I am shocked that several of you in the US with desk jobs are working today! It's a national holiday to honor an important person in our history, everything should be closed!
I am doing nothing today so I think I will work on cleaning out my closet and a couple of junk drawers. I have gotten way behind on organizing important papers and filing them, so that will be part of it too. Not super exciting but will feel great once it's done!
I bought everything for our new dog yesterday. I felt like a new mom picking out stuff for a baby, lol. I was dying at the teeny tiny sweater and toys I bought him. I have only had big dogs before so getting little dog stuff is new. I spent nearly $400 on everything but I think we will be set for a while - I bought 5 kinds of treats and several toys since I have no idea what he will enjoy so I wanted options.

My credit card got scammed for $600. Who hoo fun times for me! Ugh. I have to wait tomorrow to get into the bank bc they messed up my account and I can’t cancel online. I did manage to get a phone banker and hope they did cancel the card, I’m sure they did but now I’m kinda fearful due to the shenanigans in the process.
I hardly even used this card, I have no idea how they got the number to scam me. Bastards.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham
Enjoying my coffee, I slept in a bit, no work or school today, but DD does have dance this afternoon. I need to finish painting the stair trim today, it looks so fresh all painted white, and I'm glad I did it, but trim is such a pain to paint. I wasn't going to paint the kitchen until I finished some organization stuff, but after a lot of thought and measuring I decided the giant hutch should go in the kitchen where I'm blocking off the door. I don't want to move the hutch until after I paint, so I'm going to get started on kitchen painting next weekend, it's going to be yellow. I always wanted a yellow kitchen, but exh hated yellow. I also need to finish the laundry, clean and get groceries.
Woke up to a dusting of light snow. I wasn’t expecting it until late afternoon and I had planned to go get a new cell phone today. And the place I wanted to go in 30 minutes away. It doesn’t look bad out there, but it’s been 2 years since we got snow and I expect the world has forgotten what it’s like.
And the local Reddit is screaming it’s horrible out there. Then they do the Reddit thing where they blame individuals and not consider 1- it’s been 2 years 2 - it’s a bit cold for the pretreatment 3 - it’s too little for a plow.
Also, my H who wouldn’t buy me a snowblower and said not to worry, he will take care of it, is still laying in bed playing baldurs gate.
edit - no, I know this isn’t snowblower snow lol I’m just annoyed he hasn’t done anything at all about it. Pretty sure I can sweep it lol

I’m off today but H is not. It’s another day with wind chills of -30. The only place I plan to go is the vet later because we think Rox may have an ear infection.
Otherwise I plan to do a YouTube workout video and paint my nails. We normally go in office on Tuesdays but my boss told us on Friday to stay home tomorrow due to the dangerous temps so that’s nice.
I’m on my 5th day of Covid quarantine and I’m over it. So far the rest of the family has avoided it, and I’m going stir crazy. At least I get to hole up in the primary suite while H takes the guest room.
Older kiddo has a half day today while our 4 year old has off.
this is basically my update although I’m only on day 3 Paxlovid is awesome because I basically feel totally fine now, except I have the nasty paxlovid mouth taste in my mouth at all times which makes it hard to sleep.
I LOVE Paxlovid. It’s a magic drug and I’m so grateful for it. I have recommended it to so many people and I hate that it’s gotten an inaccurate bad rap of causing rebound infections because it has made such a difference for me both times I’ve had COVID.
ETA - I hope you both feel better soon! I recommend cinnamon disks / red hots to help combat that taste.
It's super cold here in South Louisiana. We almost never get below freezing. Our house is on a concrete foundation, so I've got my fingers crossed that we are fine.
We had a great weekend in Atlanta. I enjoyed Medieval Times more than I thought I would. The food was pretty good, I don't eat meat on the bone, so FI deboned it all for me. The show was cheesy, but not bad. We agreed that we enjoyed it, but once was enough.
H and I are both the same way about bone-in meat. The texture of the meat near the bone is different and we can’t stand it. It also makes it feel too real that it’s an animal I’m eating.
beerlover , it's totally a thing! I think it's from the coughing but the same thing happens to me.
followyourarrow , The whole not eating meat on a bone is fascinating to me. My stepson is the same way. I've chatted with him about it because I don't get it - I mean you know the meat had bones so what's the deal? He's like "IDK, it's just weird to me" LOL It doesn't bother me or anything I just don't get it. Anyway, you're the only other person besides him I've heard mention that!
For me, it's not so much the bone itself, but the tendons and connective tissue, I can't stand the texture of them.

