I voted yes. But I'm assuming a normal "office" bathroom. If it was kept relatively clean by the people that use it I wouldn't have a problem splitting this responsibility with my office-mates, i.e. each person cleans it once a month.
It depends on how many people share it and who else was helping to keep it clean. I would be more likely to help out if there were only a few people using it and they all pitched in to keep it clean.
I had to clean bathrooms when I worked at the grocery store and I just did a mop of the floor and wipe of the sink. Even that was nasty.
I work for a private non-profit and I clean the bathroom because we don't have cleaning staff :-)
We do a quick wipe down every morning and then it gets a more thorough cleaning on Saturdays. I share this responsibility with one other lady. Everyone does a good job of picking up after themselves and keeping it tidy though.
We have done just that - cut paid cleaning staff. Set up a schedule for cleaning and take turns. No biggie. I vacuum my own office and empty the waste baskets in 2 offices and the bathroom. We are all doing our part to stretch what we have so that the money is going to help those that need assistance, rather than making our own lives cushy or padding the overhead expenses.
I said yes, but it is totally reasonable to say no. Especially if clients were using the restroom. If it were just a smallish group of colleagues and everyone was helping I would consider it.
We cut our cleaning staff years ago. Our business is back in full swing but we've realized that cleaning staff really isn't needed. I share a bathroom with five other women, so it's not a big deal.
I realize that's "menial" work to a few people in this thread, but I also still answer phones when everyone else is out to lunch, that's just part of being a manager and doing what needs to be done here.
at the job I have I would. It is a small office and many days I am the only one here...thus I am the main user of the bathroom. It is not for public use at all.
For people who think they are too good to clean the bathroom and say they are not paid to do it...um..if you are doing it on work time. YES, you ARE being paid to do it! Duh. And most likely at a much higher rate of pay than a cleaning person would make.
I get really annoyed when I hear people say they wont do something because it is beneath them.
I don't mind answering phones but I am not cleaning bathrooms. I don't even clean my bathrooms at home. I answered the poll that I would chip in $ to pay for someone else to clean.
Honestly, if everyone else was up for sharing cleaning duties and I didn't think they could afford to chip in for a cleaner, I would suck it up and be a good citizen. But I wouldn't like it.
Yes, if I felt passionate about the non-profit and wanted to see it succeed. I am not one to typically take on duties like this, but I can see myself doing it if I were working for an important cause.
Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere for a job. If I didn't feel passionate about the work, I probably wouldn't work for a non-profit at all since the pay is generally crap.
I was going to say no based on the subject line, but I'd say yes based on the fact it is a small non-profit. If I ever found myself working at a small NP I'm guessing it would be because I wanted to support a certain organization/cause and that's just part of the deal. If more people can be helped by the organization because there is less money being spent on cleaning, that's great.
I work for a large non-profit and my answer would be "hell no". We have plenty of money to pay someone to do it and a large number of people are using it daily.
In general this idea does gross me out. I guess if I could afford it I'd chip in for weekly maid service, but I'm guessing if I work for a small NP I don't make a lot of money either so I may not be able to afford it.

Are they paying me the same high hourly rate that they pay me for everything else? If so, I suppose I'd do it. Better use of my time than a lot of the meetings they ask me to attend. However, it would probably be cheaper for them to hire the cleaning staff again. If I am salaried and this is on top of my other work, no effing way. I might make an exception if I worked at a start up with few enough people that the bathrooms didn't need to get cleaned very often.
