I signed up for a tournament in Philly this weekend. My event is 2:30pm, so I’m going to do it as a day trip (~2 hour drive). I do not want people to know. Like, I asked my coach if I could borrow equipment for the weekend, with a “please don’t ask why or make anything if this.” There are two fencer friends that know. Because I do not want attention or expectations. My goal is to not DFL. Anything higher that 10 (or of 11) will be a win. 😂 I feel like I am weird because I do *not* like encouragement, good lucks, and cheering. Like a “you can do it” scream gets an anger reaction from me. So yeah… I much prefer to just do something and get accolades, versus having expectations placed on me.
And, I’m totally nervous about logistics. I also kind of want someone to hold my hand through the shit like registration and finding the right spot. But, see above.
In short, I’m impossible.
This is generally how I handle my dog sport competitions. I try to go far enough from home that it's less likely I will know people, but short enough that I can do it as a day trip. I rarely tell anyone before I compete. It's much less pressure to do it on my own.
Speaking of... I found out this morning that I got a spot in a competition in Maryland next month. I normally don't travel that far, but the venue is really unusual. I have until Saturday to commit or lose my spot. I would 100% commit if I knew I'd have my new car for the trip. Complicating things, I have a competition in NY 2 days later, so I'd probably plan to find 1 place to stay for 3 nights (probably in PA somewhere between the 2 locations). I'm also not sure this is a good use of money since I'm buying a new car.... Getting in to the competition is a lottery. I've been trying to get in at this location since 2019 and I've never gotten a spot before. I'm very conflicted on if I should accept the spot or not. If I accept and cancel, I may not get a refund depending on when. The timing with the new car is tight if it comes in on time, but I know many posters have recently reported cars being delayed.
I’m glad I’m not alone. I think you are right about it being the pressure.
Maryland to NY with a quick turnaround does seem tight. But, Maryland welcomes you if you come. Feel free to ask logistical advice.

I was washing dishes last night and the top shelf of my cabinet was a little wobbly for some reason. That resulted in my very heavy meat tenderizer falling at max speed on to the floor, except my foot was also on the floor also. it's very black and blue and swollen. But I figure I can still wiggle my toes, so nothing is broken.
In other news STBXH is causing all kinds of problems between my boyfriend and I.
I fucking hate it. STBXH found him on face book and started shit talking. and now my boyfriend is upset with me.
all I can do is fucking cry day in and out. I woke up crying today. I cried all damn morning and I'm sitting here at work trying like hell to keep it together.
rubytue , you are going to be 10 minutes away from me It is actually about 45 minutes outside of Philly, and it's so dumb that they call it the Philly Expo Center. There is also an outlet mall near me called Philadelphia Premium Outlets which is even further from the city.
rubytue, I live near the expo and have been there quite a few times…it will likely be very clearly marked which hall you need to go to. They’re usually good about having signs on the road leading to the expo stating which halls have which expos, and the outside of the building is clearly marked with hall designations (A,B,C, etc.). The parking lot is a little confusing, but the expo center itself is really clearly laid out. I totally get the stressing about it, because I’m the same way, but I promise it’s easy to navigate once you’re there!

It would be drive down Thurs, compete in MD on Fri, Saturday off, compete in NY on Sunday, drive home at the end of the day. The NY competition would normally be a day trip for me (~3 hour drive, been to this location many times). I found an Airbnb about halfway between the two competition sites in PA with a fully fenced yard, but it's new and doesn't have any pet-related reviews. I feel like the responsible decision is to decline MD and try again in the spring... but I really wanna go.
bears I have mixtiles and love them! I got a set of 3 large ones, but I like them so much that I think I'm going to do a set of smaller ones for the stairway.

@sameoldstory, I'm sorry you are going through that. All Ican offer is commiseration. STBXH just spent a week in a behavioral center for the same reason. I offered for him to come by and have dinner with the kids last night. It's been weeks since he has seen them. He declined and told me I was a rotten monster of a person. So yeah fun times. Commiseration, It's all I have.

helpshareplease so sorry you're dealing with all of that and ouch about your toe. Can you BF just block him so he can't contact him again? Are you seeing a therapist to help you work through all of this?
Any tips on using a curling wand on the back of your head? I feel like my arms don't bend in a way to make it work lol.
My general thought is that the back of my head is none of my business.
I just pull a piece up and to the side to curl it. I also use a beachwaver because the ability to use a curling wand is not within my learning capabilities.

I'm shaking my head after a convo with a coworker this morning, who is a clinical provider. She told me she needs to cancel her patients for tomorrow and sorry for the short notice. I said wow, alright, is everything ok? She goes on to tell me that her H tested positive for Covid yesterday, the first time for either of them. They were super careful and avoided going out in public for a long time. But now he has it and he's still GOING TO WORK and just wearing an N-95. He's a vet and is having the owners wait in the waiting room while he examines the animals. He hasn't called out sick once in his 23 year career wtf. So last night she was wearing a mask in the house and he refused to wear one. She's mad at him and tired of sleeping on the couch so she's taking off to their vacation house after work today to get away from him and his Covid. So much wrong here!
@sameoldstory , arielroux , Thanks! Really, I’m over thinking this whole thing. It’s just, the first one in 30 years. Well, I did do a small tournament in May, where I did DFL 😂, but it was at my club. So I knew things like, where the strips were. And that there were only 3 in a small area. Oh,and we didn’t have an equipment check.
We went from 90 degrees the other day to today being a high of 70. My sinuses HATE those big swings. But it did feel good to turn off the AC.
The other day I had to pick my kid up from school almost 2 hours early. There were already folks there lining up to pick up their kids! 2 hours early does not compute for me and feels like a waste of time, there is now way that saves any time because the waiting in line at pick up time wouldn't take anywhere close to that amount of time. Now sure there might have been a person or 2 that was doing something near school and didn't want to drive home and then drive back but our district is not that big geographically nor is our town a heavy traffic area. I just don't get it. Of course folks can do what they want and spend their time how they want but I don't get it.
I want to eat something good for lunch since it's my WFH day but I can't decide what that might be.

