This week I learned that the real proof of ML rich isn't the trips people take, it's the amount spent on sports! And I say that with zero judgment, my jaw is just still on the floor at how expensive things are.
I really dislike the special teams mentality that has developed in the last decade. I’ve had people ask me about E’s sports and I’m very vocal that for now, nothing takes up our weekends or costs a ton of money. Because she’s 10! She doesn’t need travel anything.
I am so exhausted. DD2 had her play this weekend and I’ve worked every day. So ive been on my feet 7 hours+ tending to customers (who were very needy this weekend, for some reason) and gone straight to the school for the show, eating in my car on the way. Then after entertaining family (people have come to see her each show) I’ve gone straight out for whatever event the cast had scheduled - an ice cream shop, the cast party etc. The matinee is the last show and mercifully I’m off today but I’m just completely shot.
We flew home last night and the turbulence was so so bad approaching Boston that I 1000% thought we were all going to die in a plane crash. I am not a nervous flyer at all, but i have never experienced anything like it. I’m pretty sure my anxious DD is traumatized for life and we’ll have to drug her for our next flights in July. People were screaming and the flight crew was radio silent, which freaked everyone out. Good thing I already have DD’s first therapy appt scheduled!
how scary! sorry you all had to experience that, but I’m glad you are okay. I hope your daughter is able to fly again without any stress/anxiety.
Never have I been happier that David picked robotics and band when I read threads like that, which are both extremely inexpensive. I forget how expensive sports are until I read threads like that.
I had a conversation with someone at work about it and we decided if we just took the sports money and put it into a high yield savings for kids, they'd be rich when they're adults lol.
I was shocked at my own numbers. And my kid has asked to try at least 3 other sports. 😭
The numbers in that thread made me feel more comfortable with the amount I will be paying for DS to do martial arts.

We had this once coming into Chicago probably weather related since it was in between storms. We got caught in a downdraft and dropped a lot probably 50 or more feet and the plane was dipping and rocking side to side as they were trying to right it after the downdraft. Very scary!

Day 3 of Peloton - I was able to undo my shoes while in the saddle and dived off the bike like I was avoiding a live bomb in a mission impossible movie.

I think it all depends on the program. We have access to inexpensive rec sports. My kid was thinking about hs band and decided to do sports in my head and I am secretly celebrating because I was shocked at how expensive the band program is.

We have friends who are regularly out until after 9 on weeknights and from 7 am - 11 pm on weekends for kids sports. Part of the family's reasoning for this level of competition was so their kid could make the MS/HS athletic teams. It's so keeping up with the Joneses and I hope that there's also room on MS/HS teams for kids who haven't competed previously on the travel team level.

David goes to private school so the cost is rolled into tuition with enrollment every year so the cost of everything is clearly laid out and band is definitely wayyyy cheaper than sports. But I do agree that it depends on the program and I was speaking to the posts in the mentioned thread. If David wanted to do sports, I definitely would have happily supported him.

I bought a crop top from Old Navy and wore it last night and it’s my new favorite thing ever! I have fully subscribed to the “Want a bikini body? Put your body in a bikini” mentality.

A nurse just asked the patient in the infusion bay next to me how they were feeling and the patient responded “With my fingers” and it cracked me up way more then it should. I ugly cackled.
Kids' soccer was cancelled due to bad weather so I'm at loose ends. I curled my stick-straight hair for fun and realized that I gave myself DD's (natural) hair. No wonder I thought I was so gorgeous!
Apparently the municipality did some clean-out + the high levels of pollen have needed to be balanced in the water system so the water tastes so weird. I am making lots of seltzer with the soda stream this week to kill the taste. The water tastes fine when it's cold/fizzy enough but every once in a while I let it sit too long and the earthy vibe is nasty.

