Merry Christmas from England!
Woke up with period cramps, so great present for me. LOL. At this moment I have a dog snuggled up next to me so I'm feeling happy. Soon it'll be time to go grab the presents for my H (we do small stuff) and then begin to get ready for dinner prep (eating early for my MIL).
Hope your day is filled with some peace, happiness or at least something that sparks a bit of gratitude or joy.
I swear, my 10yo was worse this year than any year I can think of about gift opening. She barely slept last night and was up at 5:30! I thought they got better as they got older!
Merry Christmas! For some reason I woke up at 5:00, so I'm the first one in the family awake this morning. DS 2 wasn't far behind, and now we're chilling with some pre-breakfast toast waiting for Kid 1 and H to wake up.
Little kid slept in my bed because she's coughing like crazy. She started tossing and turning before 5 and wouldn't go back to sleep. Gave up at 520, woke big sister up at 545 because... well because. I've already yelled at the kids a couple of times because they're being ridiculous. Have to wait for H to open the non-stocking presents, and he's taking FOREVER.
We did the main family celebration last night. It was so nice. DS even wrapped up work an hour early and showed up just as DH and I did. I went over to help my 86-year-old mom get prepped. It was nice to spend a little time hanging out that wasn't some sort of doctor appointment. She was charged with preparing the prime rib which was a leap of faith. I printed her a reverse-sear recipe to follow but she didn't really read it well. I had to prompt her to do the dry rub the night before. I tried to talk her through cutting the meat along the bone to make it easier to carve but she wasn't getting it and almost cut it into steaks. I may have yelled over the phone. I am a monster who was weirdly invested in this piece of meat. As luck would have it, the meat cooked in half the time it was supposed to, so we had to pull and tent it for quite some time before finishing it off. Glad I was there because she wouldn't be checking temp as early as I would. I set up a cheese tray and she laid the table to be festive. The rest of the food was excellent. She still makes a Yorkshire pudding that rocks-- mine are always a little flat.
Gifts were fun. DS got some amazing Lego kits. My niece gave me a lovely bone China teacup that says "No fucks to give" inside; lift the cup and the saucer says "Zero". DH got almost $500 in amazon cards to fuel his book addiction. My niece and I are buying mom a Toto toilet and Washlet. I mean, what do you give the woman who has everything? It's not in yet, so my niece fashioned a cardboard stand it that was the hit of the night.
DH, DS and I will exchange a few things when they get up later and then we'll bring mom over for a smaller dinner later this afternoon which'll be nice.
I hope everyone who observes the holiday finds some peace in the day.
DH’s 93 year old grandma hosts Xmas later today, and she hasn’t been well. We’re potlucking dinner, and we were assigned the salad.
Except, I forgot.
Last night at 9pm it dawned on me and the 4 of us were laughing so hard when I was digging through the fridge to find one Romaine heart from last week’s groceries. I was crying laughing when DH said to just mix in “more croutons than you’ve ever seen in your life. No one will notice” 😂
So, at 10pm, I DoorDash 3 plain salads from Sheetz gas station for $40.
Then this morning, one of the first gifts I unwrapped was a new pair of salad tongs. DS declared 2023 the “year of the salad fiasco” and by dropping the ball in one tiny way, it’s brought us so much joy. 🤣
Merry Christmas from our gas station salad family to yours! ❤️

13 seems to be the magic sleep in age. I’m the one that has been up for hours just waiting.

My 9 (almost 10 yo) and 7 yo were up at 5:05. They were told they could open stockings but couldn’t wake us until 6:00, but of course I heard every sound. Then they were in the kitchen with water and I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what they were doing. Best I can understand, they pulled the labels off their tictacs (stocking gift) because they couldn’t figure out how to open them. Then they tried to wash the sticky off the tic-tac boxes but the water leaked in. So a mess. But whatever.
DS1 declared it the best Christmas ever and everyone has been happy and with good attitudes.

