We got an extreme heat warning for the next few days here. Highs of 93*, with a feels-like of 108*. And none of the classrooms at our schools have ac. I am making sure to send lots and lots of water.

Add me to someone living in the wicked heat right now. Schools around us typically don't have AC and they use fans which still isn't great, but it's something. The power just went out in the school area and restoration is not expected until after school ends. The poor kids will be puddles.
Oh no! Just 4 days? That stinks. I’m sorry. We got the email about recess being inside today because of the heat. I really don’t get this weather.
Yeah we didn't really have any extreme heat all summer and now its September and 95*? So weird.
Seriously! The weather this summer blew big time. It feels like an extra insult to finally have the heat after the kids are back in school. I want a summer do over.
Does anyone have a Shiba Inu? We’ve put in an application to rescue one, and I know a bit about the breed, but not much.
I don't but my coworker got one when I worked with him. All I remember is that they have a *lot* of energy and can be a pain if you don't have enough time to give them the attention they need.
We met ds1’s teacher yesterday and I love her! So happy that he has made it through elementary school with amazing teachers.

I don't know much about them, but I just watched a TikTok where someone flew on an airplane with one, and it was in the cargo hold. When the airport workers opened the plane, it just popped its head out the door. Apparently it chewed through the cage - while sedated - and was just hanging out on its own in there. Many of the comments were like "that is the most Shiba Inu thing ever!". So apparently they are mischievous!
I am STRUGGLING to get into a workout routine these days. Every morning I mean to get up and work out, and every morning I hit snooze too many times and don't. It's not even like a conscious decision - I make bad choices when I'm sleeping. What the hell? Then I end up not showering for part of the day because I think I'm going to have time to work out during the day, but then I get busy doing work stuff and don't. And by the evening I'm tired and I need to make/eat dinner and then I don't work out. It's all dumb but I can't seem to shake myself into changing it. And I'm guessing I wouldn't be so tired all the damn time if I was in better shape!
bears I have mixtiles and love them! I got a set of 3 large ones, but I like them so much that I think I'm going to do a set of smaller ones for the stairway.
School was canceled for today and tomorrow due to the heat. Today I get, it feels like 107....but tomorrow is going to be 85
bears don't feel bad, she could have just as easily gotten it while she wasn't home. Chalk it up to getting some experience with improvising, you know we all have been there!

Do you want advice? I'll put it under a spoiler in case you're just venting lol
For me, I'm probably never going to be super motivated to work out. So I had to make it part of my routine and a habit. To do that, I lay out my workout clothes the night before (some people sleep in them, but that feels constricting to me) and tell myself that no matter what I'm going to get dressed and go roll out my mat and do SOMETHING. Even if it's just a 10 minute stretch, 5 minute core, etc. If after that I'm feeling like I can do more, great, here's a 20 minute upper or lower or full body or whatever. I stack the workouts in my Peloton app so there's no decision making necessary in the morning other than, "Do I keep going past these first 5 minutes?" And at first, I stopped a LOT after the first easy thing. And I told myself something is better than nothing and didn't judge myself. But it got me in the routine and habit of 'get up, get dressed, go to the mat' and it made it easier to start adding things in. And even now, 30 minutes is my max attention span for it. But that's enough.

Thanks, that's good advice! I think I do end up talking myself out of it often because I think I need 30-40 minutes to work out/cool down and then shower afterward, but doing a few minutes at a time definitely is better than nothing so I probably need to just get over that idea.
My son doesn't start school until next week and I'm going back to work full time so these might be our last 2 regular summer days together. It is SO HOT today we're just hanging at home. It's supposed to be nice tomorrow and based on the bakery conversations here I am seriously considering driving tomorrow to do a bakery taste test between Nick and Sons and The Scone Pony. Then the beach and maybe some glass blowing. I think that would really end the summer in style!

