It’s Saturday night in Australia and 530 eastern, so I’m going with it.
Flying in Australia was wild. We checked in at the Sydney airport and they never verified our identity. They also don’t do varied group boarding on Virgin (no clue on other airlines). It was like people needing assistance, gold platinum business people, everyone else. They also board through both doors.
Anyway we saw my uncle and his partner after we got to our AirBnB. My uncle was having a good day and was so happy to see my mom. I’m so glad we did this and I’m just sad it wasn’t sooner, but hindsight is always that way.
Tonight H and I are going to a formal charity auction dinner planned by some of my students. I’m so proud of them for putting this whole event together! And I’m excited to wear an actual formal dress tonight instead of my uniform. And they got some amazing donations, so maybe we’ll bid on a few things…you know, for a good cause (Gold Star Families) 😉
Something very terrible happened in my hometown this week (it appears to be a domestic violence situation with arson and homicide - very TWing). I found out last night one of the victims was enrolled at my high school for next year. It really hit home for me. I remember how excited I was to get the opportunity to go to my school. For some reason that detail just shredded my already broken heart.
It’s 6:30 here and I’ve already done my yoga for the day and need to get DS up for baseball practice soon. Other than that and his therapy we have no plans this weekend, which I love. Thinking a nap is going on the agenda…

Today we are celebrating my MIL who passed on 1/25 after living with Alzheimer’s for the past 10 years. She was only 66 when she was diagnosed and she deteriorated rapidly. For the past 5 years she has been nonverbal and non ambulatory. Her daughters and my H were devoted to making her as comfortable as possible. She was a total pill and they had a pretty tumultuous life growing up. And so did she. I’m so glad she can finally have this peace. Today, I will celebrate all that she wanted to be and the fact that she can be free of her suffering.
snapoutofit, I'm sorry for your loss, I hope that today brings you some healing.
ssmjlm, I'm so glad that your trip is going well and you were able to see your uncle on a good day.
I'm jumping in a Chill for Change (polar plunge) for the local YMCA camp today. My completely rational mind has slightly convinced myself that I'm going to have a heart attack when I hit the water. On a brighter note, the AI generated team picture I made of three chickens in snow gear jumping into a frozen pond gives me joy.

I’m on day 8 of shingles. It hasn’t been terrible and the rash is mostly gone, but my sleep has been crap. I was on the couch from 1-4:30 this morning. I went back to bed from 4:30-8. I’m having coffee and want to workout shortly (low impact until I’m totally healed) DS has a hockey game 1.5 hours away late this afternoon and another one close to home very early tomorrow morning so we will see how productive we are this weekend. The only good part about his early hockey game is I will be up for a 5am online registration for a race we do every Memorial Day weekend that usually fills up immediately.

I just dropped DS off with H (who miraculously can suddenly get full weekends off 🙄). I went to Starbucks and now I'm waiting in the parking lot of my hair appointment listening to music until it's time to go in.

Last night DD and H went to the “Someone Special” dance at her school. She looked so cute all dressed up. While they were there I went over a friend’s house along with another friend. They’re my closest local mom friends and I unloaded on them about what’s been happening with H. I’m glad I did, they were super supportive.
For once no early hockey today so I was able to sleep in a little, at least until the dogs woke me. Me sleeping in the guest room is a real perk for H as far as they go. Since I’m adjacent to where the dogs sleep now, they whine to wake me up and he never has to take a turn. How nice for him!
Today I have a lunch with my extended family to remember our cousin who passed a year ago today. It will be good to see everyone.
We were up at the crack of dawn to get David to his robotics meet that's an hour away. I'm excited for David because they're in the finals and he gets to drive the robot because the original driver has to miss because of an injury. Nobody stepped up because it's a lot of pressure, so I'm proud of David for taking it on. I hope he does well. So, me and H have the entire day to ourselves. We're going to brunch at a Thai/Vietnamese fusion place, getting me new running shoes, then seeing Lisa Frankenstein. Looks weird! Hope it's good.
I get to drag DS to get a haircut this morning. It's sensory overload for him and he hates it. I promised him a cake pop at Starbucks on the way home. Then I'm going to drop DS off at home with H and run all my errands I couldn't do last weekend due to stupid covid.
I'd love to meet my twin sister at her house to walk her dogs with her today or tomorrow but we'll see. She fills up her schedule quickly some weekends.

I have plans to get a work out in later this morning, then meet a friend later this afternoon for drinks and to hear about her house hunting adventures. I also have a couple returns to make, and some other random chores to get done. For now I’m enjoying a quiet cup of coffee while H sleeps in.
I was fighting with a mattress all week. I bought a full sized trifold portable mattress and shouldn’t have opened it because I had already figured it would be too large and I should return it and get two twins. I opened it, it was too large and because it was vacuum sealed and then tightly wrapped in plastic before it went into the small box there was no way I could get it back in. I knew this, just like I knew I shouldn’t have opened the box, but I decided I was going to be McGyver. I watched a video on how to vacuum pack with your wet dry vac, I used a roll of packing tape trying to get the flimsy plastic back around the mattress and I kept vacuuming out the air only to have it puff up again and then between tries attempted to find any holes in the plastic. I then bought a mattress bag and tried again without success. Then I chatted with Amazon who said I needed to return in a box and I should go to UPS and buy a bigger one and they’d reimburse me. So that’s what I did, I bought the largest one they had and brought it home, tried vacuuming and stuffing and it broke the box. Finally I spent a 1/2 hour on another chat with Amazon and they said that the UPS store will accept my return without a box on Monday. So we’ll see.
My next project is to clean a large heavy area rug that I dragged outside. I’m now having my doubts.
Going to a museum this morning. There was supposed to be a talk about the musical Shuffle Along today I was looking forward to but that was canceled and possibly not being rescheduled. But we already have passes for today so we will at least see the new fiber arts exhibit that opened.
Then for lunch we want to try out a new bakery that’s near there.
A local place does a takeout lobster and seafood boil for Valentine’s Day. They’ve been offering it each year since the beginning of COVID and it’s really good! I hate eating things like that inside a restaurant and it’s too cold to be outside so perfect for me!