Turkey is in the oven with the butter under the skin and thick cut bacon on top. All veg is cut and prepped. Have followed my timeline perfectly (go me!).
I got Cooper a box of squeaky eggs. He proceeded to rip up the egg box and toss the eggs everywhere in the room. He was thrilled to squeak away while we had breakfast and then again in the living room. When they bounce, they go randomly, so he's already put a few under chairs. We'll do a search to find them eventually.
Merry Christmas! Wish me strength for the big in laws gathering today. We spent a pleasant evening with MIL last night and we will drive her the hour or so to SIL’s house.
I love my in-laws (well, except one and his wife), because they are loving and kind and generous people. But they are a LOT. A lot a lot.
It’s going to be several hours of chaos and noise and people demanding I “tell them a joke.” But then H and I will retreat back to our quiet hotel room and that’ll feel wonderful.
C was up at 5:45 but we held off on stockings/present until about 7:30. C got everything on his wish list (which was quite modest) and declared it “the best Christmas ever.” I’m pleased that we restrained ourselves on gifts for him and didn’t go overboard like we usually do.
H did a great job with my stocking and pretty much cleaned off my Amazon wish list, which was a pleasant surprise.
Merry Christmas! DD did not sleep at all last night, she kept going up and down the stairs. She was loud and I don't think any of us got much sleep. I made her wait until 6:30 to open her presents, but her stocking was fair game for earlier. I had 3 cups of coffee while she opened and I took a nap after, finally up and making cinnamon rolls for breakfast. DD is busy setting up her new stuff, dad is working on the stairs and mom should be home from church soon. I planned for an easy dinner and a relaxing day at home.
It’s snowing!!! After rain almost all day yesterday it’s beautiful. H told his family to check the road’s/ weather before they head over “if you make it here you are going home”.
My family is in blizzard warning for the next 2 days or something crazy. The most they will have to venture out is to feed cows.
I’m excited to go no where today! We’ve never had Christmas at home before.
Somehow I managed to really bang and scrape my knee into my bedside table climbing into bed last night so I’m back in bed with my leg straight out while my husband does some meal prepping and from the sounds of it, eats candy.
This year just my dad is visiting us. My grandma just got out of the hospital with RSV, also just moved into an independent living facility and Christmas time is the anniversary of my grandpa's death so my mom wanted to stay and spend the holiday with her, which I totally understand. We are not able to travel that far in the car anymore with our arthritic dog, so my dad just came down here. It has been really nice; I still miss having my mom here. Hopefully next year when they retire they'll be able to all move down here and we can all be together at the holidays.
Right now, H is making breakfast (we do a huge brunch/breakfast for our Christmas meal) and I'm drinking coffee with a yule log on the TV. We'll open gifts after breakfast.

DS popped awake and is totally overjoyed with his gifts.
I'm cracking up at the gifts he picked out for H (he went shopping with my mom). H is now the proud owner of a large mouth bass bottle opener and a giant candy cane full of M&M's.
Merry Christmas! We had a lovely Xmas Eve with just my parents and brother. My dad did great and the food was delicious. Then after they all left the four of us all got cozy on the couch and watched elf. My heart is full. I never in a million years thought the teen years would be the best years.
Both kids are up. My alarm went off 10 minutes ago. The in laws will be here in just under an hour. I need to drag myself out of bed and throw on some lounge clothes. I’m going to get the cinnamon rolls into the oven to proof and tray up bacon to bake. Hopefully by the time I’m done with all of that it will be close to time for them to get here because DS2 is crawling out of his skin. He’s been really good though.
Fingers crossed everyone enjoys their presents and we all get to have a relaxing, low key day.
Omg I’m so pissed - DS2’s big gift was oculus. Ordered new from GameStop, came shrink wrapped in a box, legit tracking and everything. The box was just full of wood pieces! Someone - an employee? - stole the oculus, replaced it with wood so it weighed the same, shrink wrapped it again and sent it out. WTF. And we obviously can’t fix it today because everything is closed. I’m so angry someone can be such a shit.

Oh man, that really sucks! I’m sure GameStop will make it right, but definitely a huge Christmas morning letdown.
I had a very similar experience a few years ago with some wireless earbuds I got for my birthday. MIL ordered them from Amazon and when they showed up the product box was completely empty.
DS(7.5) woke up sobbing at 5am with a stuffed runny nose. Thankfully he went back to sleep. I think I did too? I was on the couch near his room in case he needed me. It's 7:20 and I think he's awake.
I think after being healthy since we got over covid in August, the sickness is finally here. My mom, oldest sister and twin sister are all sick. Most of my nieces and nephews are sick too. We were all together this past week so just spreading the love of shared germs around.
My mom is making us all slog through Christmas even though I'm pretty sure everyone else except DS just wanted to lay in bed and ignore it, so we go to her house today for part two after a big Christmas with my cousins last night for more turkey, ham and presents.
I will give Christmas this - it's not any worse than any other day without my dad. I thought it would be triggering but it is just sort of empty. It's fine.
I wanted to go to Jamaica and was outvoted but jokes on everyone else, it was close to 70 here yesterday.
circa1978 I’m so sorry about your dad. Holidays can be really rough. Often the anticipation is harder than the actual day, but the whole season can just be awful. Wishing you peace.

So much for an easy day. My dad clogged the toilet and I don't have a plunger, I'm not sure where it went. I only have one bathroom. I spent the last hour trying to clear it with alternative methods with zero luck. Walgreens appears to be open and has a plunger in stock, wish me luck.
