating/sneaking dough/batter from sugar cookies. My family made those at least every other month.