I’m getting my hair done now. We may check out a new bar/restaurant place for lunch. I’m also thinking of driving about 30 min to my favorite coffee shop in a nearby town. They bring their truck to the farmers markets every Sat in the summer and I really miss getting an iced latte from Them. They have the best coffee drinks.
Flying in Australia was wild. We checked in at the Sydney airport and they never verified our identity. They also don’t do varied group boarding on Virgin (no clue on other airlines). It was like people needing assistance, gold platinum business people, everyone else. They also board through both doors.
I have a friend who had his dad take a domestic flight in his (friends) name to maintain frequent flyer status!
Also there's no liquid restriction on board. You want to bring a gallon jug of water and all your full sized toiletries? Go right ahead.
Australia is a magical place that is what the USA was 20-30 years ago.
Going to work out soon. DS has a basketball game at 2pm. We were invited to a party tonight for a younger guy friend whose girlfriend is having twins soon. Kind of a "bring a box of diapers, hang out and drink" type of thing, so we may go to that for a couple hours if we can offload DS at his parent's house. Pretty uneventful weekend. I'm starting to feel the usual winter boredom and the itch to get out of town.
We were invited to a Superbowl party tomorrow at our friend's basement bar but its 25 minutes away and I really prefer to just make our own snacks here and be comfy on the couch. Plus its a school night. God I sound boring lol.
It’s supposed to snow today and started last night, so I decided to go ahead and knock out the errands I needed to run last night. I’m glad I don’t need to go run around with the crowds on Super Bowl weekend now.
DS1 has a play date in about an hour and I promised him breakfast this morning, so I should probably get up and get that started. Aside from taking him over to his friend’s house, I may not go anywhere today. Debating signing up for yoga though. That could be nice.
The kids told me last night that this morning we'll be making a trip to the bookstore since they're both out of reading material, then we'll do some Pokemon Go hunting at the park, then we'll go to a Korean hot dog/donut place Kid 1 and I discovered last weekend, and after that I'll be taking DS2 home so Kid 1 can go to their archery lesson across town.
Well okay then, I guess that's going to be most of my day.
DS2 also has a D&D game late this afternoon that will take him through dinner, and Kid 1 and I are going to my sister's house to babysit my nephews so she and her boyfriend can see a play for her birthday.

It's warm today, in the 50s so I'm about to get in a nice long while DD is at dance. After I pick her up, I'm going to work on the second coat of paint in the kitchen. I pulled a muscle in my neck and back, so I'm really hoping I can manage painting.
We went to the lemur center this morning and I'm just in love with them all.
Poor DD had a bit of a breakdown in the gift shop when we offered to get her a stuffed animal for her birthday next month. She got very upset when she realized that she wouldn't get it until get birthday and decided she didn't want it. But there were tears involved.

We are 3/4 of the way through DS's required driving hours and I'm so over it. I love doing errands alone and am ready to go back to that. He and I just went grocery shopping at a farther away store so he could get in 20 minutes each way of driving.
I worked from home yesterday and struggled to actually work whoops, so now I have to finish this weekend.
I also took DD to her annual Dr appointment yesterday and am so happy our doc is so supportive of birth control options. DD is 13 and we are doing some testing to rule out serious period/uterine problems, and then assuming all is well she is getting an IUD or implanon. I am so happy for her to not have to deal with periods like I did! Mirena 4 lyfe.

We have a weekend free of things for the first time since about August. It is so nice.
I had friends over last night and it was so nice. We had good conversation, good food, good drinks and watched a good movie.
Both of their kids have dealt with some serious things and while the kids made some dumb choices along the way, they also made some really good choices to get themselves out and not fall in deeper.
I saw Lisa Frankenstein last week (it was Regal’s mystery Monday movie) and I loved it. I think this might be a movie you will love or hate. It’s really a hard movie to describe but I think most of the people in the theatre really enjoyed it.
We’re dog sitting over the weekend for a friend that had to travel for a funeral.
He’s a cutie but also so very energetic. And so fucking barky. A high-pitched bark that is literally deafening.
We’re doing 2x the walks prescribed and time-outs in the crate with treats when he needs to settle, etc., but omg. I can’t wait for this creature to be gone 🥲 we will not be doing this again.
I'm at my mom's trying to concentrate on two papers I need to finish this weekend. There are fewer distractions here and it was also an excuse to go by Whole Foods pastry case and pick up breakfast croissants. I really like their leek and cheese one and I only indulge when I bring her food, lol.
Random unpopular opinion: remote start is stupid. Why does your car need to be running and wasting gas before you are in it? Even when it’s freezing out, the vast majority of people really can just deal with being cold for a few minutes.