My job just gave us MLK of about two years ago and took away Christmas Eve so they aren't actually giving more time off. I'm really mad at how they handled that.
I'm off. Did a volunteer gig thus morning and am now blissfully alone at a coffee shop with a book and a latte because my husband and kids wanted to go look at electronics at some store. Byeeeeee
Plus, I beat the midmorning rush at the coffee shop and have a comfy chair.

I personally do not get the day off, I am WFH. I work in the corporate office of a retailer, so we are sensitive to the office having holidays that stores and distribution centers cannot participate in.
Imagine if retail, restaurants, and Amazon deliveries were actually closed today. There would be some angry people around here lol.
I have been trying to tell my daughter since the start of the school year that audiobooks are books, and that if she doesn't want to do her 20 minutes of nightly reading with a print book, that it is OK to listen to it. She has continually argued with me about it and refused to let me set her up with audiobooks, despite her ALSO fighting about reading every night.
Anyway, she finally let me set up an audiobook for her last week. Last night, I went into to say goodnight and found her curled up around the Amazon Echo, listening to her book. It wasn't even a school night and no one had told her to read. It made my heart happy.
She is required to read at home and write brief reports on a certain number of books per marking period. I'm hoping that will all become much easier now that she has discovered audiobooks.
We spent Sat/Sun in a blacksmithing class for a friend's birthday, and all stayed together in a big rental near a bunch of breweries/distilleries. It was so much fun, but everyone is underslept and overstimulated, and just physically wiped out. We made the three hour drive here in a torrential downpour on Friday, and now we're driving home in snow.
I can't wait to pick up the dog and groceries, and snuggle in at home. Fingers crossed for at least a two hour delay in the morning, if not an outright closure.

I’m the same way, and I can’t really explain it. I’ll take it off the bone myself though. I think it’s the biteof surprise I do t like, when something I’d pick off (hard, too chewy, a tendon piece, etc) ends up in my mouth, and I just don’t like that. The meat is good though!! DH usually polishes mine off the rest of the way. 😂 I try, but I do leave meat, and no one wants to waste it’s deliciousness.
I'm the same. I hate all the non-meat stuff that comes along with bone in meat. I'm easily turned off by the way meat looks or feels, bleh (I don't eat much meat these days, and I definitely hate to cook it).
Snow!! All of the MLK jr day festivities are canceled so I guess we are staying in.
My husband has decided to make some kimchi stew so looking forward to that. We went wild at the grocery store and Costco so we wouldn’t have to shop in the cold/snow this week. Braving the weather is not for me lol

Sadly, all three of the employers I've worked for since I started my professional career almost 20 years ago do not give all national holidays, such as MLK Jr day and President's Day off. We only get a portion of national holidays. I do get Juneteeth off now, so that is a step in the right direction.
To be honest, I would actually be fine working today, if there could be some sort of volunteering event or way to reflect MLK Jr's ideals and ambitions.
I have been sick since Wednesday and only this morning am I feeling marginally better. Unfortunately I was also up all night either coughing or dealing with coughing kids, so I'm definitely not feeling great.
Everyone had better be out of the house at school/daycare tomorrow or I'm going to really lose it.
I also can't believe some people work today, I thought everything closed, especially schools!
Still freezing temps here and I’m so thankful to have today off as I’ll finally be able to get out of the house for a bit. I’ll admit to a little too much reading and binge watching this weekend when I was stuck at home and could have been doing something productive. Oops.
Am debating working from home tomorrow. I’m supposed to be in the office but the ice has been bad on the roads and our parking lot has historically been awful for slip and falls.