I'm old school and use a curling iron but what I do is section my hair off, first pulling it half up into a knot on top of my head and I do the back underneath section. Then I take it down in quarter sections and when I get to the pieces the will lie in the back I just brush them up, grab with the curler and curl. I don't know if that makes sense but sectioning helps.
bex1973 , noodleoo , thanks, I just threw it up on FB Marketplace. Fingers crossed!
ETA: one definite scammer (lol no, I'm not going to send a google voice verification code) and another that I didn't even respond to because I'm guessing it's the same, but I do have someone who wants to pick up today that I think may be an actual person.

helpshareplease, I don't get why your BF is mad at you. You didn't ask your Ex to be an asshole. That seems to be a bit of an asshole move on your BF's part - be mad at the Ex.

You're boyfriend is immature and kind of an asshole, hth!
Why didn't he just immediately block him and move on with his life? Like an adult. And he's upset with YOU? No. Get rid of him.
We made it 4 whole school days before DS fell sick.
A lot of the schools around me closed for today's heat (schools typically don't have AC here and its supposed to get to 95*). Ours is open and I sent the non-sick kid. Good luck DD! Drink water!
Oh no! Just 4 days? That stinks. I’m sorry. We got the email about recess being inside today because of the heat. I really don’t get this weather.

This! It's not like you told STBX to stalk him on Facebook, wtf.
Third day of school and Big Kid's middle school is closing early for "HVAC Issues". In other words the air conditioning broke and it's going to hit 94 this afternoon (with a solid 50% humidity and storms forecast so that will rise). Woo? Lets see if she remembers to bring home her cello. It went to school day 1 and she keeps "forgetting" to bring it home.

We have the same temps all but one school in our town have no AC. Figures the school we moved away from is the one with AC! DD said all they have is one fan in her classroom. So far there's been no talk of cancelling anything though.
I discovered a couple of weeks ago that the other attorney on one of my cases went to the high school next to mine and I think graduated the same year I did. By some weird twist of facts, the names of our two high schools are also words that apply to the case and both happen to be included in something I need to file. As it is, it just so happens that my filing has more mentions of my high school word than his. Ha, take that!
So random. 🤣
I randomly ran into a woman who is currently working at the school/camp where I worked 20 years ago. She mentioned the name of the place in conversation with someone else and my head whipped around and I went, "Wait, [School] in [adjacent county]". Completely random encounter.
I have an Ikea futon in good shape that we no longer need, and I can NOT figure out a way to get rid of it. I've posted it on Buy Nothing twice and Nextdoor once with no takers, and I can't find anywhere local to donate it. I hate to throw away a functional piece of furniture, but I don't have a place for it and can't store it indefinitely. So frustrating.
We did get all of the extra stuff out of the family room last night. I still have two closets to clear out to get everything truly put away, but my house feels way less stressful today.
When I was getting rid of stuff recently the most reliable response was from my Craigslist postings. Facebook and nextdoor didn't get anything.
Very random but you never know so I'm asking. My mom bought a new SUV and we took her old one for me to commute in. The only issue is that although my dad was fanatic about other kinds of maintenance, I think it never occurred to them that they could/should update the OS on the infotainment/navigation system. It's $169 plus the dealer cost to install it, so I'm guessing we'd net out around $300ish. Is it worth it? The current interface is so outdated looking, but I'm not sure if the new one is any better, or if it's possible to put in an entirely new system. It's an Rx350 and Lexus Enform if anyone happens to have specific knowledge. I think Lexus has stopped using that system, so this would be the last update available.

bears, a similar thing happened when my DD got her period at 11. I was not prepared, and had to run out to the store immediately to get her supplies. I blame DH's genes on her early (to me) period, because I didn't get my period until I was 13 (and my mom and sister were both 12). I also felt mom guilt for not being prepared. My DD also took it very well.
I just got done with the first of three dental appointments to deal with some tooth issues. I took the whole day off work, so now all I have to do is sit around and wait for feeling to return to the right half of my face. I was so anxious about the appointment, but now I'm almost wishing I'd done a half day and then gone in because I feel silly for taking a whole day when the procedure only took an hour.

So, I’ve never updated mine. But, do you know if I can get CarPlay with an update? I seriously never use the navigation or anything in the system, except twice a year where I have to change the clock (bonus for just have a DST toggle, not actually changing the clock). Give me CarPlay and I will pay for it. (I have at CT200h)

Yeah we didn't really have any extreme heat all summer and now its September and 95*? So weird.
