The literal plot of Barbie is men deciding what's best for women without women's input/hijacking women's stuff. And, leaving aside America Ferrara's deserved nom, literal Barbie was snubbed and literal Ken was not. Also, Greta Gerwig.
This is not an original or hot take but the mother fucker Trump is running again and I am just like fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck men X 10000.
That is all I have to say on the topic. I don't even care about awards shows (except for the fashion) or girl power kitsch, but, just, ARGHHH.
I haven't even watched Barbie and I'm annoyed. I saw the statement Ryan Gosling put out and thought it was good. There would be no Ken without Barbie. And there would be no Barbie without Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig. It's such an obvious snub and just feels passive aggressive and petty.

Fuck the patriarchy! Me and DD have bonded so much over watching this movie over and over. I love that someday she’ll get the deeper message and will love it even more.

I’m going to throw in a tangential rage -
My scout troop presented their amazing bronze award project. They partnered with their school counseling offices to make a book with information, screeners and coping strategies for anxiety. They made a ton of fidgets and illustrated their own coloring book. They put everything online for free to use to increase the sustainability of the project.
And the minute they got done presenting, some asshole man on the school board asked, “When are the cookies coming?”

FUCK OFF.
OMG I can totally picture this and I bet he thought he was fucking hilarious. What an asshole. 🤬

That sounds like an awesome project. Good job to you and your girls! Sorry that jerk had to be a jerk.
I'm also one who didn't particularly like the movie, but could appreciate that it was well-done for what it was and also appreciate the message, and I agree that the nominations are ridiculous.
Re: Trump, Lord help us all. It almost doesn’t even matter whether he wins or loses. The fact that he is going to be the nominee again just really cements how fucked up this country is.

I was going to say "did they even watch the movie?" but they obviously DID watch and were very offended. Instead of learning they doubled down. Assholes.
As far as Trump I'm continually amazed at all the support he still gets from people despite all the legal action being taken against him, not to mention just HIM being him. The mental gymnastics people use are unbelievable.
I can see how acting nominations don't necessarily go hand-in-hand with the overall movie nomination, so I can forgive them thinking Margot Robbie wasn't as good as the other women who were nominated. But if you think the whole damn movie is good enough for best picture, how is the director not getting a nomination? Aren't those kind of tied together? Especially if you also think two of the cast members deserve awards for their performances WHICH WERE DIRECTED BY THE DIRECTOR? Make it make sense.
Two women, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, carried the number one movie of 2023 and the Oscar nom went to the dude they brought along for the ride. Color me not at all surprised.

I’m super pissed too, but I wish we saw this same energy every time Black women are snubbed year after year. (Not talking about anyone in this thread, just overall.) Also a lot of the memes left out America Ferrara and I feel some kind of way about that.

I do think the Ken role was a more challenging performance to get right than the Barbie role, so I'm not upset about Gosling's nom. Snubbing Greta Gerwig tho....
The director snub is awful; Greta Gerwig should be in that category.
Margot being left out isn't so much of a snub to me. In competition with the other lead actresses, I don't think her performance was of their level (the only one I haven't seen is Nyad).

However, I am glad that it seems like less and less "regular" people watch and/or care about the awards every year.
Although I haven't seen it (LOL), I'm fairly certain Jeffery Wright deserves the win, but I'm certain it'll go to one of the white guys in a biopic playing a dead white guy.

She got an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

Yes, I know. But a lot of the memes are mentioning Gosling’s nomination and lamenting that Robbie and Gerwig were not and leaving off any celebration or recognition of Ferrara.
I saw an Instagram post that said the Oscar nominations--snubbing Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig while honoring Gosling-- was the entire plot of the Barbie movie.

Indeed. As a troop leader myself, this would send me into a blind hot rage. WTF. What a dismissive thing to say to those amazing scouts who did what sounds like a fantastic bronze award project!

I know the point of this thread is the Oscars, which I don't watch but I'm still mad about. I'm also mad about the Trump stuff. I don't follow political races enough to have an idea of how Haley would have done in NH, but I was surprised she didn't do better (ETA) if nothing else because people don't want Trump or Biden. I physically can't with Trumpers anymore. Literally losing their mind over the Biden kids infractions or crimes, but Trump has done no wrong. Trumps charges are fake and a waste of money to try them.
Don't even get me started on women still actively supporting Trump when he's a giant, if not the whole, reason we're having abortion issues.
I guarantee you Greta Gerwig had Trump's world in her mind when she made Barbie.

This x 1000. Also, Lily Gladstone's nomination. There were many Asian actors that were snubbed this year. This Barbie "controversy" has completely taken over the conversation while missing some other amazing accomplishments and actors who were also not nominated.

Ugh.
I...don't know that Margot Robbie got snubbed. Admittedly, I don't know enough about the other roles that were nominated to know who should come off of that list for her to go on. She did a great job. Was it better than those who were nominated? Was it one of the top 5 performances of the year? Or was she great but came in like, 6th or 7th? Or was she somewhat overshadowed by other actors in her film? I'm glad she is nominated for Producer, and I'm glad the film was nominated for Best Picture, and I'm glad she's succeeding all the way to the bank on this film, and I'm glad it was both part of and improved the dialogue regarding women in this country.
I think Greta Gerwig not getting nominated is a bigger crime. The fact that it was such a heavily nominated movie speaks to the fact that she should have been nominated (See also Ben Affleck for Argo). I do think the movie was 20 minutes too long, but I don't know if that was a directing issue or an editing issue.
I also feel like the fact that the only talk is about Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig not getting nominated DOES screw America Ferrera a little bit more each time. It cheapens her successes, and she's worked for decades to get to this point and I'm so thrilled for her and want her to win and I hate that all we seem to be talking about is everyone BUT her, and she's being treated as almost an afterthought to this discussion.
I do want to point out that Gerwig was nominated for screenplay, and Robbie is one of the producers that is up for best picture. DH is allll about movies and he follows this stuff really closely, and he's saying the insider narrative has changed and Barbie will now likely win picture (previously Oppenheimer was in the lead).
How weird. We should hate on men more and stop trying to reason out if the academy made a mistake.
They’re collectively the worst!
Yeah I’m here. I also don’t understand the argument that being angered by a snub (to a director whose movie basically ran the summer in a year that was very hard on movies with 2 strikes) somehow diminishes the success/achievement of a different woman actor.
We should all be angry at the men in charge, not nitpicking other women.
