I say “jone”, but I believe this is a name from other cultures than can be pronounced with 2 syllables. That’s definitely much more rare for me personally to encounter; it’s always JONE.
Lol, my post is a vent disguised as a poll. I know how to say this name -it’s my mother’s name. Every damn call I get for her, they say it wrong and I wondered if it was generally not common knowledge or if phone sales people are just stupid! (TIC, my husband does phone sales.)
and I see I'm the only one that would say two syllables first. But I have more than one relative with that name.
I work with someone (male) with this pronunciation, but every other “Joan” I’ve met has used the more common pronunciation (and been female), so that’s what I selected in the poll.

Thank you, GBCN, for the validation!
My mother is Joan. I'm her POA and I get so many calls for her, both legit calls, like doctor's offices, pharmacy, etc, and also telemarketing and they ALL say "Jo-ann!" I don't think one person has ever said Joan, unless they acutally know her. It drives me nuts! Honestly, I could understand a Spanish pronunciation, but Jo-ann is just wrong, lol. (Although from this sample is sounds like there may be one lady named Jo-ann going around spelling it "Joan.") Humana called (again) prior to this poll and kept asking for "Miss Jo-Ann" and it was grating on me. I usually don't answer but with so much stuff for her, I can't always tell if it's going to be a telemarketer. The Humana people are the most infuriating becuase they aren't actually Humana but "calling on behalf of Humana" and so by the time I get to the end of it, and establish that her name is JOAN, not JOANN and I have POA, they tell me they aren't actually Humana and they don't have my POA on file becuase they aren't Humana and they need to talk to Jo-ann to get permission to speak to me! FFS. JOAN has Alzheimer's and I'm as good as you're going to get. You aren't getting Joan or Jo-ann, lady!

This is my grandma's name, and I one time answered the phone at her house and she heard me say "you have the wrong number" and hang up. She knew right away someone had asked for "Joann", so you're not alone!

It's so weird that literally everyone in here knows how to pronounce it and yet nobody knows how "in the wild!"

Dealing with aging parent stuff is so frustrating.
It’s definitely a name that’s fallen out of fashion, and had its peak decades ago. Most of us are the kids of that generation (and more educated in general.)
If a telemarketer is young, or working out of a call center outside the U.S., it’s not that shocking that people would get tripped up.

Bingo. It's not that I can't actually understand how/why people don't know it. But it's literally the last part of her identity that *she* still knows. She can't tell you what day it is, what city or state we are in. She doesn't know she has children. She doesn't know I'm her daughter. But if you ask her her name, she will tell you "Joan." It's all she has left.

So I asked my mom about this today and she said that my grandparents wanted to name my aunt Joann but also had (?) to give her the name of a saint and so it's Joan pronounced Joann? I don't know 🤷🏻♀️.
