I feel the need to post this here too. I'm bitter and likely irrational now. Maybe I'm to fault but end result is we are likely stopping work on our house to maintain sanity.
Let it go. If anything, the only thing you should be reimbursed for is the late fee, which may or may not be legit, so you would have to chase that down first. I'm sure the permit guy already told everyone about what appeared to him as a raging bitch customer (H used to work in retail and everyone in the store knew when there were unsatisfied customers for when/if they came back in cases like this), so chances are another visit won't help.
Chalk it up as lessons learned - 1) always look into permits yourself (personal responsibility) And 2) you catch more flies with honey....
every single rep in there had "raging" customers. That is what filled my four hours, listening to all the other crazy stories.
This is why we are going to stop work for awhile. I don't have confidence we could get permits semi easily.
I honestly think you are way over-reacting. The land of the barnyard is also the land of the permit, so I'm totally used to it. There are a lot of times we didn't realize we needed a permit, someone forgot or we thought someone else took care of it. I just haul myself to the courthouse, explain the situation nicely and they hand me my permit. Once in awhile it ends up with an "extra processing" fee because someone forgot. It sucks, but whatever in the grand scheme it doesn't really matter that much as long as it's taken care of. It's not like the permit police are going to come after you anymore. I've also learned that unless a contractor tells me they're doing the permits, I assume it is on us. There are a lot of things here that the actual owners need to do the permitting for as well. It's just part of life in construction and in our case dealing with the EPA as well. Sh*t happens. If this is all that stresses you out, I'd call it a good project. Also don't let one a$$hate in CS dissuade from the permit enough to stop work. Everyone has a bad day. After tommorrow the guy probably won't remember your name. I've had to get ragey at the courthouse a few times myself so I understand, but unless you were a total b*tch it's all in a days work for them. As for the alte fees, I'd call back after the holiday, apologize, explain the situation, say "Hey, I read, there's no such thing as a late fee, please remove it." Like a pp, more flies with honey.