seriously! The first time I had Covid (a year and a half ago) I had monoclonal antibodies - paxlovid seems to work better! I wish it was open to more people. Like my 17 year old struggled so much coming back from a pretty minor case of Covid this fall (he runs track/XC and it really affected his breathing). He’s on no meds to be a contraindication etc and there’s no shortage. I’m sure there’s a reason it’s still not available except to those who qualify with different conditions, but it would be awesome if it was more accessible like tamiflu
We are all off today. DS1 does have a dental cleaning at noon. I got all of my housework done (except some more laundry). I did my geocery shopping, yesterday so it'll be a fairly relaxing day otherwise.
I finished Britney's memoir Saturday night (it was a Christmas gift). It definitely confirmed my thoughts, that in general, childhood fame is a terrible path to put your child on.
I'm probably going to head out for a walk this afternoon with the dog. It'll hit low 30s (I think).
I'm so over winter already and we are not even a month in 😳
We were supposed to get at least 12" of snow over the weekend and only got maybe an inch total instead. Major snow bummer after what's been a disappointing winter overall. I would love to get a good dumping of snow when we don't have to go anywhere or do anything except watch it come down, but unfortunately that's not how it's shaping up this year.
My dad is going to take the kids to see Wonka at some point today, and I still need to go grocery shopping and do laundry. The kids and I are off, but H not only has a full clinic day but also a meeting across town with another provider group at 5:30. I roasted a chicken on Friday night and made stock with the carcass yesterday, so tonight we'll have chicken noodle soup for dinner.
Everyone home today. Struggling with a recent diagnosis for DD1 (15) of Autism, yet totally not surprised. I think learning she can not really look at people’s faces and understand how they feel or not able to understand tone of voice is messing me up.
I was well aware of sensory issues and adjusted and adapted, but the social component was all chalked up to anxiety.
So between her dyscalculia and autism, and DD2’s ADHD - irrationally wondering what is wrong with us to not be able to have “normal kids”. I know this is irrational and I love the kids and know that no one is normal.
H never gets MLKJr day off so I'm hanging with DS(7.5) today. It's still very cold out and the library is closed so we'll be staying home today. I'm going to make DS do somw math & reading though. Maybe one of my sisters will be able to come over for a bit. *shrug*

keyslover I think it’s totally normal to worry about your kids, especially after a diagnosis, to wonder what the future holds. I also can think of so many examples of people who thrive because of their neurodiversity, not in spite of it. Hopefully this diagnosis helps to name strengths and challenges for your DD and then she can lean into her strengths. I do think naming and identifying what is underneath behaviors you already know are there can help channel our energies and talents into areas that we can succeed.
But still ((hugs)). I’m sure you need to go through the mental adjustment and acceptance process.
We are all off today. Our MLK Day tradition is to drive about 2 hours to the snow and go tubing. It’s 50* in the mountains today, but we are going to try anyway. I woke up with a bad cold, and I’m feeling crappy, but my kids want to do this, so we will see how well this day goes… 😩
We decided not to go (though I told the kids it’s just too warm to have good snow, rather than totally claiming responsibility for the decision 😬) so now we are trying to figure out something fun to do. I was super productive yesterday so I could be present for something fun today…but I still feel yucky.

My H is an accounting manager for a security company. He's been in accounting his entire adult career (sine 2008) for 3 different companies. In all that time he's had MLKJr day off twice. At the company he worked for for only 2 years.
I've only ever worked for childcare associated with schools or for public school districts so I've never not had it off.
My H and I are both off and the kids are at my in laws, so we’re having a lazy day. I will probably go pick up trash in our neighborhood later as a very small act of service.
My H started a YouTube channel with DS1 and one of his favorite musical artists commented on his latest video the other day, I loved seeing how excited they both were ❤️. The channel has nothing to do with music and only has like 25 subscribers so it’s weird the artist even found it.
David and H are both off today. We got snow overnight so we're just having a cozy day inside by the fire. We have gingerbread cookies to decorate and will probably open a bottle of wine in a few hours. Here's hoping we don't lose power!