It’s getting better! 🤣
The shoes were tricky for me at first too. I tell people when you’re clipping out to pretend you’re putting out a cigarette butt with the ball of your toe and rotate your heel outward.
We saw Chelsea Handler last night and it was really fun. Her opener was great, too. The entire show was less than 2 hours long, too, so we were home by 9:30. That's one nice thing about seeing a performer in her late 40s - she wants to get to bed at a reasonable hour, too.
I am ushering Mamma Mia today and the place is nearly sold out so I probably will have to stand during the performance to watch. I hate standing in one place for a long time so hopefully the show will be worth it!
Speaking of Greece (sort of haha), my parents are trying to get there right now but have had multiple flight cancellations and delays. Apparently their luggage is in Newark and they are currently in Frankfort Germany. I hope it gets to them ok! They are gone for almost 3 weeks so carry on only would have been hard, but this is a good reminder about why I hate parting with my luggage.

IFL my new crop top and crop tank/bra thing. I've been sleeping in crop camis for a few years I run warm at night. It's so liberating not having excess fabric.

I tried a bunch from Old Navy and none fit me right. Then I found this one from Target, and I love it. It's not quite cropped, but it's short and not too tight and was just the fit I was looking for, so I bought it in every color. I wish I could find a tank top though. My issue is that I don't want skin tight, but any that aren't TOO tight seem to be huge in the arm holes and then show my bra under my arm, which is a no-go for me. I did keep one from Old Navy, but it's tighter than I wish it was. www.target.com/p/women-39-s-shrunken-short-sleeve-t-shirt-universal-thread-8482-blue-striped-l/-/A-89532726?preselect=89532726
Add me to the appalled at those who have not even HEARD Prince songs. How is that possible???
I let ds have 4 friends sleep over last night because DD and dh are on a y-princess camp out. I don't enjoy letting kids sleep over and rarely do it, but they ask all the time so I do like to sometimes say yes because I know it's a me issue. But they were loud from like 1:30 AM-3 AM, and now they are still sleeping, 3 of them in the basement and 2 of them in the living room, and I am awake and just want to go about my day but feel bad if I wake them. I did go down and let the dogs out and feed them and make myself coffee and grab something to eat. But I only have like another 45 min. in me before I want to walk the dogs and then get a workout in, and that will involve turning lights on and making a lot more noise.
Appalled seems a bit strong. Maybe I'd recognize it if I heard it. I don't discount his musical greatness, but it was not my personal preference to listen to.
I was sick thursday and friday but woke up saturday feeling great. One of my high school besties turned 50 yesterday, and we had a small gathering for her, which I went to because I felt fine. Now, today, my head cold is back.
I thought Alcohol cured everything. I was lied to!

I swear it “killed the germs” when I was younger!!

RIGHT!
Maybe as we age, we need more to kill those germs.
Re Prince: when we started discussing him, did we know that today is the anniversary of his death? 😮
Just realized that from my FB memories.
I also have a FB memory from 8 years ago from his death.
It was about how when I was a kid this pizza place in town used to do free video games and free juke box plays on Tuesdays, and I'd subject the other patrons to Raspberry Beret and When Doves Cry over and over and over.

A friend didn't come to my wedding because her kids' sports conflicted. And that is honestly totally fine and her family's choice to have that priority! But since I think it's pretty clear that my perception of youth sports is not on the level of many people in the US, I cannot imagine feeling like I, the grown up, can't go on an international trip with my husband because the first grader has a game.

Honestly it’s like the video that was circulating where a mom was complaining because her preshus on travel ball didn’t get to play. And that’s because they just want your money. Teams only have so many spots in school and talent can’t be bought. I think some people think travel teams will make their kid better, but there’s only so much skill before capability.
Anyway it’s a big thing for me and I also see the financial aspect with friends who can’t really afford it.

That is just ridiculous. My kid plays 2 sports on multiple teams but I would never put that before something like a good friend’s wedding.

We’ve been haggling back and forth all week about a townhouse and I just got word that they accepted our final offer. I’m so happy and relieved! It will close before I’ll have to move out of this house, so I don’t have to worry about where to live in between. Fingers crossed the inspection goes well.