I agree. On days I can't motivate myself to go for a run I tell myself that I have to do at least 1 mile and after that I can stop if I want to. Usually once I get started I'm happy to keep going, but once in a while I get to 1 mile and I'm like "yup, still not feeling it" and stop. But at least I've done something.
Very random but you never know so I'm asking. My mom bought a new SUV and we took her old one for me to commute in. The only issue is that although my dad was fanatic about other kinds of maintenance, I think it never occurred to them that they could/should update the OS on the infotainment/navigation system. It's $169 plus the dealer cost to install it, so I'm guessing we'd net out around $300ish. Is it worth it? The current interface is so outdated looking, but I'm not sure if the new one is any better, or if it's possible to put in an entirely new system. It's an Rx350 and Lexus Enform if anyone happens to have specific knowledge. I think Lexus has stopped using that system, so this would be the last update available.
So, I’ve never updated mine. But, do you know if I can get CarPlay with an update? I seriously never use the navigation or anything in the system, except twice a year where I have to change the clock (bonus for just have a DST toggle, not actually changing the clock). Give me CarPlay and I will pay for it. (I have at CT200h)
I'll second this. I'm an Android person and can't imagine driving a car without Android Auto.

So one of the great things about WFH for me is that I can fit in a few minutes of exercise whenever i have a small break in my schedule. There are a lot of days where I can fit in a quick 5 minute walk or 10 min on the elliptical between meetings. When i need a break from my laptop, I go do a quick walk up/down the block. It's not a lot all at once, but by the end of the day I've racked up a nice step count.
Usually that's enough to then motivate me to do a "full" workout after work, but not always. And that's ok! Sometimes I'm just too tired/unmotivated/HOT to do anything extra and then I can think to myself, well that's ok b/c I got in 3 short walks, so at least I did something today!
ny96 I really wanted a Shiba Inu years ago and did a ton of breed research. We wanted to rescue and ended up with an American Eskimo (who was listed in Petfinder very incorrectly). We went on to have Eskies for about 15 years. A main difference between the two breeds is that Eskies never shut up, but they are both Spitz breeds and are insanely smart. Be ready to keep them busy because they get depressed when they are bored. Our boy Eskie could do some crazy tricks with us only showing him once or twice. He jumped through hoops, could spin and hop, shake hands, dance, do obstacle courses and basically seemed to understand us as well as a small child in terms of clearly spoken commands. Both our Eskies liked to be up high and we found them standing on tables more than once.
The other thing is that spitz breeds can be...prickly and aren't always a super great fit for inexperienced owners. We had one Eskie who was not child-friendly and really just not a super big fan of anyone other than us. We had another who was a total sweetie puffball, but that was notable because every vet we ever had was shocked at her level of chill. Coincidentally, she was the dimmest spitz I've ever come across, so your mileage may vary. Some vets will look sidewise at spitz breeds because they can be snappish and some rentals won't take larger spitzes. I never really experienced an issue with that with our Eskies but we only rented one year owning them.

rubytue, I had to get a whole new radio/entertainment system to get CarPlay. My GMC acadia had their old infotainment system in it, the Nav was AWFUL and the ability to say "call mom" just stopped working one day. Now, i have a Pioneer system, and unfortunately seem to have multiple issues with the microphone. It's working now for me to say "call mom" or whatever, but voice texting just works when it decides to.

How does one impress upon a kid that school is NOT simply for socializing but to learn something? I had a call w Miss R's therapist today that confirmed many previously suspected things (she only attends school to socialize, not to learn anything; she is incredibly self entitled; she believes she can do whatever she wants and does it bc she's learned if she threatens enough (verbally, physically, bullying online, etc.), she'll get her way (gangster mentality); overall her personality and attitude are unpleasant). She needs to get through HS bc I cannot support her for the rest of her life. Right now our plan is to get her through HS/GED on a modified school day (2 classes on campus and the remaining 4 through Home/Hospital Instruction) and cut the cord entirely. I have to brace myself for the fact that I might never have a relationship w her bc of her attitude. Her father had an identical one and I divorced him, more than happy to have never seen him again for the rest of his life. Sadly, his daughter is him all over again.
She wonders why J hasn't proposed yet after 6y completely clueless to the fact that her behavior is a main driver behind it. Its not just him I have to think about, we're blending 2 families and that includes one that has ZERO tolerance for her antics. The last thing I want is J's access to his son restricted bc of R's behavior. Truth be told, if she wasnt' my kid and my kid wanted to hang out with someone like her, the answer would be a resounding NO.
That sounds really hard, pinkdutchtulips - I'm sorry. I'm sure this is something you've explored, but is there any kind of therapeutic boarding school you could try? I imagine they are $$$, but seems like you have a lot of professional documentation that she's a worthy candidate.

We’re applying for this specific dog because they said she is good with kids, I guess we’ll see.
